Capacity building and experience in research collaboration:Indonesian perspectives.

  • Profile of HEI in Indonesia

    Population: 234,000,000 (July 2007 est.)

Problem: Disparity in quality of higher education institutions in

    Indonesia ( ~ 2800 universities, 155,000 faculty, 4.3 million students)

Very low research productivity: Only 10 % (out of 155,000), mostly conducted in a few

best universities (UI, ITB, UGM, IPB)

  • Country Scientific IndicatorAsiatic Region 1997-2007

  • Publications: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand

  • In Indonesia, the best three universities produce the most publications

    THES 2008 : 315Asia: 80

    THES 2008: 287Asia: 50THES 2008: 316Asia: 63

    Asia: 119

  • Why Indonesia ranks low in research output?

    Major constrains (among others):

Lack of research funds and research infrastructure (recently the government allocates at least 20% of

government spending to the education sector )

Low number of PhD : low research experience, very few research collaboration

Heavy on teaching: not adequate research culture
