Community Calendar of Monthly Meetings is on the Community Page this month. As we naturally search for mean-ing in the September 11, 2001 attacks, answers vary from person to per-son. To me, 9-11 is a symbol of how lucky we are to be Americans in our relative safety compared to the rest of the world. For Veterans, it must be a stark reminder that freedom is not free, hitting close to home and close to the heart. On 9-11, 343 firefighters and 60 police officers died; first responders relate. Patriotism soared to new heights – a surge of enlistments followed, Reservists were called to duty, and the nation stood together fused in a common bond that tragedies often bring about. The hundreds who attend the Freedom Walk Across Canyon Lake Dam on September 11th every year reflect that bonded spirit.
The founder of the Walk in Canyon Lake is Patti Johnson, for-mer president of Canyon Lake Republican Women, and our Can-yon Lake Community Profile this month. She is dedicated to ensur-ing the event is nonpartisan and independent from politics, but community involvement from all persuasions seems to dictate it. You’re invited to “join the community to honor those who have given their lives for our freedom; those who have served, and those first responders who are currently serving” to unite and reflect.
Join Mid-Texas Symphony on September 11th in their tribute to victims of the attack. This season’s “America The Beautiful” se-ries opens on September 11th with the concert entitled, Heroes. “Through music, we can express our unity, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity,” notes Maestro Mairs.
Unity is one objective of the September 13th Community Co-alition event, “Dream Big,” – designed to provide a communica-tion link between nonprofit and service organizations and the community at large. Finding common ground – serving the kids, neighborhood watches, or perhaps drought issues, etc – among the many diverse groups who share a love of this community may not be difficult. Show up, share your thoughts, and learn something.
Stay informed and be aware. Currently, businesses are receiving calls from “the only local magazine in Canyon Lake” and it is not The Canyon Lake Views. Not only is the caller incorrect, they can’t be local either or they would know about us! Always know who you’re talking to (we never ask for credit card numbers), and always read the fine print so you know what you’re agreeing to. Also read the fine print on donation boxes around town – the money does not stay local and most benefits for-profit pockets. Be aware and report suspicious activities.
Communication is the key. It’s through sharing ideas and con-cerns that we will find common ground to stand on and what better place to start than at home and work from the ground up. United We Stand equals strength – at home and nationwide.

As schools have reconvened for elementary, middle/junior high and high school, parents and guardians are reminded of vaccinations needed and physicals required for their families. This leads to the inevitable doctor’s office visit. Furthermore, thoughts of long waits and limited scheduling times ensue on the minds of all parents to assure their children’s participation at school.
A new approach to the doctor’s visit is here. They are called Nurse Practitioners. A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse (RN), who has advanced educational and clinical training in a health care specialty area. They provide information you and your family need to make informed decisions about your health care and lifestyle choices. Nurse Practitioners practice under the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work. They are nationally certified in their specialty area. They are recognized as expert health care pro-viders. A Nurse Practitioner can write prescriptions for medi-cations. The benefit to families in need of health care, such as immunizations, physicals and well checkups, is tremendous due to the ease and personalized care of visit to a nurse prac-titioner’s office.
Nurse Practitioner’s are not limited to just immunizations and physicals. Their scope of practice encompasses diagnosis

