Carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in the
atmosphere: A look at the effects on chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease
• More than 12 million people in the United States alone have been diagnosed with COPD, and it is estimated that another 12 million are infected but have not been diagnosed.
• In 2005, an estimated 126, 005 people in the U.S. died from COPD.
• COPD is the fourth most leading cause of death, following only heart disease, stroke and cancer. It causes more deaths than influenza, pneumonia, diabetes or Alzheimer’s Disease.
