    The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), the national voice o

    the steel, steel pipe and tube industry, is pleased to provide this 2012

    Directory o its members. For more than a century, Canadas steel industry

    has played a vital role in our national industrial development, and a major

    employer and contributor in many communities across the country.

    The breadth and importance o Canadas steel industry is substantial:

    Canadas steel companies directly employ some 25,000

    Canadians, and support an additional 100,000 spin-o jobs;

    Canadas steel companies generate $12-14 billion in

    annual shipments; and

    CSPA members operate facilities in eight provinces.

    Steel is also highly integrated into our lives. On average, every Canadian

    owns 900 kilograms o steel. Steel is also an integral part o Canadas

    inrastructure, vital in the construction o roads and bridges, in municipalutilities and in serving the energy needs or homes and businesses.

    Steel is essential to developing a sustainable Canadian industrial economy

    and society in the 21st century. Steel is the root o Canadas industrial tree,

    supporting many o the countrys most important industrial clusters, includ-

    ing automotive, construction, energy, mining and transportation.

    Government policies that support the growth o Canadian manuacturing

    help ensure the steel industry continues to be a key sector in Canadas

    economy, meeting the needs o domestic and export customers with high

    quality, competitive and innovative Canadian products.

    As we like to say, Canadian steel makes Canada stronger.

    A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

    The manuacturing sector is an integral part o Canadas economy and an

    important source o good jobs or millions o Canadians.

    Canadian steel is a driving orce in innovation and advancement. The indus-

    try has invested more than $2 billion since 2005 in new technologies and

    better processes to make Canadian steel more innovative, less expensive and

    stronger than ever. These investments are paying dividends. More than halo all types o steel did not exist 15 years ago.

    Meanwhile, we have signifcantly decreased our environmental ootprint.

    The energy required to produce a tonne o steel has dropped over 25% since

    1990, and in the same period the steel industrys greenhouse gas emissions

    have been cut 17%.

    Steel is also a major actor in the North American movement towards energy

    independence. Almost all energy sources require steel in some capacity,

    rom the construction o wind turbines and solar panels to transmission lines,

    drilling and pipelines.

    To ensure that the Canadian steel industry remains strong, it is vital that

    governments pursue pro-manuacturing policiestax measures, programs

    and regulationsthat strengthen the competitiveness o Canadian industry

    and create and sustain thousands o good Canadian jobs. This includes

    policies that:

    Drive innovation to encourage stronger productivity through invest-

    ments in advanced technologies and development o a highly-skilled

    workorce;

    Enable Canadian industry to compete in domestic and export mar-

    kets through rules-based trade to address non-market distortions;

    Promote industry sustainability through balanced regulations that

    combine environmental, technological, and economic actors;

    Ensure advanced Canadian manufacturing has access to competi-

    tive, reliable energy sources, that support urther development o

    Canadas energy resources, both conventional and newer sources;

    and

    Encourage the development of a world-class, competitive transpor-tation system and the investments necessary to address Canadas

    inrastructure gap.

    Steel is an integral part of major Canadian industrial clusters. Steel

    manuacturing, combined with supplier and customer industries, is a

    signifcant job creator that drives economic growth in communities

    across the country.

    Steel is fundamental to the modern infrastructure which meets the

    needs o Canadian industry and society.

    Canadas steel companies employ highly-skilled workers in many

    communities across Canada.

    Steel products are important to Canadians in their personal lives, in

    their workplaces, and in their communities.

    Todays technologies and processes make better, stronger steel in a

    way that is more sustainable to the environment than ever beore

    and a commitment to innovation will ensure more investment and

    new products in the uture. More steel is recycled than all other recyclable materials combined,

    and it can be recycled infnitely. Annually, about 7-8 million tonnes

    o steel is recycled in Canada.
