Mission Statement

Enrich character and

year around.
1 The Day Camp at N. Warren Presbyterian this sum-mer is an example of CAPNWP’s emerging Vision.

New Vision Takes Shape “CAPNWP provides an environment in which the
Holy Spirit transforms lives through engaging experiences with Christ… Our goal is to become
northwestern PA’s spiritual centers (through) our facilities, programs and surroundings. This ministry will utilize the resources (of) trained staff & volunteers, innovative programming,
comfortable living spaces, Presbytery partnerships … and an openness to spiritual
discernment and movement.” Segments of the CAPNWP Vision Statement, 03/09
On a snowy weekend last January, the CAPNWP Board of Directors gathered with two Executive/General Presbyters and two facilitators to craft a new Vision Statement for the Association and its two sites, Camp Lambec and Westminster Highlands. Armed with the Final Report (12/07) of Run River Enterprises (consultants), the vision-crafting was motivated by many new ideas to implement purpose and direction. The Board also briefly heard how their host site, Pittsburgh Presbytery’s Crestfield Conference Center, was able to successfully grow from a youth camp to year-round minis-tries for adults, families, groups and youth. The page and a half Vision Statement is followed by 150 tasks - some of which are very complex - in order to make CAPNWP outdoor, camp and retreat ministry programs and finances “generationally sustainable.” Each task was assigned to one or more of CAPNWP’s Standing Committees to further prioritize. The Standing Committees are Fund Development, Finance, Church Relations, Program, Human Resources, Marketing and Sites & Facilities.
What’s Happening Now Since last January, the Board and Staff are working on several foci:
~ See Vision, page 2
D ear Friends of “Camp”, For some of us, the word “camp” conjures up powerful memories of
friends, adventure, renewed faith and Christian commitment. But - let’s face it - “camp” does not carry such positive overtones for many because they haven’t had that experience or feel they’re past their time to “go to camp.” Now, think “outdoor ministry.” Think in-spired Christian growth opportunities all year. Think singles, seniors and families as well as youth. Think renewal and service. Think faith formation. Think leadership development. Think partnership with the greater church. “Outdoor ministry” is a common term used by Christian camp & retreat centers in the USA to describe their exciting, year-round ministries. As a matter of fact, financially viable centers do far more business with adults & families from September-June than they do with youth in the summer. This is a central element of the CAPNWP Vision (see page 1). Although we indeed have a long way to go (facilities, programs, church relations, etc.), we trust that God will guide CAPNWP to a blossoming future and that you, faithful “campers,” will respond. Your prayers, involvement and support are encouraged.
In Christ’s Service, Glenn Oswald, Executive Director
Perhaps you’ve seen a new smiling face at Camp Lambec this past spring or summer, fre-quently making repairs or hauling something in a golf cart. That person is Gary Weeks, our new Lambec Site & Facilities Manager. Gary is from nearby West Springfield and has had many jobs in the building trades, most recently that of a contractor. After an extensive search, Gary was select-ed in April from more than 30 applicants. He was given a thorough orientation to the site and position by the former Facilities Manager, “Moe” Mitcho, who retired in late April. Welcome Gary!
Gary Weeks (left) is welcomed by Tom Caves, President of the CAPNWP Board of Directors.
Welcome Gary!
Vision ~ cont. from page 1
Maintain and improve facilities as much as possible with limited available resources. Expand and enhance relations with Presbyteries, congregations and volunteers. Intentionally develop year-round, Christ-centered programs for people of all ages. Initiate new fund development (fund-raising) appeals to churches and individuals.
To these ends, this fall and winter there will be an annual appeal and additional congre-gational visits by CAPNWP representatives.

Did You Know? • CAPNWP provided 23
camperships to deserving children, teens and adults this summer for a total of more than $7,585.00. (See article on the top of page 4.)
• The fees charged at Lambec and Highlands only are about 75% of the actual operating expense for the event. The balance of the expenses comes from donors and Presbytery subsidies.
• Due to lower church donations, annual Presbytery subsidies have decreased in the last several years and are expected to decrease at a faster rate in the years ahead.

Because of You, those without the financial means are able to attend an outdoor ministry experience (camp or retreat) to
grow in God’s grace. Your gifts to a Campership Fund (“scholarships”) make it possible when the need is the most critical in their lives. One of the 23 campership recipients this summer wrote:
