Dear Parents and Campers,

As we leap into summer adventure, the words of one of our most familiar

camp songs seem more relevant to our work today: “Make new friends

but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold.”

In this brochure you will see exciting programs highlighting adventures the

girls will be embarking on this summer. We are fortunate to have Chuck

Iler, such a motivated and dedicated Camp Director who has been

working hard to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible for

our girls. He has listened to their feedback and implemented new and

creative ideas to bring together the aspects of a thoroughly enjoyable and

educational camp experience. He has gone out of his way to ensure

phenomenal camp sessions.

We want the Girl Scout camping experience to be available to every girl. Now more than ever, we are reaching

out to girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to be a part of the camp experience at Sandy Ridge.

It is gratifying how many old friends still contribute their invaluable time, resources and enthusiasm to Girl

Scouts. Without their persevering commitment, we could not continue to bring inspiration and support to girls in

this council. As we approach a new camp season in Girl Scouting, it is immensely satisfying to know that the

reputation and legacy Girl Scouting has built and sustained since 1912 continues to be an attractive path to build

tomorrow’s leaders by providing them leadership skills today.

For some girls, we are taking them to a camp they have never seen before! The surroundings may be new but

the fun and the friends will seem quite familiar. With old friends and new they will encounter opportunities for

growth as individuals, teams and as Girl Scouts.

In the spirit of friendship, both old and new, we invite you to an eagerly awaited 2014 camp season. You are an

integral part of helping Girl Scouts have a unique and memorable outdoor experience. From my heart, I say,

“Thank You” to our old friends and to our new friends I say, “Welcome to Camp!”

So, let us lead the leap; as we move into an exhilarating outdoor adventure! Together, we truly are shaping

tomorrow’s leaders…one girl at a time.

All girls who attend Sandy Ridge will get to experience the same basic activities. Everyone will experience swimming on a daily basis, weather permitting. Arts and crafts, cookouts, campfires, hikes, science and nature activities, singing, and team building activities will be experienced each week. By signing up for a specialized

program girls do all traditional camp activities as well as focus on the themed program.

Camp is a wonderful opportunity for young ladies to learn important life skills while enjoying the fun and excitement camp has to offer. At camp, we work hard to help your camper find out who she is, who she wants to be, and realize she can do anything she sets her mind to! Developing courage, confidence, and character is part of daily life at camp. Your camper will develop the courage to try new things and to achieve a higher goal on activities she’s done in the past. She will strengthen her confidence in knowing that everyone is different and it is okay for her to be herself. Her character will come through when she knows she pushed herself to her limit and tried her hardest. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or concerns. Sandy Ridge, owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, is our

resident camp located in Bennettsville, SC. The camp is on 500 acres of beautiful sand hills and includes two lakes. With a capacity of 72 girls per session, Sandy Ridge is the perfect place to spend summer break. Facilities include a swimming pool, two lakes, watercrafts, an archery range, sports field, a clay pit and an air conditioned dining hall. There are three sleeping units. Two units are air conditioned while one is in a heavily shaded area. This year, we have multiple options for attending summer camp. Girls can attend traditional resident camp, enjoy a camp experience with their family, or opt to

attend with their troop during one of our Troop Adventure Camp sessions (TAC).

Sandy Ridge also utilizes CAMP PEE DEE which is in very close proximity and is where

the equestrian camp and High Ropes course are located.

Who Can Attend?

Sandy Ridge offers camp experiences for all girls in 1st -12th grades. Girls are eligible for programs based on the grade they will be entering in the fall of 2014. We recommend locating your daughter’s grade level in this brochure (pp 10-15) reading through the available programs with her, and then registering early. Many programs will fill up quickly. Please remember you do not have to be a current Girl Scout to register for camp at Sandy Ridge. There is an additional $30 registration fee for girls who are not current Girl Scouts and it pays for their Girl Scout registration through September 2014. Many of our campers’ only Girl Scout experience is at Sandy Ridge each summer, and

they are not involved in a troop for the remaining months of their membership.

