So what happens with biomass when heatedupp to 300*C in the Reactor?

o The Volatiles (Hemi-cellulose) are gasifiedinto a Torrefaction gas which is re-used in the process for drying and to heat up the reactor.

o The physical properties of biomass fibreschange by the heat treatment and becomebrittle, black and hydrophobic.

o The Carbon Content (%) of the biomassincreases with the torrefaction degree, and also the energy content!

Why is biocoal an attractive solution for coalfired plants that wish to reduce CO2 impact?

1. Biocoal can be co-fired with coal in most Power Plants.2. Biocoal handles, stores, is grinded and burns like coal. Few or

no adaptations are needed.3. At 54% Carbon Content Biocoal has aprox a heating value 21

GJ/ton and becomes very similar to fossil coal - see followingchart - plus contains still enough lignin to be pelletized (6 or 8 mm pellets). Torrefied pellets are also called ”black pellets”

4. Example from Poyry study (Helsingfors Energy): Every ton ofRussian Coal replaced with biocoal will reduce Green House Gases with 2,4 Ton equivalent of CO2.

5. Biocoal is an convenient and easy solution for coal fired plant to reduce their CO2 impact. Price per ton will be in line withstandare wood pellets price in €uros/ MWh.

The Breakthrough

o Holmsund Biocarbon Plant AB received a grant from ”Klimatklivet” from The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency

o Bioendev will supply Torrefaction technology

o The plant will be a ”Zebra” - Producing both black and white pellets

o Fully Commercial with a capacity of 60 000 ton black pellets or 80 000 ton white pellets or a mix.
