001-008 Camshaft
Install
CAUTION
The camshaft s are different. They must beinstalled in the correct bank. If they are notinstalled correctly, the engine can be seriouslydamaged.
The camshaft s for the K38 and K50 are different, however the installation procedure is the same.
Make sure the correct camshaft is installed. Seethe CPL for the engine being serviced. Some of the newer K50 engines have camshaft s that
cause the engine to have a different firing order.Record the part number stamped on the end of the camshaft for future reference.
Use Lubriplate™ to lubricate each camshaft andall of the camshaft bushings completely.
WARNING
This component weighs greater than 23 kg [50lb]. To prevent serious personal injury, be sureto have assistance or use appropriate liftingequipment to lift this component or assembly.
CAUTION
Do not damage the camshaft bushings when

installing the camshaft . The bushings will fail.
Use camshaft pilot, Part Number 3376280.
Install the two camshaft s.
Turn the camshaft s clockwise andcounterclockwise as you push them in.
Align the timing index marks that were madebefore the camshaft s were removed.
If necessary, rotate the camshaft so that theholes in the camshaft allow access to thecapscrew holes in the thrust plate.
Install the two capscrews and lockplates.
Torque Value: 45 n.m [33 ft-lb]
Use a dial indicator. The clearance must be thesame as measured during camshaft inspection.Measure the clearance.
Camshaft End Clearance
mm in
0.15 MIN 0.006
0.33 MAX 0.013
If the end clearance is not the same as measuredduring the camshaft inspection, check for foreignmaterial or a piece of gasket material between thethrust plate and the block.

Check all of the timing marks again to make surethat they are aligned as shown.
Measure the Front Gear Train Backlash
The adjacent (engaging) gear must not turn asthe gear that is being measured is turned.
Use a dial indicator. Position the indicator on agear as shown. Measure the backlash on all of the gears.
Rotate the gear being measured clockwise.Position the indicator at "0". Rotate the gear counterclockwise. Read the indicator.
Front Gear Train Gear Backlash
mm in
0.07 MIN 0.003
0.51 MAX 0.020
Repeat this procedure for all of the gears exceptthe crankshaft gear.
If the backlash is not within specifications, makesure the adjacent (engaging) gear is not moving
during the measurement.
If the backlash is not within specifications, thegear must be replaced.
The camshaft key provides a means of indexingthe camshaft with the gear.

Offset keys allow the camshaft profile to berotated slightly while the gear train timing remainsthe same.
The more the top of the offset is moved in thedirection of the camshaft normal rotation, themore the injection timing will be retarded. Thepush rod travel numerical value will increase.
The direction of normal rotation of a K38 or K50engine crankshaft is clockwise as viewed fromthe front.
Bend each lockplate to prevent the capscrewsfrom loosening.
Use a hammer and drift. Bend one tab on each
lockplate over the thrust plate. Bend the other tabover the capscrew head.
