Ca. 1340: Loshult Bronze Barrel

Statens Historical Museum Stockholm

O ldest firearm still in existence,found 1861 in the Swedish townof Loshult.

Its form shows greatresemblance to the illustrationsof Walter de Milemete.

According to metallurgical tests,the bronze stems from themining area of the MiddleSlovakian Mountains.

O ldest and largest preservedbombard with a barrel forgedfrom iron rods, reinforced withiron bands and detachablepowder chamber.

With it, iron balls of 510kilograms could be shot 1250meters.

250 kilogram stone balls couldbe shot 2500 meters.

Ca. 1390: Bombard with Elevation Adjustment

Early adjustable artillery: A barrel forged fromrods is reinforced with three rings.

The attachment is made with two open bracketson an offset stock.

An iron rod inserted through the stock serves as apivot shaft for the elevation adjustment.

The selected elevation can be maintained with afriction lock at the rear end of the stock.

The tunable unit is mounted on a cylindricalstanchion.

Ca. 1460: Five Barreled Organ Artillery Southern Germany

Five barrels are held in a bundleby specially cut wooden boards.

The barrel bundle is held on awooden carriage with bands. Each barrel has its own touchhole. These are arrangedradially.

By turning the bundle, the nextbarrel to be fired is brought tothe top.

The largest known cannonbarrel still in existence. It has abronze pipe of 5.4 m in length,a caliber of 64 cm and a weightof 18 3/ 4 tons.

Mohammed II, the Turk, at thesiege of Constantinople, castthe bronze barrel in front of thecity walls.

The threaded powder chamberwith a diameter of ca. 50 cm isvisible.

It has an iron forged barrel witha caliber of 6.5 cm and lengthof 292.5 cm

To get more flexibility it waspreamble to have cannons withlittle weight.

Trials were made to use thickwalled, copper barrel wrappedwith hemp rope and leather.

This type of barrels howeverwere never successful.
