Through the engineering of its fulfilment centres, Amazon has built the world’s most nimble infrastructure for the transfer of things, a logistics platform that dramatically amplifies any one person’s ability to move the matter to anyone else. As Amazon expands that capacity to

include its own trucks and someday flying drones, the physical reach it can offer other businesses extends even further. Much in the way cloud services and the data centres that house them have become the foundation of doing business online, Amazon’s fulfilment centres have the potential to become the networked hubs of the consumer economy, the biggest of big boxes that free up businesses to focus on making things rather than moving them. Matthias DillmannMatthias Dillmann is leading the Production Strategy and

Logistic Planning group at the Fraunhofer Insttitute for

Manufacturing Engineering and Automation, where he lectures

and trains companies on logistical planning methods. Matthias

is a frequent speaker and seminar leader on production

logistics and factory planning. He has been working as

a Research Fellow at Fraunhofer since 2011. He complet-

ed previous assignments in Taiwan, the USA and Germany.

Matthias Dillmann graduated in Mechanical Engineering from

the University of Stuttgart.

trAINING Style AND OBjectIVeS This course is an interactive 2-day masterclass bringing together logistics professionals from all around Europe. By presenting inspirational examples, case studies and lessons learned from actual projects, the training allows participants to familiarise themselves with all key aspects of the transformation towards Smart Logistics. In addition, delegates will benefit from the opportunity to network with other senior professionals within the group. The training features private guided tours to the Amazon Fulfilment Center and Arena 2036 to learn from the best practices of the most innovative companies in the industry.

Patrick KüblerPatrick Kübler advises companies and supports research

projects in the field of production and logistics with the

Fraunhofer Institute. He is specialised in the optimisation

of order picking systems, intralogistics and warehousing.

Amongst others, he has helped to design and implement ware-

house 4.0 with market leaders in the automotive, technology,

oil and cosmetics manufacturing sectors. A graduate in Indus-

trial Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt,

he is currently working on his PhD on optimal order picking

methods for dynamic market environments.

Arena 2036 is an acronym for “Active Research Environment for the Next Gener-ation of Automobiles”. On the Vaihingen campus of Stuttgart University, science and industry work together to revolutionise automotive manufacturing as part of

a research partnership. Line-based production as we know it will be replaced by versatile production and digital logis-tics. This will be made possible by highly modular production concepts, supported by human/robot partnerships. This development has become necessary due to the increasing volatility of markets and customers’ increasing preferences for customization.