PATTI JOHNSON~ Putting politics aside
September 11th is a busy day for Patti Johnson. An invitation to attend the San Antonio Freedom Walk began Patti on her path to introduce Canyon Lake to the idea she found so therapeutic. She modestly takes credit only for the vision to start the 9-11 Freedom Walk Across Canyon Dan and admits to making some calls, but she says “the community does it all. They come together, every-one chips in, and it all works. It belongs to all of us.” She undoubt-ably plays a bigger part, because an event that draws hundreds of people every year doesn’t organize itself, even if the worker bee’s are master volunteers, which many in Canyon Lake are.
The event is “typical” for Canyon Lake in its distinctive indi-viduality, abnormal in attendance numbers, and heartwarming in the deep-seated emotions it brings out, as well as the level of com-passion and love in the hugs and the help that goes around. This is a day when differences are set aside, kindred solidarity rules, and United We Stand all together with our roots entwined.
As a proactive member of Canyon Lake Republican Women, Patti’s greatest concern was that the Freedom Walk would be per-ceived as partisan, causing some with different ideals to feel ex-cluded. In the Post 9-11 spirit that emerged quickly following the attacks, the opposite has materialized. Politics and campaigning are prohibited and replaced with unity, brotherhood, and bonding. No items are sold, everything is donated, and huge part of the community makes it happen.
When Patti’s vision of a local Walk first developed into an-nounced plans in 2006, her co-planner was called out of town leaving it entirely in Patti’s hands. Unable or unwilling to stop a rolling ball, Patti moved on it. The Corp of Engineers gave perms-sion for the site. John Guenzel, whose son she later discovered was in Iraq on active duty, eagerly offered the Rio Raft Resort shuttle for parking. Clint Epley arranged for Commemorative Air Force flyovers, Coast Guard boats, now replaced by private boaters, escorted the Walk on the water at the base of the dam so that water, ground and air space were represented in unity in the tribute. Sheriff Holder provided the Honor Guard. A few more calls brought out members from the VFW posts, firemen and EMS technicians, deputies and County Commissioners. Peaches Kelly opens the moving ceremony with her amazing talent sing-ing the National Anthem and closes with God Bless America. A list of names of 9-11 victims is carried. Participants carry photos of loved ones, on active duty, or lost. Kleenex is provided for the tears that come to most every eye.
It’s events like this that has bonded Patti so securely to the Can-
yon Lake community. She is another former Houstonian who, after 27 years there, feels blessed to call Canyon Lake home – Canyon Lake has many. But the “real” Patti Johnson is not one of many, she is one of a kind – she has built a reputation of dedication and credibility that is respected statewide and beyond.
Patti and her husband, Don, raised their two children in Hous-ton and retired in Canyon Lake to be closer to her parents and her hometown of Austin. Patti is a native Austinite, so she and Don moved back to the Hill Country 11 years ago to be closer to her parents as they aged and discovered the joy of living at Canyon Lake. The beauty of Canyon Lake was no surprise – they knew the area well from attending the University of Texas, where they met. while Patti was pursuing her B.A. in Government.
After Patti and Don graduated from UT, they moved to Cali-fornia where she worked for the political consultant office of then Governor Ronald Reagan. She and Don moved to New York where her children were born, before moving back to Texas to Humble, a former oil boom town and now a blended part of Houston. Throughout the years, she continued working within the political community for a variety of Texas Senate and House members. Pat-ti was an active community volunteer and remained active in poli-tics with the Texas Federation of of Republican Women. She didn’t say so, but the group elected her as one of the “Ten Outstanding Women” for 2006-2007 at its 26th Biennial Convention in 2007.
When Patti and Don retired to Canyon Lake, Don began a new career in real estate, while Patti expanded her volunteerism. She was on the board for the Community Resource and Recreation Center (CRRC) when the Thrift Shop and Food Bank combined resources with the Recreation Center to serve the community bet-ter. She has just been reappointed to her second six-year term on the State Commission on Judicial Conduct. It investigates judges’ adherence to state constitutional law, a position she describes as “fascinating, intense, and demanding.” She is on the Board of the Comal County 100 Club that assists families of police officers killed in the line of duty.
As Patti talks at length about the families of servicemen killed in action that she has met through the Freedom Walk, it becomes clear that her volunteerism in this event reaches deeper than com-munity to the very personal level. It is an area that gives her a great satisfaction but her lifelong direction identifies her passion.
While government and political activities do keep Patti’s life quite busy, there is one day a year when she gladly leaves it at home. Join the community on September 11th and see why.

Most of my readers’ inquiries in-volve the rules and regulations govern-ing the transfer of retirement plan as-sets from one place to another. By far the most frequently asked question is
whether it’s wise to transfer “rollover” assets from a 401(k) or a 403(b) plan into an IRA. The answer of course varies with each situation. But the common wisdom is that once you leave an employer, there is no reason to leave your retirement money in that employer’s plan. Compared to a “self-directed IRA”, group plans are subject to many restrictions and are usually limited in the number of investment options offered.
There are certain rules that you must be aware of when you decide to rollover your 401(k) or other group plan into an IRA:
(a) If you request a check in your own name, you will be sub-ject to a 20% mandatory federal tax withholding.
(b) When you receive the check, you have a maximum of 60 days to deposit that check into your IRA. This is known as the 60-day rollover. You must come up with the 20% withheld from another source since you won’t get it back until you file your tax return the following year.
(c) The way to avoid this problem is to request a “Direct Roll-over” wherein you first open an IRA account at your chosen in-stitution, then you request that your employer send your account balance directly to your IRA, so you never have possession of the funds during the rollover process.
(d) If you expect to have new employment and want to have the option of adding your old 401(k) to your new employer’s plan, you should have a separate rollover IRA in which you only keep the old 401(k) money. If you comingle assets from different sources in the same IRA, you will not be able to move the money to the new employer’s plan.
The next common question relates to moving an IRA from one investment firm to another. The same basic rules apply, ex-cept there is no mandatory 20% withholding if you choose to receive the money from one IRA and deposit it in another within 60 days. This approach can be used if you need a short-term (less than 60 days) loan from your IRA. However, it is far safer to use the direct rollover approach. It is also known as a trustee-to-trustee rollover. Another rule to keep in mind is that you can only do a 60-day rollover once a year, whereas you can do a direct rollover as often as you like. As always, you must discuss your situation with a trusted advisor before you proceed with any major financial decision.

