Discussion

1 Explain to participants that standard precautions will be followed during this training

2 Hand out the Student Training Kits for CPR and supplies as applicable and identify the contents

3 Ask participants to inform you privately if they have any medical condition or disability that might affect course participation

4 Tell participants that they should request a separate training manikin if they have a condition that would increase the risk of disease transmission

5 Tell participants that when giving first aid care or CPR personal protective equipment items such as disposable gloves and CPR breathing barriers that are soiled with blood or body fluids are considered contaminated and a biohazard and must be disposed of properly Instructions for cleaning up blood or other body fluids can be found on redcrossorg

Tilts head back so that jaw line is at an angle less than 80deg or greater than 100deg to the floor

CPR SKILL ASSESSMENTbull Setup Imagine that you are in an emergency situation involving an adult victim who needs CPR Demonstrate how two

responders who know CPR can work together to provide effective compressions and rescue breaths EMS has been activated and CPR by one responder has been in progress when a second responder who is trained arrives and offers his or her assistance

bull Responder 1 will give chest compressions Responder 2bull will give rescue breaths The responders should bebull positioned on opposite sides of the manikin Respondersbull will perform the same technique (depth speed handbull position etc) and compressionbreath ratios as withbull single-rescuer CPR (Adult 152)bull Candidatesrsquo Action Responders 1 and 2 get in position to begin CPRbull Responder 2 check for signs of circulationbull Candidatesrsquo Action Responder 2 checks for signs of circulation for 10 seconds while Responder 1 is ready to begin chest

compressions if neededbull Responder 1 The victim shows no signs of circulationbull Candidatesrsquo Action Responder 2 says ldquoNo signs of circulation begin CPRrdquobull Responder 1 begins CPR by giving a cycle of chestbull compressions (15 for adult) then pauses whilebull Responder 2 gives the rescue breath(s) (2 for adultbull Continue for several more cycles to improvebull coordination of chest compressions and rescue breaths
