Saludos y despedidas

• Learning how to speak Spanish involves more than just learning vocabulary and grammar.

• Gestures (los gestos) go hand in hand with speaking, which makes conversation in Spanish seem much more animated than in English.

• Spanish-speaking people commonly greet one another with a quick, relaxed handshake, which may be followed by a hug (un abrazo) as they pat each other in the back. Often women and young girls greet each other with a light kiss on the check.

• In some Spanish countries, men and women who know each other well also greet one another with a kiss on the cheek.

• These same gestures are often repeated when saying good-bye.• The next time you see people speaking Spanish, watch how

they use their hands, eyes and bodies to communicate.