The benefits of refinancing
When most people think of refinanc-ing, they mainly just think about lower-ing their interest rate. There are several benefits of refinancing. Lowering your monthly payment is just the first thing to consider.
Cash flow savings. When refinancing, you will skip at least one payment, and most of the time you can arrange to skip two full payments. Next, the escrow account on most mortgages is your insurance and tax money being held by the lender. Once you close on your new loan, your previous lender will issue a check for the full refund of your escrow account. This is usually thousands of dollars and can be used to pay college tuition, pay off higher bal-ance credit cards, or for a vacation. Most families can really ben-efit from instant cash flow by refinancing!
Reducing the term of your loan. Another attractive strategy is to take advantage of lower rates and reduce the number of years on your loan. You may want to consider going to a lower term note and cut several years off your mortgage without significantly changing your monthly payment.
Eliminating Mortgage Insurance. Mortgage Insurance may be reduced or eliminated due to increased equity standing on the home. This will be determined by a new appraisal when you refi-nance, and can save you significant money either way.
Refinancing without an appraisal. FHA and VA have great pro-grams to refinance without a new appraisal. All Vets need to look into this one!
Cash out loans to pay off debt. Cash out loans are a great way to consolidate your bills into one payment that is tax deductible. You may be able to lower your overall monthly payments by using the equity in your home to pay off credit card debt. Texas restricts this type of loan to 80% of the value of your home to protect the homeowner.
Whether you shorten your term, lower your monthly payment, or consolidate debt, the benefits are many with these historical low rates. Your home may be your greatest financial asset, so sit down with an experienced Loan Officer to see if you will benefit finan-cially by refinancing your home.Karen Newton is a Loan Officer for Network Funding, a Texas based Mortgage Banker offering full service home financing. In this trying time, economically speaking, we have got to pull together and support one another. What do I mean by this? I mean we need to hang onto the idea that we decide our own fate, and by keeping our community strong, both spiritu-ally and financially, we will insure a lifestyle for our children that promises hope and happiness.
As you drive around the lake, take a moment to really look at the businesses that exist out here. You will begin to see a pattern, almost all of the businesses around Canyon Lake are owned by individuals. These individuals have discovered that the freedoms that come from owning your own business far exceed the headaches that may come from working for someone else. They learned that the strength of a good reputation adds a sense of personal pride. Bonding with your community comes naturally and feels good, but we often forget what that means.
What we need to do now, as members of this community, is sup-port our local business men and women – utilizing their expertise and trust in what they offer. Small business owners are the heart and soul of our nation, and living at the lake has created many very enterprising individuals faced with unique challenges who work hard to provide what you need here at home.
When it’s time to add that new driver to your insurance policy, remember to check with your local agent. If you’re planning an ad-dition to your home, remember the local hardware store; they likely have just what you need. When you decide to go out for dinner, remember the great restaurants we have here at home.
Everything we need is convenient and at our disposal, and by spending money locally, it will stay here. These same individuals shop at the local grocery stores, and they buy the cookies from the Girl Scouts. They are your neighbors and they have chosen to set up shop at Canyon Lake to raise their families alongside yours.
Just let us remember that we all need one another to make it work...
Insuring a lifestyle of hope

