◇니코틴: 담배에 중독되게 해
- 담배를 한 모금 피우면 0.1~0.2㎎의 니코틴이 몸에 들어오고, 폐를 거쳐 7초만에 뇌로 전달
- 니코틴 60㎎(담배 30개비에 해당)이 한꺼번에 몸에 들어오면 그 즉시 사망할 정도로 치명적
- 니코틴은 자율신경계를 자극해 일시적으로 쾌감이나 안정감을 느끼게 하지만, 과하면 신경을 마비시켜 환각 상태에 이르게 함.
- 강력한 습관성 중독을 유발하기 때문에 의학적으로는 마약으로 분류됨
- 담배에 중독되는 것도 니코틴 때문
- 니코틴의 중독성은 헤로인이나 코카인과 비슷한 수준
- 니코틴은 심혈관 질환과도 관련
- 담배 한 개비를 피우면 혈압이 일시적으로 20~30mmHg 증가, LDL콜레스테롤은 증가하고 HDL콜레스테롤은 감소

◇타르: 60%가 폐로 들어감
- 담배 한 개비를 피울 때 2~3.3㎎의 타르가 발생
- 타르에는 2000여 종의 독성 물질과 20종류의 발암물질이 포함
- 독성이 강해, 재래식 화장실의 구더기를 잡는 구충제나 제충제로 이용됨
- 담배가 불에 타면서 생기는 타르는 작은 입자
- 크기가 10㎛ 이상이면 가래와 함께 몸 밖으로 배출
- 하지만 60%는 1㎛ 내외의 크기여서 배출되지 않고 폐로 들어감
- 하루에 한 갑씩, 1년 동안 담배를 피우는 사람은 한 컵 분량의 타르가 몸속에 들어있다고 보면 됨
- 이렇게 몸 안으로 들어간 타르는 호흡기 점막과 폐포에 손상을 입혀서 폐에 비정상적인 세포가 자라도록 만들고, 그게 폐암임

◇일산화탄소: 기억력 감퇴 등 유발 -담배를 많이 피우거나 담배 연기가 가득 찬 방에 있을 때 머리가 아프고 정신이 멍해지는 것은 일산화탄소 때문
-흡연을 통해 일산화탄소가 우리 몸에 들어오면 혈액의 산소 운반 능력이 떨어짐
-이는 모든 신체 기관의 기능을 떨어뜨리고 저산소증을 유발하며 노화가 빨리 진행되도록 만듦
-연자의 산소 이용률은 비흡연자보다 20~30% 낮은데, 이로 인해 흡연자는 기억력 감퇴·시력 저하·호흡 곤란·현기증 등을 겪을 가능성이 큼
-하루에 담배를 한 갑 정도 피우는 사람의 혈중 이산화탄소 함량은 2~5%이며, 이때는 지각력이 약간 감소함
-두 갑을 피우면 5~10%로 운동을 할 때 호흡 곤란을 느낌
-세 갑 이상을 피우면 10~20%로, 만성적인 두통과 가벼운 운동 시에도 호흡 곤란에 시달리게 됨

"이래도 안끊어?" 각국 흡연규제 百態 (2004. 11. 17.)
미국: 캘리포니아주는 전 세계에서 가장 강력하고 광범위하게 금연법 시행. 1993년부터 공공건물에서 1.5m 이내의 지역에서 담배를 피우는 것이 금지. 최근엔 이 거리가 6m로 늘어남. 식당, 술집, 닫힌 공간, 해변도 금연구역.
영국: 정부가 2004년모든 공공장소에서의 흡연 금지 결정
부탄: 세계 최초로 국가 전체가 금연구역(2005년). 전국 어디서든지 담배 판배 금지법 제정. 가게, 호텔, 음식점, 술집 등에서의 담배 판매를 불법으로 규정. 위반시 벌금과 영엉허가치소. 부탄인에게 담배를 파는 외국인은 형사처벌
프랑스: 2003년 10월 담배 가격을 20% 전격 인상. 흡연율을 낮추고, 65억유로(약 82조 1450억원)의 국민건강관련 예산을 확보하기 위함.

