Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty) in Washington, DC

• Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure commonly referred to as tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Marwan Khalifeh frequently performs tummy tuck procedures in Washington DC. The goal of the tummy tuck procedure is to make the abdomen firmer.

• This procedure involves removing excess fat and skin from the bottom of the abdomen to tighten the fascia and muscle of the abdominal wall. Tummy tuck procedures in Washington DC differ in scope. The procedures are usually subdivided into categories based on the extent of the surgery. A partial or mini tummy tuck procedure only takes an hour or two whereas; a Belt Lipectomy can take from two to five hours.

General Procedure: Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

• A standard abdominoplasty surgery takes approximately two to three hours to perform. It is often combined with liposuction to produce a pleasing waste line contour. During the procedure, an incision is made and the surgeon carefully dissects through the fat to reach your abdominal wall muscles. The dissection then proceeds at the interface between the fat and the muscles, elevating the skin/fat off the muscles from the pubic area all the way to the rib cage. the only exception is the navel, which is left attached to the abdominal wall muscles. The second step involves tightening the muscles back to the midline. The third step involves removing the excess skin and fat. The fourth step involves a carefull reapproximation of the skin to minimize scarring. A plastic tube called a drain is left in place to collect excess fluid that will form after surgery. The final step involves the recreation of the umilicus using both the old umbilicus in combination with skin from the abdominal wall.

Risks of Tummy Tuck surgery• Complications of a tummy tuck can include many risks both related to the surgery

and to the anesthesia given during the surgery. The tummy tuck operation, when performed on a healthy nonsmoking candidate by a board certified plastic surgeon, is a very safe operation. As with any surgery, there are risks involved however. Minor risks tend to happen more than any major problems, and are often treateable. Some of these risks include bleeding, infections, scarring at the incision, seroma, hematoma, skin loss, sensation loss, and belly button necrosis. More major risks including risks of anesthesia can occur, such as heart problems, lung problems, clots, arrythmias, which can be very serious or even fatal. Preoperative testing or clearance may be required to make sure you are a good candidate.

• Dr. Khalifeh recommends consideration of blood thinners (lovenox) in all patients undergoing a tummy tuck procedure to help minimize the risk of a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs). This is especially true for combination abodminoplasty cases such as mommy makeovers.

Anesthesia Used for a Tummy Tuck Procedure at our Washington, DC Facility

• A traditional tummy tuck procedure may be performed using intravenous sedation (twightlight) or general anesthesia, although general anesthesia is more typical

• A Belt Lipectomy/Body Lift tummy tuck requires general anesthesia and is typically done in the hospital.

• Generally, surgeons prefer complete sedation no matter which tummy tuck procedure is being performed. This ensures the patient’s abdominal muscles remain relaxed during the tummy tuck procedure. This allows Dr. Khalifeh to complete the tummy tuck procedure quicker because unexpected movements will not hamper him. However, Dr. Khalifeh may use localized anesthesia on occasion for the less invasive mini tummy tuck procedure in Washington DC.

• A Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck Procedure in Washington, DC• If you have at least one of the following conditions, you are an ideal candidate for a

tummy tuck procedure:• Sagging or excess skin in the abdomen ,Weakened and separated abdominal

muscles ,Excess fat that is concentrated in the abdomen ,Preferable Health Characteristics: ,In good health ,At ideal weight or at least weight stable (not gaining or trying to lose weight) , No future pregnancies planned

Naval Sculpting and Reattachment• The majority of tummy tuck surgeries involve

repositioning of the navel. This is done so the abdomen appears more natural. A new navel may be sculpted or the existing navel is reattached.

• Tightening the Abdominal Muscles• As we age, our abdominal muscles become looser.

During your tummy tuck procedure in Washington DC, Dr. Khalifeh will remove any pockets of excess fat. He will also remove extra skin and tighten your lax abdominal muscle mass in your stomach.

• Your abdominal muscles are pulled and stitched together to make them look more toned. A tummy tuck procedure usually narrows the waistline as well.

Eliminating Stretch Marks During Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

• If you have stretch marks, Dr. Khalifeh may be able to improve or even eliminate their appearance during the skin removal process of your tummy tuck procedure. Any of your stretch marks that are located a little below your navel can usually be removed. Many times any remaining stretch marks will appear less prominent after your tummy tuck procedure.

• Skin Removal During Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)• After your abdominal muscles are tightened, your skin is pulled down and the

excess is trimmed. Dr. Khalifeh may use liposuction to remove unwanted fat pockets before pulling the skin taut.

• Closing the Incision(s)• Once your surgery is complete, Dr. Khalifeh will suture your incision together with

surgical stitches. A surgical drain is inserted. The drain speeds up your healing process and alleviates pain caused by fluid buildup under the skin. The surgical drain is generally removed about a week after your surgery and your stitches within two weeks.

• You will receive a compression garment. This helps minimize your bruising and swelling. It also supports the tissues and helps your skin maintain its new shape.
