keep the FAT OFF New research suggests tummy tucks can lead to lasting weight loss A study in the October issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by Swiss researchers suggests that patients who have undergone abdominoplasty following bariatric surgery (a procedure which reduces the size of the stomach to help patients reduce food intake and lose weight) were more likely to keep weight off, regaining an average of less than 1 kilogram a year compared with 1.8 kilograms annually for bariatric patients who didn’t have abdominoplasty procedures. At North Adelaide Medical Centre in Adelaide we found this new study to be of interest too for many of our patients who are concerned about their sagging skin and excess belly fat, following bariatric surgery. In the study, Tripp Holton, assistant professor of plastic surgery at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine stated that contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck can provide “a second wave of elation” that helps a patient maintain their new shape and may also help motivate the patient to lose more weight if necessary.

New research suggests tummy tucks canlead to lasting weight loss

A study in the October issue of Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery by Swiss researchers suggests that patients who haveundergone abdominoplasty following bariatric surgery (aprocedure which reduces the size of the stomach to helppatients reduce food intake and lose weight) were more likelyto keep weight off, regaining an average of less than 1kilogram a year compared with 1.8 kilograms annually forbariatric patients who didn’t have abdominoplasty procedures.

At North Adelaide Medical Centre in Adelaide we foundthis new study to be of interest too for many of our

patients who are concerned about their sagging skin andexcess belly fat, following bariatric surgery.

In the study, Tripp Holton, assistant professor of plasticsurgery at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine

stated that contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck can provide “a second wave of elation” that

helps a patient maintain their new shape and may also help motivate the patient to lose

more weight if necessary.
