Overview

This directory lists key personnel, financial, production and system configuration datafor nearly 3,600 regulated U.S. and Canadian utilities, as well as major non-utilitygenerating companies and service providers. All companies were surveyed directly and,where applicable, their responses were reconciled with and supplemented by datafrom public filings. All financial and production data reflect FY 2012 or FY 2013operations. Utility mergers, acquisitions and name changes are cited in a separatetable, and listings of associations, agencies and commissions, reliability councils, powerpools and independent system operators (ISO/RTO) are provided along with aglossary of industry terminology and abbreviations in use in the directory. A map ofthe domestic high-voltage transmission system is also included in this edition.

I. COMPANY CLASSIFICATIONPrimary listings for utilities appear within the state/province where they areheadquartered with cross-references to other states in which they have generatingplants or service territories. If the listing for a company is a cross-reference and not aprimary listing, the company name is printed in italics with a notation to refer to theprimary listing for further information. The cross-references are not included in thesummary company counts at the beginning of each state or provincial section. Servicesprovided by utilities are identified as Electric Generation (Gen or G), Transmission (T),Distribution (D) or Other; Gas Exploration/Production (Prod), Transmission Pipeline (TP),Local Distribution Company (LDC), Transmission & Distribution (T&D), Storage, orOther; Water (W), Wastewater (WW), or Sewer/Solid Waste (SW); andTelecommunications AMR, Municipal Data Network, Voice or SCADA (I), or Broadband,Cable TV, Cable Modem or DSL, Fiber Leasing, Internet Service, Local Telephone - CLEC,Long Distance, Video on Demand, or Wireless Network (E).

ASSOC (Professional or Trade Association): A professional or trade association.

COOP (Rural Electric Cooperative Utility, includes G&T Coops): A utility ownedcooperatively by its customers rather than by private stockholders. Return oninvestment takes the form of products or services rather than dividends.

COUNTY (Country Government Utility): A utility owned and operated by a countyagency.

DIST (District Government Utility): A utility owned and operated by a tribal orgovernment district or authority.

ERO (Electric Reliability Organization): North American Electric Reliability Corp isthe FERC-designated electric reliability organization for North America.

GOVT (Federal Government Utility): A utility/project owned and operated by theFederal government. In the U.S., this power is usually sold to other entities fortransmission and distribution.

HOLD (Utility Holding Company): A company which exercises control over aregulated utility and, in many cases, non-regulated holdings as well, either throughownership of sufficient stock or other non-operating interest.

IOU (Investor-owned Utility): A utility operated as a private, tax-paying business inwhich management is not associated with any government agency. Financial securitiesrepresenting assets are held by private citizens or investment groups.

IOU-DIV (Investor-owned Utility Division): An operating unit of an investor-ownedutility company serves areas of the parent utility in a semi-autonomous arrangement.

IRRIG (Irrigation District): A utility which generates electricity as a byproduct ofsupplying water. This electricity may be distributed within the district or sold to otherutilities.

ISO (Independent System Operator): An independent transmission systemoperator.

JTACT (Joint Action Agency): A regional organization formed by individual utilitiesto jointly pool resources to build or finance generation and/or transmission systems,and/or to share or jointly finance other services to the members.

MKT (Non-utility Power Marketer): A non-utility wholesale power marketer.

MUNI (Municipal or Local Utility): A utility owned by a local municipality andoperated as a department thereof.

MUTUAL: A utility owned by the customers who share jointly in its profits andliabilities.

NERC: The North American Electric Reliability Council.

NUG (Non-utility Generator): An independent power producer or autoproducer thatgenerates electricity or manages the operation of power generating facilities, but is notconsidered to be a public utility subject to regulation.

Certain types of NUGs, however, are still subject to some requirements of the PublicUtility Regulatory Policies Act.

PP (Power Pool): Voluntary organization of utilities, non-utility generators, state orregional electric associations and power marketers for pooling power purchases.

PPD/PUD (Public Power District/Public Utility District): A utility owned andoperated by a state or regional agency.

PROV (Provincial Utility): A utility owned and operated by a Canadian provincialgovernment agency.

RE (Regional Entity): To improve the reliability of the bulk power system, eightregional entities (representing the NERC regions) oversee compliance enforcementand reliability standard development through the North American Electric Reliability Corp(NERC). The companies that belong to these entities account for virtually all theelectricity supplied in the United States, Canada and a portion of Baja CaliforniaNorte, Mexico. NERC’s proposal to delegate enforcement authority to these entities ispending before the Federal Regulatory Commission (FERC).

REG (State or Regional Electric Association): A regional or state association ofmunicipal or rural electric cooperative utilities.REP (Non-utility Retail Energy Provider): A non-utility retail electricity provider,separate fee is paid by customers directly to the regulated utility providing distributionservices.

RTO (Regional Transmission Organization): A regional transmission organization.SERV (Utility Service Company): A utility service company owned by a regulatedutility or utility company.STATE (State Government Utility): A utility owned and operated by a stategovernment agency.SVC (Non-utility Service Company): A non-utility provider of energy-relatedservices.TERR (Territorial Utility): A utility owned and operated by a U.S. Territorialgovernment agency.TRANS (Transmission Utility): A specialized utility company that owns and/oroperates only transmission facilities. Some are owned by major utilities and operatelines associated with a specific generating project. Others are controlled by a utility, butact for and through the state commission to supply distribution companies within thestate, or are merchant operations.WGEN (Wholesale Generating Utility): A utility that generates electricity solely forsale to other systems rather than on-system users.

Electric Plant in Service: The book value ($) of physical assets of the sector of thecompany concerned (e.g., “Distribution” would comprise the installed value ofsubstations, poles, conductors, transformers, etc., as represented by the total of alldistribution capital accounts. (“Other” might include headquarters buildings,laboratories, general usage fleet vehicles, information centers, or any facility notclassified under the accounts for “Generation”, “Transmission” or “Distribution”.)

Electric Revenue: Gross revenues ($) from the sale of electricity to all classes ofcustomers.

Electric Operating Expenses: Includes power production, transmission anddistribution expenses as well as the cost of purchased power, as applicable.

Net Inc/Earnings: Net electric income and earnings ($) as taken from thecompany’s income statement

IV. CUSTOMER/EMPLOYEE DATATOT Retail Cust: Total number of customers supplied with electricity by the system,including residential, commercial, industrial, and other. For utilities, represents ultimatecustomers ONLY, with sales for resale customers reported separately, if available.Wholesale Customers: Wholesale (sales for resale) customers, if available.TOT Customers: Total customers - ultimate consumers (retail) and wholesalecustomers.Avg Rate (¢/kWh): Total electric revenues within each customer classificationdivided by total annual kWh sales within the same classification.Avg Use (kWh/yr): Total annual kWh sales within each customer classificationdivided by the average customers/month in the same classification.Elec (FT/PT) Employees: Total number of full-time (FT) and part-time (PT)employees in the electric department.TOTAL (FT/PT) Employees: Total number of full-time (FT) and part-time (PT)employees in the company, if available.

V. SYSTEM DESIGN/PERFORMANCENet Generation (MWh): Input (MWh) to the system measured at the high-voltageterminals of the generating station’s step-up transformers. It equals gross generationas measured at the generator terminals, minus station use.Power Purchased (MWh): MWh purchased from off-system sources, including otherutilities and all types of non-utility generators or power marketers.Net Other (MWh): Net MWh wheeled, exchanged or transferred.Elec Sales (MWh): Sales in MWh to any and all purchasers including off-systemsales.Elec Sales (MWh) Ult Cons: Sales in MWh to ultimate customers (retail).Elec Sales (MWH) Resale: Sales in MWh to customers for resale (wholesale).Generating Cap (MW): Total nameplate capacity (MW) of all generating units incommercial service. It does not include auxiliary or house units. Where a unit hasbeen permanently derated or uprated, the revised rating is used. Firm capacity availableor committed by interconnected suppliers is not included. Meters (#): Number of meters.

Distr Line Transformers (#): Number of individual distribution transformers (notbanks) supplying customer service, whether on poles, pad, in vaults or otherpoint-of-service locations.

Distr LT Capacity (MVa): Sum of nameplate capacities (MVa) of all distribution linetransformers in service.

Incoming Substa Capacity (MVa): Sum of normal nameplate ratings (MVa) of allsubstation transformers that receive input from sources other than those on thereceiving system itself.