Most pet owners are aware that pet overpopulation is a huge problem in the United States. In 2008, an estimated 3.7 million animals were euthanized in shelters, and spaying (surgical removal of ovaries and the uterus) and neuter-ing (surgical removal of testicles) are vital to population control with cats and dogs. However, there are numerous oth-
er benefits to having these surgeries performed, ideally before your pet reaches six months of age.
Other health benefits of spaying:1. Significantly reduced risk of mammary cancer. Spaying a fe-
male dog before her first cycle heat cycle puts her risk of mammary cancer at close to 0. After her first heat cycle, the incidence is 7%. After her second heat cycle, the incidence is 25%. Early spaying of female cats is similarly beneficial, and is especially important because 90% of mammary tumors in cats are malignant.
2. Reduced risk of infection. Female dogs and cats that are not spayed are at risk of developing pyometra, a potentially life-threat-ening condition where the uterus becomes filled with pus and toxins.
Other health benefits of neutering:1. Reduced risk of cancer. Intact (unneutered) male dogs are at
greater risk of testicular cancer and perianal adenomas. For dogs that are cryptorchid (where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum during development), the risk of testicular cancer is even higher.
2. Reduced risk of prostate problems in intact male dogs.3. Reduced risk of roaming. Intact male dogs and cats are more
likely to go out in search of females, placing them at higher risk of getting lost or hit by cars.
4. Reduced risk of aggression. Neutered males are less likely to fight with other males.
5. Reduced urine marking. Neutering reduces the risk of urine spraying by 90% in male cats, and reduces risk of urine marking by 50% in male dogs.
Please don’t hesitate to talk with your veterinarian if you have any additional questions about these surgeries.
Spaying and neutering: Not just for population control

Well this month is the traditional Back to School month. Not only are we saying, “When the kids are back in school…”, there are sentiments of “I am going to start back to walking every morning” or “I am going back to the gym to workout.” Or maybe
you’re saying, “I’m getting back to a routine that for the next nine months (hopefully) I will feel organized, and full of en-ergy. I’m going to get back to having my total quiet time... ahhh – a massage!”
When was your last massage? Back to School specials are for parents, teachers and other school personnel!
Don’t forget the kids need a back to plan as well. School days are long for most of the kids these days. After a few months of late nights, a breakfast that is almost at lunchtime, lots of television and not enough of real physical activity, the first couple of weeks of school can be a total shock to the sys-tem. It has long been proven that kids do so much better aca-demically after getting that full night’s rest – vitally important for them – as well as a good breakfast to get a jump start on the day. Children benefit from a massage as well. They have the same systems and needs as adults – just on a smaller scale.
According to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, a parent must be in the treatment room with the child and therapist, if the child is under the age of 16. A signed par-ent consent form is required for 16 to 18 year olds. If you think your child is in need of a massage, please feel free to ask about special 30 minute sessions, or ask what you, as the parent, can do yourself to massage your child.
I have a back to plan also. I like to look at it as some chang-es that will develop into a good habit, and in January it will not be needed on the list of resolutions!
So whatever your ‘back to….’ thoughts are that are swirling around, keep in mind to include a regular massage schedule. It will help get you in the right frame of mind to get back ‘n shape in no time.

Two former fluoride advocates, Dr. Hardy Limeback, Head of Preventive Dentistry, Uni-
versity of Toronto, and Kathleen Thiessen, toxicologist, served as panel members for a study released in 2006, Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Scientific Review of EPA’s Standards. Their mandate: to review maximum fluoride contamination levels in drinking water. They now believe artificial water fluoridation is a reckless policy.
This review finally galvanized the American Dental Association to warn against overexposing infants to fluoride, suggesting no child under age one should drink formula mixed with fluoridated water.
The original goal of artificial fluoridation was to deliver one mil-ligram of fluoride daily into the body of each child. A “dosage” of 1 ppm was set, assuming children would drink one liter of water a day and have no other sources of fluoride exposure. *
Yet, fluoride exposure has become unavoidable in America. Most of what we consume is prepared with fluoridated water or sprayed with fluoride-based chemicals. Fluoride residues for cheese can be 5 ppm; flour, 125 ppm; dried tea, a whopping 897 ppm. Furthermore, lax standards allow the use of toxic post-harvest fumigants like syn-thetic, fluoride-based cryolite while still allowing an “organic” la-bel. Cipro, Prevacid, and Prozac are just a few pharmaceuticals that use fluoride to carry drugs into otherwise impenetrable body tissues.
Fluoride sets off massive oxidation reactions in the human body, so if you are trying to control chronic inflammatory diseases – heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis – fluoride intake is counterproduc-tive. Diabetics should be concerned about the cellular energy dis-ruption and kidney damage fluoride can cause. Fluoride displaces iodine in the thyroid, aggravating thyroid dysfunction and hormonal imbalances. If you value supple skin, fracture-resistant bones, or in-tact tendons, know that fluoride disrupts collagen building. Cipro and other fluoroquinolones are known to burst tendons.
These may be unintended consequences, nonetheless we ingest far more fluoride than was ever intended when fluoridation began.
*Appropriate medical dosing must consider weight, need, and medical conditions.