Is Your Camper Ready For Camp?

This is a question many parents struggle with when sending their daughter to camp.

Some things to consider are:

How long can you manage without your child?

What is the longest length of time she has been away from home?

How does she deal with being away from home?

Do you usually have to go and pick her up early when she is away from home?

Does she think she can stay at camp for a week?

After considering these questions, talk with your daughter and decide if it is the right time for her. If you need more

information, a checklist and articles can be found at American Camp Association website, www.acacamps.org.

Accreditation

Sandy Ridge is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Accreditation means Sandy Ridge cares enough to undergo a thorough review of its operation – there are more than 250 standards evaluating everything from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth service agencies to ensure current practices

reflect the most up-to-date, research based standards in camp operation

Spring Clean-Up Weekend and Open House

Sandy Ridge will have an open house on Saturday, May 31 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event will give girls and parents a chance to see Sandy Ridge’s facilities, personally meet the Camp Director, ask questions and register for camp if you have not previously. Make a weekend of it and plan to attend Sandy Ridge’s

Spring Clean-Up Weekend May 30 to June 1.

Volunteer Opportunities

Sandy Ridge is for adult Girl Scouts too! We have volunteer positions available at camp this summer. There is potential to volunteer for one session or multiple sessions. Discounts on camp fees are available. Please contact

Camp Living

Campers stay in a shared environment. All campers are expected to participate daily in camp kapers, such as making their beds and maintaining their living spaces. Each camper is responsible for her own personal care and grooming. This provides an excellent opportunity for girls to develop democratic living skills and a greater sense of self-reliance and responsibility. A typical day includes games, songs, program specific activities and other activities the girls plan throughout the week. Campers will sleep in a cabin unit. Counselors will be available

at all times, in a centrally located cabin. Bathrooms are centrally located within the unit.

Staff

Camp staff is a main factor in providing a happy and rewarding experience for your camper. The staff selection process includes a background check, extensive screening and an interview with each staff member. Staff members are selected based on experience, maturity, judgment and a desire to share enthusiasm and skills with children. All staff members participate in an intensive on-site training program prior to camp and ongoing evaluations throughout the summer. The Camp Director is highly trained and is specialized in his field. He has spent all year preparing for the resident camp season. All staff members are dedicated to making resident

camp a positive, wonderful, and memorable experience for your camper.

Lilly says, “I enjoy my friends but I also enjoy working with the younger girls. I would love to become a counselor in

Meals

Three well balanced meals are served each day in the dining hall. The Camp Director will work with parents to accommodate special dietary needs when given advance notice. We ask that specialty food items be provided by the families. These items will be stored in the kitchen. Contact Chuck Iler at [email protected] to discuss special dietary

accommodations.

Health and Safety

The staff members who work with your camper are trained in basic first aid and CPR. A health supervisor is on hand to care for campers with more severe illnesses or injuries. There is also a physician on call for the entire camp season. If your camper becomes ill while at camp, you will be notified in order to determine a course of action. All medications are kept in a locked cabinet in the health center and are dispensed by the health

supervisor.

Health History Form

Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina does not require campers attending summer resident camp to have a physical examination. We do require a Health History Form (completed by parent/guardian) and a current immunization record (or immunization waiver). The Health History Form is included in the camp confirmation packet. If your camper does not have a completed Health History Form and immunization record (or immunization waiver) at Check-In, she will not be able to stay at camp until they are turned in. Please bring the Health History Form with you to Check-In. Do not mail this form to any of the Girl Scout offices or to Sandy Ridge.

Accommodations can be made for girls with special needs.

Every week at Sandy Ridge has a different theme. Girls can bring an outfit and accessories to dress up for the

theme dinner.

Week 1 June 15-20: Minion Mania

Week 2 June 22-27: Hogwarts Camp of Magic

Week 3 July 6-11: Princesses and Knights

Week 4 July 13-18: Superheroes to the Rescue

Week 5 July 20-25: Girl Scouts vs. Zombies

Week 6 July 27-Aug. 1: Duck Commander

Transportation

Transportation to and/or from Sandy Ridge is an option this summer for an additional fee. Bus service will be provided by Durham Bus

Services using air-conditioned buses.