Distr (OH) Pole Miles: A pole mile is one mile of overhead (OH) line structures,regardless of how many circuits or conductors are supported by those structures.One mile of poles, whether carrying two 3-phase circuits or a single-phase conductor,constitutes a pole mile.

Distr (UG) Cir Miles: An underground (UG) circuit mile is a physical length of onemile of a distribution cable circuit, whether 3-phase of single-phase, and whetheroccupying conduit banks with other circuits or not. One mile of a 3-phase conductorcable or of three single-phase cables constituting a 3-phase circuit extending over aone-mile distance, equals one circuit mile. One mile of a single-phase cable operatingas a circuit is also a circuit mile.

Distr (TOTAL) Miles: Sum of (OH) and (UG) miles. Distribution voltages have beenclassified into the four most commonly used voltage classes (5, 15, 25, and 35 kV).Voltages falling between classifications have been placed in the higher grouping.

Trans (OH) Pole Miles: Total (pole) miles of individual transmission circuits of allsystem voltages carried on overhead (OH) structures of any type.

Trans (UG) Circuit Miles: Total (circuit) miles of individual transmission circuits of allsystem voltages run underground (UG) in duct banks, direct-buried or submarineinstallations

Trans (TOTAL) Miles: Sum of (OH) and (UG) miles. Transmission voltages have beenclassified into the ten most commonly used voltage classes (34.5, 69, 115, 138, 161,230, 345, 500, 765 kV and HVDC). Voltages falling between classifications havebeen place in the higher grouping.

VI. MAJOR INTERCONNECTIONSCompanies with which the system or utility is tied through transmission lines overwhich electric energy can be interchanged.

VII. MEMBERSMember utilities, municipalities, non-utility generators (IPP), energy companies, powermarketers (PM) or regional agencies or associations. When available, the state in whichthe company or municipality is located is included in parentheses. An [a] indicates anassociate or non-voting member.

VIII. PURCHASED POWER SOURCESThe utilities or non-utility generating companies or power marketers from which theutility purchases power.

IX. PLANT INFORMATIONSpecific data for jointly-owned utility plants are listed ONLY in the entry for thecompany operating that plant. Non-utility plants are listed with primary developersand/or owning operators with equity share cited, if available, and further identified as(A) Autoproducer or (P) Private power. Each major plant type/technology is identified bya symbol followed by the specific technology, fuel(s), operating unit count, year online, and capacity (MW). If available, net generation (MWh) is also cited.∆ CC (Combined-cycle): A generating installation in which the exhaust heat from a

gas or combustion turbine produces steam to power a steam turbine.∆ CCSS (Combined-cycle): A combined-cycle single shaft configuration.∆ FC (Fuel cell): A generating installation powered by fuel cells.∆ GT (Gas turbine): A generating installation with a turbine in which combustion

chambers (fired directly by oil or gas) produce a hot gas which drives the turbine rotor.∆ GT/H (Gas turbine w/heat recovery): A generating installation with a gas

turbine which has heat recovery.∆ GT/S (Gas turbine w/steam sendout): A generating installation with a gas

turbine which has steam-sendout.❑ HY (Hydroelectric): A hydroelectric generating installation (usually

conventional).❑ HY-P (Hydroelectric, pump storage): A hydroelectric generating installation in

which, during off peak hours, the turbines are generator-driven to pump water from alower to a higher reservoir. At peak times, the water stored in the upper reservoir isreleased through the turbines to generate electricity.∆ IC (Internal combustion): An engine-driven generating installation where the

internal combustion of the fuel acts directly to produce mechanical power to drive thegenerator.∆ IC/H (Internal combustion engine w/heat recovery): An engine-driven

generating installation with heat recovery where the internal combustion of the fuelacts directly to produce mechanical power to drive the generator.∆ ORC (Organic Rankine-cycle): A generating installation with an organic

Rankine-cycle (vapor) turbine or organic Rankine-cycle energy converter.∆ PV (Photovoltaic): A generating installation powered by photovoltaic cells.❍ ST (Steam, fossil-fired): A generating installation with a steam turbine-generator

set powered by fossil fuel.✽ ST; UR (Steam, nuclear-powered): A generating installation with a steam
