From the PresidentWith our Annual General Meeting (AGM) only sixweeks away, the COC Executive is busy planning andworking through various items in preparation for thisimportant meeting with our members.

A reminder that this year, the COC will conduct ourAGM electronically via Go-To meeting so all COCRepresentatives can participate in the meeting onlinein their locations of choice. The official invitationalong with various documents, including a one-page“How to use Go-To meeting” will be shared with theCOC representatives shortly.

At the upcoming AGM, the COC would like to hold adiscussion with our member societies’ representativeson the future of the COC Newsletter. For many years,the COC has published a quality bi-monthly newsletterwith only original materials, along withannouncements, information and photos on shows andother events. We would like to know from our readersand members:

● if the COC Newsletter continues to be relevant andvalue-added;

● if you like to continue receiving this newsletter;

● and if yes, what would be the preferred format,content and frequency?

I look forward to an interactive and productivediscussion at our upcoming AGM.

While the 2016 Spring Show season is winding down,this will also be the COC’s last newsletter before thesummer break. I want to remind our member societiesabout the COC Travel Grant(http://canadianorchidcongress.ca/coctravel/), which isavailable to smaller societies to help them bring inguest speakers and the deadline for applications is June1, 2016.

With a few false starts in the East Coast, I think I canconfidently say Spring is here and Summer is justaround the corner! I am sure many of us are busyrepotting and adjusting to a busy growing schedule. Iwould like to end by wishing everyone a happy andsafe summer!

New at the Ottawa Show

The COC's Educational Pilot series at the OttawaOrchid show a few weeks ago was a hit for beginnerhobbyists. The Pilot series was designed for use byorchid societies at their shows as well as an in-housetool to aid new members during your monthlymeetings.

Webinars on re-potting your first Phalaenopsis, basicculture and common pests and diseases, samples ofpotting materials and on site facilitators came togetherat the Ottawa show with a standing room onlyreception.

Jan Johns developed the series with detailedanticipation sheets for participants prior to thewebinar presentation, followed by an Q and A sessionfollowup. What an eager audience, hanging on toevery word of the webinars in progress. Some evenstayed in their seats so they wouldn't miss the nextrecording in the series.

Jan also developed an in depth 'how to' for facilitatorsat your society so that all of the materials, questions(& answers) and webinars are easily handled by yourown volunteers.

After the sessions, some vendors were swamped withrequests and information on potting materials. Thanksto Jay Norris for his humorous and delightfulrepotting webinar that had some beginners realizingthat their watering habits were the same as Jay'sgrandmother.

An exciting educational pilot put together by Jan forthe new hobbyist that helps get them started on theright path. It was also very obvious that many of thesehobbyists at the show were potential new societymembers!

Kudos to Jan & Jay! Jan's past teaching experiencealong with her extensive background in Ontario'sschool science curriculum brought it all together alongwith Jay Norris' sense of humour, judging knowledge,as well as his years of mentoring, cumulated in adelightful and fun series for the beginners.

Our COC exhibit also introduced Orchid-gami to theCanadian public. Designed as a teaching tool by theSmithsonian's Orchid Conservation team, the paperpunch outs were used to highlight the local

Conservation's display on Showy Lady's Slippersorchids. Purdon fen has the largest display ofCypripedium reginae in Canada. Handouts of thepunch outs combined with pamphlets on theConservation site delighted many and helped bringhome the beauty of our own 65 native orchids inCanada.

More on these initiatives at the AGM in June.