Pick up and drop off of campers will be available at four locations this

summer: Beaufort, North Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Florence.

Beaufort: $40 round trip/$25 one way

North Charleston: $35 round trip/$20 one way

Myrtle Beach: $30 round trip/$20 one way

Florence: $15 round trip/$10 one way

Detailed information about transportation is included in the Camper Handbook, which is included in your camper’s

confirmation materials.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available to supplement the payment of camp fees. Financial Aid is only available to currently registered members of Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina and is awarded based on the need of the girl and availability of funds. The Financial Aid application can be found on our website www.girlscoutsesc.org or by contacting Lesley Robinson at 843-552-9910 ext. 2240 or [email protected]. Campers must be registered for summer resident camp and the $25 non-refundable deposit must be paid before submitting a Financial Aid application. Financial Aid applications must be received in the North Charleston Service Center by

April 18, 2014 for consideration. Financial Aid will be reviewed and awarded on the following criteria:

Completeness of application

Family income

Number of family members

Cost of camp session

Participation in QSP/nut sale activity and/or cookie sale activity

Notification of the awarding of funds will be on or before May 1, 2014. All information will be kept confidential. Each year the amount of funding available is determined by designated donations. Financial Aid is not available

for Troop Adventure Camping or weekend camps.

Early Bird Discount

The early bird gets the worm! Register for summer resident camp between February 3-10, 2014 and pay your $25/$55 non-refundable deposit and receive a 20% discount off of the camp fee. You can pay the remaining

camp fee at a later date. This discount does not apply to Troop Adventure Camp or weekend camps.

Registration

Registration for summer resident camp at Sandy Ridge opens February 3, 2014. A non-refundable deposit of $25 for Girl Scouts and $55 for Non-Girl Scouts is required when your camper registers for camp. This money

goes towards the camp fee.

Sandy Ridge will be using Active Network as our on-line summer resident camp registration system. To register for camp, please visit www.girlscoutsesc.org and click on the online registration button. This will take you directly to Active Network and there you can begin the registration process. All summer resident camp registrations must be completed on-line. Confirmation Packet

Immediately after your camper registers for summer resident camp using the Active Network on-line registration system, a confirmation packet will be e-mailed to the e-mail address supplied when setting up the Active Network account. Please make sure your e-mail is set up to accept e-mails from Active Network. The confirmation packet is important. It includes all necessary forms, Check-In and Check-Out procedures, a packing list, and additional important information. Please follow the directions in the packet concerning what forms to mail in and what to bring with you to Check-In. If you do not receive a confirmation packet

within three days of registration, please contact Chuck Iler at [email protected].

Cancellation and Refunds

Should we have a lack of registrations, a session may be canceled. Camp sessions are held regardless of weather. If a camper cancels, refunds, less the $25/$55 deposit, will be made only if written cancellation is received 30 days prior to the beginning of the session. There are no refunds for early departure, whether for

personal reasons or a natural disaster.

Minion Madness

June 15 – 20

Girls entering 2nd-3rd grades

Try everything at camp you possibly can; campfires, cookouts, hiking, crafts, and swimming are included in this fun-filled week as you explore Sandy Ridge. Girls will also enjoy planning a Despicable Me slumber party for the entire camp.

Monkey Business

June 22 - 27




Girls will enjoy eating a jungle breakfast, playing water games, and making a banana boat over the campfire during this experience. They will have the opportunity to hang out all over Sandy Ridge, including visiting the craft area, hiking the trails and visiting the clay pit.

Horse Lover

July 6 -11




Girls will spend time at the Camp Pee Dee corral learning about barn safety and horse safety. They will learn about what horses eat and about the tack and different parts of a horse. At the end of the week girls will participate in a led horse ride. This camp is perfect for girls who want a first

time horse experience.

The sky is the limit during this camp. Girls will make new friends while cooking over the fire, learn new games and songs, swim in the pool, make arts and crafts, and try different types of

boats.