We’ve made it through another great summer even in the midst of a great drought. That shows how strong a com-munity we have here in Canyon Lake. Nothing can keep us down!
As another summer closes, the Chamber is opening a new season: one of welcoming new members. Through the end of October, we are offering a “finder’s fee” for individuals referring new Chamber members. You could receive $25 in Chamber gift certificates! Plus, we’ll even give you a free ad in our upcoming edition of the Chamber E-Newsletter.
Here’s how it works: If a business you refer to us joins the Cham-ber this September or October as a business member, you’ll receive your $25 in gift certificates and your free ad. It’s that simple. The Chamber follows up with the calls and information to the potential member, although, it is helpful if you, as the referring individual, also inform and encourage the business to join. So there’s never been a better time to refer new members. Help us reward you by referring a potential business member today. Note: In cases where more than one individual refers the same business, we reward the individual who contacted us and the potential member first, so act now and act fast!
We would love to see all our members at the annual Chamber membership meeting being held on September 20th from 5-6:30pm at CRRC below the dam.
Before we end, we can’t close this Labor Day month without giving thanks to the many “Laborers” AKA our volunteers who keep a smile on their face and make the visitors feel welcome year around. You are the face of the Chamber and we appreciate all you do!

“The Most Excellent Flea Adventure”
by Terry Schroller
Mr. & Mrs. Freddy and Flora Flea were sitting around one day and thought they needed to get away to add variety to their diet. So, they decided to take a little trip.
Freddy said, “Let’s take the 7am ‘Fido-the-dog-potty-shut-tle’ to the great outdoors. Then we’ll hop off by the fence and transfer to ‘Bambi-the-deer-express-line’ to do a little sight-seeing around the ‘hood. You know deer forage in an area equivalent to 25,000 flea miles in one day.”
Flora says, “That sounds super! I’m so hoppy, I could jump more than a foot high right now. I hear they have wild game to feed on while traveling. Yummy!”
“I know what you mean, Fido food is getting kind of old,” Freddie replies. “And guess what? All our meals are comped.”
Flora asks, “Do you think they’ll have rest areas along the way?”
Freddy replies, “We’ll see.”The temperature was right – between 70° and 110°– and the
humidity was OK. There would be a buffet of hosts to sample along the way like rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, possums, mice, rats and maybe even a human or two.
So off they went all on their own. They didn’t have to worry about their 600 or so children because they were all adults now and on their own. The last they heard, they were living in the family room by Fluffy the cat.
You’ll never guess what happened next. Freddy and Flora never came back from their most excellent flea adventure. In-stead of the rest area Flora was concerned about, they found nothing less than a new home. It happened to be a gated sub-division with rain every three days, no matter what. Ecstasy!! Instead of an old Fido they discovered a fair skinned lass called Fifi in their new Shangri-La of high humidity, constant rains and deep pile carpet.
The moral of the story is: Why eat hamburger under the deck when you can have steak at the oasis. In the flea world of Canyon Lake, it’s like Robert Earl Keen says, “The road goes on forever and the party never ends.”

As we approach the last holiday of the season, the celebration of Labor Day remember the dangers of drinking and driving. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to both the social and eco-nomic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Since it is the last holiday of the summer season and everyone is heading back to work and school, many social events – spon-taneous and planned – are on the agenda. Naturally alcohol is in-volved in many of the celebrations. Because law enforcement is well aware of this as on Memorial Day and the 4th of July, DWI enforcement and awareness are at their highest level. As many are aware, most counties in our area including Comal, Bexar, Hayes, and Travis have some form of “No Refusal.”
Although I believe there are Constitutional issues with forced blood testing, it is in place, and we all need to realize the conse-quences of DWI. It is very expensive. Many think they cannot afford a lawyer – that is actually one of the smaller and more im-portant expenditures one should make when faced with a DWI. DWI often results in the suspension of driver’s license. You are allowed a hearing, but if not represented, your license will be suspended. At that point your only option is an occupational li-cense. With filing fees and the like another several hundred dol-lars are required for the civil suit to reinstate an occupational li-cense that is only good during work hours and to and from work. To deviate can result in arrest.
One mistake, handcuffed, at least eight hours in jail, a lifelong record, possible loss of job, monthly probation testing and fees, community service, AA meetings, alcohol and drug evaluation, yearly surcharges, loss of mobility, enhanced penalties for fu-ture offenses, and the general stigma of DWI. It’s not worth it. If drinking, choose not to drive period. Remember too, if you hurt or kill someone the offense can rise from a class B misdemeanor to a felony.

