Care A Gram OCTOBER 2016 Understanding Our Loved Ones’ Needs Our loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or a related neurocognitive disorder cannot always tell us what they are feeling. A website for caregivers, www.thecaregiversvoice.com, reminds us of this by sharing the following poem, entitled “Maybe”. “Maybe” encourages us to remember that our loved ones’ needs for the basics of food and drink, toileting, pain relief, exercise, and feelings of safety and security, may be expressed in other ways. As caregivers, we must often be the “detective”, looking for the reason behind a behavior, and trying to “see” what our loved one sees. Norman McNamara is credited with providing this poem to The Caregiver’s Voice. According to Alzheimers.net, “Norrms, as his friends call him, was diagnosed with early onset dementia at age 50. In the five years since his diagnosis, he has done more to educate the world about the disease than most of us can imagine doing in a lifetime.” Maybe When I wander don’t tell me to come and sit down. Wander with me. It may be because I am hungry, thirsty, need the toilet. Or maybe I just need to stretch my legs. When I call for my mother (even though I’m ninety!) don’t tell me she has died. Reassure me, cuddle me, ask me about her. It may be that I am looking for the security that my mother once gave me. When I shout out please don’t ask me to be quiet…or walk by. I am trying to tell you something, but have difficulty in telling you what. Be patient. Try to find out. I may be in pain. When I become agitated or appear angry, please don’t reach for the drugs first. I am trying to tell you something. It may be too hot, too bright, too noisy. Or maybe it’s because I miss my loved ones. Try to find out first. ________________________ www.alzheimers.net A Special Monthly Newsletter for Caregivers Inside this issue: 1 Understanding Our Loved Ones’ Needs Continued 2 WOW BOARD 3 Support Group Schedule 4 Family Nurse Consultants 5 October Special Events 6 Creative Corner 7 At Alzheimer's Community Care Character Counts! Understanding Our Loved Ones’ Needs

Our loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or a related neurocognitive disorder cannot always

tell us what they are feeling. A website for caregivers, www.thecaregiversvoice.com, reminds us

of this by sharing the following poem, entitled “Maybe”.

“Maybe” encourages us to remember that our loved ones’ needs for the basics of food and

drink, toileting, pain relief, exercise, and feelings of safety and security, may be expressed in

other ways. As caregivers, we must often be the “detective”, looking for the reason behind a

behavior, and trying to “see” what our loved one sees.

Norman McNamara is credited with providing this poem to The Caregiver’s Voice. According

to Alzheimers.net, “Norrms, as his friends call him, was diagnosed with early onset dementia at age

50. In the five years since his diagnosis, he has done more to educate the world about the disease

than most of us can imagine doing in a lifetime.”

Maybe

When I wander don’t tell me to come and sit down.

Understanding Our Loved Ones’ Needs Continued

When I don’t eat my dinner or drink my tea it may be because I’ve forgotten how to.

Show me what to do, remind me.

It may be that I just need to hold my knife and fork

I may know what to do then.

When I push you away while you’re trying to help me wash or get dressed,

maybe it’s because I have forgotten what you have said.

Keep telling me what you are doing over and over and over.

Maybe others will think you’re the one that needs the help!

With all my thoughts and maybes, perhaps it will be you

who reaches my thoughts, understands my fears,

and will make me feel safe.

Maybe it will be you who I need to thank.

If only I knew how.

WOW BOARD

Each day center and Family Nurse Consultant office will have a “WOW BOARD” consisting of each staff

member’s name, position title, and picture. This will help the caregiver and patient become more familiarized with

the staff who work behind the scenes (Case Manager, Family Nurse Consultant, ID Locator Manager) as well as

current staff in the center. We also will be posting about “WOW MOMENTS” – this can include anything from a

caregiver expressing gratitude, to an employee doing something great for another employee, and even a supervisor

recognizing a staff member!

(Activities to do with loved ones at home)

Yarn Ghosts

Supplies:

White or cream yarn

Scissors

Card stock cut into a 4x4 or 5x4

Black permanent marker

Directions: 1. Wrap yarn around the card stock 20 times. Make sure it's snug, but not

too tight that the card starts to bend.

2. Cut a 12" piece of yarn and slip it under the wrapped yard.

3. Tie a double knot.

4. Carefully remove wrapped yarn from the card.

5. Cut a 6" piece of yarn and tie a double knot around the top 1/4 of the tas-

sel. This makes the 'head' of the ghost.

6. Using the tail of this piece, wrapped it around a few times creating the

'neck'.

7. Tie it in a double knot and trim any loose ends.

8. Cut through all the loops.

9. On the opposite of your 'neck' knot, draw on two eyes using a permanent

marker.
