Grateful for Family, Friends and… Over the past week I’ve been thinking about football championships. I know there’s a lot of chatter about football championships for hometown favorites on the professional, college and high school level, but I have in mind a championship that is not on anyone’s mind, save the participants from two schools. This game is played every November on the Friday before Thanksgiving between the two Catholic seminaries in Louisiana, St. Joseph Seminary College near Covington and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans.
The “Seminary Superbowl” is a flag football game played between the two schools, and I have made a point to attend every year since becoming a priest. I was in seminary for 6 years, and I played on theflag football team every year. My overall record was 2-4, but we won my last year, so I retired on a high note.
This game is the culmination of months of practice. I say “practice” because we didn’t have much of a regular season aside from the intramural games we played with teams from Loyola University in New Orleans. I was surprised by some of the athletes we faced from Loyola – there are only so many scholarships to go around – but also that some of the Loyola intramural players would come to themorning games hungover. Needless to say, they were at a competitive disadvantage.
Even though I was never a major contributor to the team, I value the experience. My injuries were minimal, the game and practices were welcome relief from studying, and the meal after the game had a celebratory feel for both communities. I think some of the players looked forward to the meal more than the game. With so many barbecue meats, gumbo and all the fixins, it’s no surprise why.
That reminds me of another day this week that is a popular intersection of food and sports: Thanksgiving. If any families have a tradition of sharing “What I am grateful for” at the Thanksgivingmeal, I imagine that both “food” and “football” are in the top 10 in terms of frequency shared. More than likely, “family” and “friends” claim the top two spots with all the other blessings of life – hobbiesand a roof over your head to name two – rounding out the list.
It’s easy to be grateful for food and football, but are you grateful for your faith? We take it for granted that we have a faith that reveals to us the incredible mercy of God through his Son, Jesus Christ, in themidst of our world-wide family, the Catholic Church. If you and I were born in the Middle East or in China, we very likely would not have such knowledge of God. If you’re not moved to thank God foryour faith, then take a lesson from St. Paul who encourages us to thank God, regardless of feelings: “In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thess 5:18). That’s a Bible verse worth memorizing.
Peace,Fr. Matthew