What do you do when the inevitable spills happen on my carpet? Your course of action depends upon the type of stain and the type of carpet that you purchased. However, a typical set of procedures will provide the following guidelines:
• First, remove stains as quickly as pos-sible.
• Absorb wet spills by blotting – never by rubbing or scrubbing. Blot repeatedly with white paper towels or cloth towels. Avoid using any harsh chemicals.
• For water soluble stains, such as milk, mustard, latex paint, or alcoholic beverages blot as much of the stain as possible with white towels. If any of the stain remains, spray a solution of clear mild liquid detergent with water (1/4 tsp. of detergent to 32 oz. water).
• For tougher stains like urine or coffee, use a 50-50 solution of water and white vinegar before applying the detergent.
• For dried blood or wine use a solution of 1 Tbsp. ammonia to 1 cup of water (except for wool or wool blend carpets) prior to the detergent application.
• For oil based stains, such as crayon, ink, oil-based paint or auto grease, absorb as much as possible with white towels using protec-tive gloves. Apply an oil and grease spot remover for carpets to a paper towel and continue to blot. Do not pour or spray this product directly on the carpet because it could cause damage. Repeat as necessary. Follow with the steps for water soluble stains to com-pletely remove the stains.
• For stains such as chewing gum and candle wax, freeze the stain with ice or a commercially available product in an aerosol can. Shatter the ice with a blunt object and vacuum immediately. Follow this procedure with the oil and grease spot remover. Many difficult stains such as asphalt, coffee, grease, ink and urine may require pro-fessional cleaning.
When considering a professional cleaner, it is important to ask the type of method used. Excessive water or chemicals will affect the longevity of your carpets. Too much water can contribute to mold and mildew. Steam cleaning is really hot water extraction and it is important that their equipment is capable of leaving your car-pets as dry as possible.

Here are some common electrical ques-tions that folks at your local hardware store are asked.
• I have a circuit breaker that tripped. Is this dangerous? Usually the problem is simply an overload, and you only need to run fewer appliances on the circuit. However, if it is not over-loaded and it keeps tripping, you should suspect a short. Also, look for a defective cord, socket or plug.
• Is it all right to replace a fuse or circuit breaker with a larger one to prevent them from blowing or tripping? In most cases, the answer is no. Fuses and breakers are designed to blow at certain levels to protect equipment and for fire safety.
• What is the difference between a floodlight and a spotlight? The floodlight will have a broader light pattern, while a spot-light will focus on a more narrow area.
• What is the advantage of a halogen bulb? It provides brighter, cleaner light. However, it consumes lots of electricity and gets very hot. You should ensure that it stays away from draperies, bedding, clothing and hanging plants.
• Do I need to buy a special bulb for my garage door open-er? It’s best to use a rough service bulb.
• What’s making the tubes in my fluorescent light flicker? Wiggle the tubes to make sure they are properly seated. Replace any tubes that are dark on the ends or have damaged pins. Re-place the starter if there is one.
• The dryer plug will not fit the receptacle in our new house. How can I remedy this? In most new homes, there should be four-prong dryer and range receptacles. If you have a three-prong power cord, you will need to change it.
• What is a polarized plug? One prong is bigger than the other. This feature is designed to make sure that a 110-volt plug is never put into a socket that is not a 110-volt outlet.
• What do I need to buy for a basic electrical tool kit? Nee-dle-nose pliers, insulated screwdriver, combination tool, util-ity knife, keyhole saw, continuity tester, neon circuit tester, fish tape, electrical tape and wire connectors.
Most local hardware store customer service folks will be glad to answer your questions regarding home repair and home improvement.

