CANADA’S NATIONAL NEWSPAPERThe National Post is published by CanWest Global Communications, and is the leading national newspaper in Canada. Some considered it to be the first newspaper in the country, which truly reflects the perspectives and opinions of the population from coast to coast. In addition, the National Post has brilliantly incorporated the Financial Post as the premium business section in this innovative publication. This said, the National Post would be a valuable addition to your microfilm collection and a useful resource for national news.

THE NEW CANADIAN was founded in 1938 by English speaking Japanese students from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver). During WWII the paper was relocated to Kaslo B.C. - one of the infamous internment camps. At this time it became bilingual to accommodate those Japanese who had been interned and whose first language remained Japanese. After WWII the publication moved to Winnipeg for a period of 4 years before relocating to Toronto.

Over the years the paper has been awarded the Order of Canada twice for its outstanding contribution to the welfare of Canadians of Japanese origin.

With the addition of issues from 1993, THE NEW CANADIAN is now available from 1939 to 2001. Total collection: 73 Reels.

Poland

THE POLISH CANADIAN COURIER

(Kurier Polsko-Kanadyjski) was the first private independent Polish newspaper in Canada. Published as a bilingual paper from 1972 to 1986 as The Polish Canadian Courier, it continues today under new ownership as The New Courier (Nowy Kurier)

The Polish Canadian Courier was unique in Canada due to its rich documentation of Polish “communities” throughout the world. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Polish settlement in Thunder Bay, Courier carried in-depth articles about the Polish Kaszubian settlers and their descendants as well as an overall

look at Kaszubian culture. In addition this bilingual (English/Polish) publication enjoyed a strong cultural focus on literature, cinema and theatre.

Acclaimed for its excerpts from Slavic, Latin, Germanic publications across Canada and personal interviews with editors from Chinese, Greek and Japanese newspapers. William Markiewicz, Editor and Publisher, was honoured by the multi-lingual ethnic press for his help in promoting the interests of people from a variety of ethnic groups. The President of the American Slavic Institute of New York, Mr. Vladimir Kozak, has praised the Polish Canadian Courier as “the best”.

SILVER HALIDE OR VESICULAR MICROFILM?COMMONWEALTH IMAGING will provide all newspaper backfile orders on silver halide duplicating film. Orders for current annual subscriptions can be supplied on either silver halide or vesicular microfilm depending on the customers’ requirements.

Silver Halide MicrofilmAdvantages:

• Archival characteristics for long term storage.• Produces a crisp, clean image to view or print.• Provides a positive image, allowing user to view newspapers in their original form.

Disadvantages:• Not as durable as vesicular film and can scratch easily in high-use libraries.• Requires some care in handling and storage.

Vesicular MicrofilmAdvantages:

• Good quality viewing characteristics similar to silver halide.• Some pricing/cost advantage.• Highly durable, offers excellent working product.• Offers reasonable working prints.

Disadvantages:• Not archival. Image may fade over time.

WHY NEWSPAPERS ON MICROFILM?Save money!Compare the costs of microfilm with the costs of paperbound volumes. You’ll find newspapers on microfilm save you valuable budget dollars.

Save space! On the average, microfilm takes up to 90% less space than bound volumes.

Obtain eyewitness accounts of history - today! With newspapers on microfilm, you can furnish your patrons with news coverage of Canada’s (and the world’s) most historic events and personalities. These first hand accounts are virtually unobtainable elsewhere.

Locate information quickly!Microfilm allows researchers to retrieve research data quickly. Information is easy to find - no more searching through awkward, bound volumes.

Maintain a durable, permanent resource!Microfilm stands up to your patrons’ usage. Even if the original newspaper were available, its fragile conditions would make it unsuitable for research.

THE APT BOOKSCAN 2400RA™

West Canadian is proud to offer additional solutions to augment its existing document scanning, records management, newspaper archiving and digital printing services in Canada. High-volume digitization requires speed, quality, and the flexibility to work on site or remotely. West Canadian’s new Kirtas APT BookScan 2400RA™ provides the highest quality image capture system, most powerful processors, expansive storage and the option for increased productivity through remote access.

Superior Image Quality

West Canadian’s BookScan APT 2400RA™ is equipped with high-quality, digital cameras rather than traditional scanner technology to capture page images. Its two 16.7 mega pixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II digital cameras photograph each right and left-hand page simultaneously through the cameras’ 24-70mm Zoom EF lenses. Resolution can be set to 300 or 400 pixels per inch, with the ability to interpolate to 600 DPI through BSE software.

Robotics More Gentle Than the Human Hand

The book rests gently in the patented SmartCradle™ Dynamic Book Handler, which automatically adjusts to compensate for the decreasing number of pages on the right side as they are turned and captured. The SmartCradle™ maintains the book open at exactly 110 degrees throughout the process, providing a low-stress support for rare and fragile books. The SureTurn™ robotic arm reduces the need for manipulating pages by hand, which is most critical in the case of old or fragile bound documents. The computer-controlled arm uses an adjustable vacuum system, in tandem with page fluffers to gently pick up and turn one page at a time.

Quality Assurance Through Technology

To assure only one page is picked up and none are missed, the APT 2400RA™ is equipped with the Page Edge Sensor, which monitors the APT’s performance and adjusts the head’s position as needed. The Enhanced Page Separator helps to separate the individual pages while the Page Edge Sensor monitors the page lift to make sure one, and only one page is turned at a time. If a page is missed, or multiple pages are lifted, the APT 2400RA™ will pause and allow the operator to take corrective action.

Productivity Through Speed and Simplicity

The APT BookScan 2400RA can capture at an amazing 2400 pages per hour, and that’s not the only feature designed to increase productivity. The APT Manager—the software that runs the APT system—is highly intuitive.

Leveraging Metadata

With our new APT BookScan 2400RA™ we have the only solution that integrates metadata into the production process to ensure seamless workflow and inventory control. We simply scan the book’s bar code, and the APT Manager searches the selected library database for any descriptive metadata available—including MARC, MARC21, DublinCore, MODS, and other formats—and saves it in the Metadata folder for that particular book. APT Manager and BookScan Editor also produce technical metadata during book scanning and post-processing for authenticity and archival purposes. Where books are going to be reprinted ONIX metadata is included in the metadata folder.

The APT BookScan 2400RA

The 2400RA includes a high performance Intel Blade server that allows for simultaneous image capture, image processing, quality control, and OCR processing. In addition, the 2400RA is configured to allow for remote access processing, which means while our image technician is digitizing books, other technicians can be using Bookscan Editor software for image processing and quality control. OCR processing can be working on other books, all without the need for moving files from one server to another.