부탄, 담배 소지 승려에 3년 징역 선고(2011. 3. 6)
세계 최초의 금연국가를 선언한 왕정국가 부탄에서 최근 한 불교 승려가 약 3천원 상당의 씹는 담배를 소지한 혐의로 3년형을 선고받았다고 타임즈 오브 인디아가 2011년 3월 6일 보도함.
신문에 따르면 소남 체링(23) 승려는 지난 1월 인도에서 귀국하던 중 국경지대에서 담배 소지 혐의로 체포돼 구속됐음.
부탄은 지난 2005년 담배 판매를 법으로 전면 금지한 데 이어 지난해 2010년 강력한 담배 통제법을 공포한 바 있음.
이 법률에 따르면 경찰이 흡연 단속과 밀수 담배 적발을 위해 가택수색까지 할 수 있으며, 흡연자나 담배 판매자가 마약 통제기구에 의해 적발된 뒤 담배 관련 제품 수입 관세 신고서를 제출하지 못하면 5년 이상의 징역형을 살게 되는 것으로 알려지고 있음. 56
아일랜드: 지난 2004. 3월 모든 식당과 술집, 건물 내부에서의 흡연을 금지하는 법률을 제정. 위반 때는 3000유로(약 376만원)의 벌금.
네덜란드: 2004. 1월 1일부터 공공장소에서의 흡연을 금지. 내년에는 호텔과 식당·술집 등에도 확대 적용, 3년 내에 현재 30%선인 흡연율을 5%로 낮출 방침.
노르웨이: 2004. 6월 1일부터 식당·술집·카페에서 흡연을 금지. 지난 30년 동안 담배광고가 금지됐었고, 담배 한 갑 가격이 70크로네(약 1만2000원)에 달하지만 흡연율은 아직도 30%를 넘는다.
몬테네그로: 흡연율이 40%에 달해 유럽에서 가장 높은 국가 중 하나. 지난 8월 내년 초까지 한시 시행되는 흡연금지법이 도입됐다. 공공장소 흡연과 담배광고는 물론, TV에서 담배를 피우거나 보여주는 것도 금함.

연구팀은 쥐를 암수 10마리씩 10개 그룹으로 분류한 뒤 이들에게 각기 다른 음식을 줬다. 암수 각각 한 그룹에게만 정상적인 음식과 물을 주고 나머지 그룹에게는 미국 몬산토사의 GM 옥수수인 NK603을 먹이거나 이 옥수수가 내성을 갖고 있는 몬산토사의 제초제 '라운드 업'을 물에 희석해 조금씩 먹게 한 것이다. 그 결과 옥수수와 제초제 모두 문제를 일으켰으며 특히 암컷에 미치는 영향이 치명적이라는 결론을 얻었다.
14개월쯤 지났을 때까지 정상 그룹에선 아무런 증상도 나타나지 않은 데 비해 GM 옥수수나 제초제를 먹은 그룹의 암컷 쥐 가운데 10~30%에게서 종양이 발견됐다. 24개월이 됐을 때는 정상 그룹 암컷의 종양 발생 비율이 30% 수준이었던 데 비해 그렇지 않은 그룹에선 그 비율이 50~80%로 높아졌다. 종양 크기도 GM 옥수수 등을 먹인 그룹이 정상 그룹보다 2~3배 정도 컸다.
그동안 GM 농작물의 안전성 연구는 해당 작물을 먹인 쥐를 90일 동안 관찰한 결과를 토대로 이뤄졌다. 90일을 주기로 한 실험에서는 GM 농작물의 안전성에 문제가 없는 것으로 결론이 났다. 이번처럼 실험 대상 쥐의 수명에 해당하는 기간(이번에는 2년)에 걸쳐 연구를 진행한 것은 처음이다.