Safety Inspection Reduxby Bill Goetz
Fortunately, or unfortunately, state safe-ty inspections for all vehicles are a fact of life here in Texas. For most of us, they rank up there on the popularity list with drought, rattle snakes, “debt ceiling” scare tactics and 100º summer days.
With school now in session, it’s always a good idea to make sure that your vehicle – and your teen’s vehicle – is up to the task, whether it’s a safety inspection, new brakes or a simple tune up. You don’t want to start out the school semester with tardies.
This is not a good time to get “short-sheeted” either on your vehicle safety inspection. That is exactly what happens when one takes a vehicle to an inspection station that does not cover the re-quired safety points on your vehicle. Unfortunately, there are a few out there that do this disservice to the owners. A thorough inspec-tion includes a minimum of 20 points, starting with a visual inspec-tion, horn, brakes, power steering, exhaust system, and all the way through gas cap and window tint testing.
Here are a few questions you may be asking yourself before you have the safety inspection performed.
• Does a crack in my windshield need to be repaired before the inspection? The answer is not necessarily. As long as it has not “spider webbed” blocking the driver view of the road. If so, the inspector can deem the vehicle unsafe for inspection but cannot fail it.
• How dark can the tint be on the front side windows? The new Texas regulation passed in 2010 mandates that the tint, whether already installed or not, cannot be more opaque than the rating of 25 on the scale. If lower than 25, it must be removed regardless.
• My tail light lens is broken or cracked. Can I simply put red cellophane or tape over it? Good try, but it will not pass. The lens will have to be replaced prior to passing the inspection.
• Can I have tint on the front windshield? Yes, unless it comes down farther than the “AS1” line or 5” if one is not present on the windshield.
• What about my tires? Most tires have a “wear” indicator on them. The tread must not be below that mark or 2/32”.
Last, remember that you are paying for the service of the inspec-tion – not the safety sticker.

In recent months, we’ve discussed what water softeners do, why they are necessary in our area, and even some possible alternative solutions. However, this important appliance remains a mys-
tery to most homeowners. If you have had a softener installed, or purchased a home with an existing unit, how will you know if it’s working properly? If you have a softener that doesn’t seem to be functioning, should it be repaired or replaced?
First, let’s shed some light on a few common misconceptions regarding salt based softeners. A softener system consists of a narrow cylinder called a media tank, where the ion exchange resin is held, a control valve mounted on top of the media tank, and a salt storage tank. Many people imagine that their water is running through the salt, thereby adding large amounts of so-dium to the water. The water actually runs through the control valve, down through the resin, back up through a pipe in the center of the resin tank, and then out to the house.
In fact, the salt (or brine) tank only comes into play when the resin has become saturated with calcium. The resin is soaked with salt solution to replenish the softener’s capacity for calcium removal. This backwashing and brining of the resin is called a regeneration, and will typically occur in the middle of the night while no water is being used. The average lifespan of a softener can be 12 to 15 years depending on incoming water quality and maintenance.
Since water quality can vary greatly from one well to the next, the settings on a softener are crucial to ensuring proper operation. The control valve must be set correctly to reflect the incoming water conditions. Many installers will simply leave a softener set to factory defaults, which will cause ongoing issues for the homeowner. These settings are easily determined with a few well-aimed questions, and a simple test of the water. Salt usage is the best indicator of proper operation, and is determined strictly by the household water usage. A licensed water treat-ment specialist can easily help you determine how much salt you should expect to use.

Fake anti-spyware programs
LOCAL TECH SERVICEPC & MAC Support - Web Design

Searching the web for free anti-spyware programs can get you into more trouble than an accidental spyware infection. Hack-ers disguise their “fake software” as beneficial utilities, inducing the naive to install their “cure”, and have you pay for it! Here’s how to tell the difference.
The scam may start with your search for “best spyware removal software” or something similar. Search results lead the gullible to a site which promises a free scan to remove spyware on your computer. Click a button and up pops a garish warning: “YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED! DOWNLOAD THE CURE NOW!” Sometimes your machine becomes infected with a Trojan Horse declaring the same message – without searching the web.
Often, you are prompted to pay a fee before you can download the purported “cure” – that’s a gigantic clue that the cure is fake. Legitimate anti-spyware vendors offer a free trial or even a “free for personal use” version of its software. They never display an unsolicited message that just appears on your screen.
Fake anti-malware programs display names such as “Windows 7 Debug System,” “Windows 7 Anti-virus,” “Internet Security 2011,” “Windows Performance Manager,” and so on. There is no comprehensive list of fake anti-malware programs because new ones and variants appear all the time. Many are exactly the same programs posing under new names.
Use the wisdom of the crowd to find out if a professed anti-malware program is the real deal. Search for the name of the pro-gram in Google or Bing, and see what people are saying about it. If most of the results are about “how to remove” the software in question, that’s an immediate large red flag.
Anti-virus and anti-malware vendors you can trust include AVG, Avast!, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Microsoft, Trend Micro, Panda, Symantec, and McAfee, among others. Download legiti-mate programs from trusted software libraries like Tucows.com and Download.com
Be suspicious of any “free scan” that tries to alarm you with jittering Day Glow colored windows urging you to save your com-puter from “terrible infections.” The hard sell is the clue that you are about to be scammed.

