WHAT WAS IT ALL ABOUT?

The British Department for Business, Innovation andSkills, had recently reported that Israel sold, over thepast five years, military and security equipment for fourArab countries in addition to India’s Arc Rival - Pakistan.

The department oversees all military and securityexports, and publishes regular reports related to requestsfor arms purchases, its reports include all approved anddenied permits for purchasing weapons, militaryequipment and civilian items that could be used forsecurity and military operations.

The department listed countries that Israel requestedpermits to export weapons to, including Muslimcountries that do not have diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv.

ISRAEL DENIED THIS REPORT

Israel has emphatically denied allowing the sale ofany Israeli-made weapons technology to Pakistan,the arch foe of its long-term ally India.

The Israeli ministry of defense responded promptlyto initial reports of the alleged sale:

"Israel has a strategic relationship with India, thestrongest democracy in the world – which, likeIsrael, deals with terrorist threats and serves as amajor anchor in global international relations. TheState of Israel does nothing that could compromiseits excellent relations with India,"

EVEN PAKISTAN DENIED!

Even Pakistan denied the report as “baseless &misleading”

The Pakistani Inter Services Public Relationsdepartment issued a statement saying that it,“categorically denied a news report which appearedin a section of media stating that Pakistanpurchased any defense equipment from Israel. Thereport is misleading and not based on facts.”

POSSIBLE RAMIFICATIONS

Though Indian Government refrained from issuing anyofficial statement as the report is about weapons deal betweentwo Independent & Sovereign nations, it ‘may’ have an impacton strategic relations between India & Israel.

But, over the years, Indian & Israeli relationship has come tosuch an extent that these sort of reports will hardly have ‘anyconsiderable’ impact on the bilateral ties, though if true, it willcertainly upset Indian leadership.

Also, if true, it can have huge impact on Pakistan as it hasn’trecognized Israel yet, also, there is vast anti-Israeli populationin Pakistan which may alter the power equation in Pakistan.

Having said all this, it all depends if the publishedreport is true, till than things will remain in aStatus-quo.
