An “Eleanor Cross” was erected in the village tocommemorate the event, probably on the Pitchingsbut no trace remains.
THE PITCHINGS, TOWN HALL &BEDFORD STREET
The Pitchings at the centre of Woburn was once thesite for markets and fairs. On the Pitchings stands theTown Hall, built in 1830 by Sir Edward Blore, architect to William IV and Queen Victoria, he alsodesigned the frontage to Buckingham Palace.
The Town Hall replaced the old Market Hall, builtin 1737. There has probably been a hall on the sitefor centuries, providing Woburn with a generalmeeting place.
Today the Town Hall is an antique centre and Woburnhas its new village hall on Crawley Road.
THE PARISH CHURCH
In 1865 the 8th Duke ofBedford commissionedarchitect Henry Clutton tobuild a new church in ParkStreet, as the old churchon Bedford Street was toosmall for the thenpopulation.
‘New’ St. Mary’s whichwas built and completedin 1868.
WOBURNHamlet, village, town and back to village
HISTORY
Woburn is recorded as a Saxon hamlet in 969 and inthe Domesday Book of 1086. The name derives fromthe Saxon word ‘wo’ meaning crooked and ‘burn’, asmall stream.
In 1145 the Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbeyin Yorkshire founded an abbey at Woburn. The hamletsoon became a village and then a town with amarket three days a week, held on the Pitchings, the cobbled area that is still the hub of the village.Woburn was also on a drovers’ route, with drovers’ponds at both sides of the village. On market daysthe drovers would use Caswell Lane to avoid the busycentre – an early bypass!
Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538,Henry VIII bequeathed Woburn Abbey and its estatesto John Russell of Chenies who became the first Earlof Bedford. In 1694 during the reign of William andMary the family were given the title of Dukes.A fire in 1724 destroyed most of the town and it wasrebuilt in the Georgian style we see today.
During the coaching era of the early 19th centuryWoburn became an important staging post on acountrywide network, including London, Cambridge,Oxford, Nottingham and Leeds and had the first24-hour post office outside London. There were 27 inns in the town and the old coachingarches can still be seen between the pubs and houseson Bedford Street and Leighton Street. In the 1851census the population of Woburn was 2100. During the20th century it fell to 700 and is now around 1000.
On the night of Sunday, 10th December 1290, thebody of Queen Eleanor, consort to King Edward I,rested in “Woburne” as her funeral procession madeits way from Harby in Nottinghamshire toWestminster Abbey.