This month, I thought I’d do a re-cap of some cool tech gadgets I’ve talked about for your home whether it’s a new construction or sprucing up your existing home. So here we go…
1. Obscenely large LED LCD TV. Most people buy a TV because of budget rather
than best viewing ability. In the long run, if you make room in your budget for a larger TV, you will be much happier.
2. High end Blu-ray. First, in my opinion, the manufacturers do not make a high quality $99 Blu-ray player. You should think about long-term and invest a little more to get a better product.
3. All in one remote. Yes, one remote really can do it all, so if you’re tired of wrestling with four remotes, it is well worth the in-vestment to have one and get it done. Keep in mind it’s not a $50 solution, but once you make the jump, you will be so happy you did.
4. Matching speakers. Many people think they purchase a few extra speakers and hook it up to their old existing 1970’s speaker set and to be honest that is not a good idea. Speakers definitely need to be a matched set to sound and perform the way it was designed to.
5. Rock Solid Network. Yes, the $39 router works and gets your computer on the internet, but you can’t expect it to handle a heavy work load. Expect to pay $150 for a fast media router.
6. Cell phone booster. This takes a signal from your cell phone runs it through a wire to an amplifier and then to an antenna outside

7. Lighting control. Don’t let your outside lights burn from dusk to dawn. Good functioning lighting control is an excellent way to save energy and money, and will also provide a deterrent to would-be thieves.
8. Table. Like it or not Tablets like the Ipad and the 30 other brands that are rolling out right now are in your future! Most house-holds over the next few years will have one of these web tablets.
Women are multi-taskers! We can raise kids, work jobs, make dinner, run back and forth to sporting events, leap tall buildings. .As a woman, mother, wife, and employed professional I often look at my “multi-tasking” skill as a strength, when in all actuality it is more likely a weakness.
Publilius Syrus said, “To do two things at once is to do neither.” This year’s scripture is from Romans 11:33 (MSG) “Have you ever come on anything quite like this ex-travagant generosity of God...?” I love this because it talks about how God exceeds our very understandings. We are not meant to “do it all!” God takes care of that.
The Women of Faith conference is a wonderful time of rejuvenation for women! It is a time to remind us that we are not God, but that we are loved by God in such a way that we cannot come close to comprehending the depths of his feelings for us.
Join us for this chance to surround yourself with other women who can relate in one way or another with your life. Join us in laughter, tears, wonder and the commonality that we are cared for and loved beyond our comprehension.
Women of Faith is a Christian women’s organization that has been holding non-denominational conferences at various locations around North America since 1996.
The Women of Faith Tour will be in San Antonio at the Al-amodome, October 21-22. The cost is $89 and includes two box lunches. There is a limited amount of tickets and hotels are also booking quickly. Please contact Michelle Wisdom at [email protected] for discounted group tickets and in-formation on the group of women traveling from Canyon Lake. She is a school teacher for Comal IDS.

FOOD FAIR – September 7thThe Habitat for Safe Seniors needs approximately 30 volun-
teers for most of the day during the Food Fair, starting about 8am for most of the day. All 30,000 pounds of food that arrives goes out the same day to for families in need in the Canyon Lake commu-nity. Three volunteers are needed for to help with registration, two for gate guard and traffic control, and 25 that can lift up to 40 lbs to unload the Food Bank truck of food and help load it into vehicles.
This food assistance is available for all ages. Preregistration is encouraged before the event at the HSS Thrift Shop (open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays), because it is limited to 300 fam-ilies so anyone registering the day of the Fair may unfortunately not receive the food they hope for. Registrants will need to sign a voucher to receive food. To volunteer where your help makes an immediate impact on a basic need or for information about prereg-istering, call 210-347-8207, 2174 Old Sattler Road.