Let’s Go Crazy, Crazy, Crazy

Girls will make new friends as they spend the week at overnight camp! Create a masterpiece in arts and crafts, splash in the water at the pool and in the lake, cook over the campfire, paddle in a canoe, play lots of fun games, and have the best week of your life!

Horse Rider (Level 1)

Girls entering 4th-5th grades



This camp is perfect for the first time horse rider. Girls will spend time at Camp Pee Dee’s corral, learning about the parts of the horse, how to tack-up and groom a horse, riding and much more!

Dance Fever

June 22 - 27




Do you hear that beat? It’s time to move your feet! Girls will learn several types of dancing, including basic ballet, hip hop, and line dancing. When girls are not practicing their moves they will have time to swim, make crafts and enjoy nature.

Water World

June 22 - 27




This camp is perfect for the girl who loves spending time in the water. Daily visits to the pool and the lake will include games, a smorgasbord of lake activities, including canoeing, sailing, paddle boarding and a pack-out lunch in canoes. Girls will also work together to build their own rafts and race them.

Dance Party Princesses

July 13 – 18




Enjoy a week of make-overs, dress up, and tea parties Sandy Ridge style. Girls will stay up late during their slumber party to raid the kitchen. They will also plan and host an all camp dance party.

Horse Riders (Level 2)

Take your horse knowledge to the next level. This camp offers the opportunity to learn more about the horses at Camp Pee Dee, including horse health. Girls will learn about the different types of riding styles and will hone their riding skills. You must have completed a Horse Rider Level 1 camp either in 2013 or earlier in 2014 to attend.

Want to bend some of those camp rules? Do some things you have always been told not to! Have a movie night, stay up late, sing karaoke, raid the kitchen, sleep in, eat junk food and order pizza for cookout night!

Craftastic

July 6 -11




Go crazy and craft all week long! There will be time to paint, draw, make jewelry and clay sculptures, lanyards, and so much more. When girls are not crafting they will spend time swimming, at the archery range and zip-lining into the lake.

Dr. Doolittle’s Interns

July 20 - 25




This camp is perfect for the animal lover. Girls will learn about and take care of camp’s critters that live in the Science and Nature Center. They will also explore Sandy Ridge and learn about the camp’s wildlife. A trip to a local veterinarian will round out this week.

Spa Days





Do you like to pamper yourself with all-natural facials, nail painting parties, yoga and smoothies? If so, this is the program for you! Girls will also learn how to fit exercise and eating right into their daily life.

River Adventures

July 6 -11




Adventure awaits the girls who come to this camp. Spend a day at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte racing the rapids and climbing to new heights. Girls will challenge themselves at Camp Pee Dee’s high ropes course. Of course there will also be time for swimming, zip-lining and enjoying all that Sandy Ridge has to offer.

Camp Commander





Learn to camo up, jack!! During this adventure, girls will learn basic wilderness first aid and survival skills. They will “hunt” wildlife during a photo scavenger hunt and have a fashion show where camo owns the runway. Time will also be spent teambuilding and at the Camp Pee Dee high ropes course.

Top Chef: Sandy Ridge

Who’s hungry? Girls will spend the week perfecting their skills as a chef whipping up snacks, main courses, and desserts. Highlights include learning a variety of indoor and outdoor cooking methods and challenging each other to a cook-off!

The Voice

June 15 - 20




Do you like to sing, dance and perform? During this camp, girls will express themselves through movement and song. They will show off their skills to family and fellow campers at the end of the week showcase. Girls will also plan and host a dance party for the entire camp.

Cowgirls (Level 1)

June 22 - 27




This camp is perfect for the first time horse rider. Girls will spend time at Camp Pee Dee’s corral learning about the parts of the horse, how to groom and tack-up a horse, riding and much more!

Defying Gravity

June 22 - 27




Defy gravity in the water and in the air. Spend a day at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte racing the rapids and climbing to new heights. Girls will challenge themselves at Camp Pee Dee’s high ropes course. There will also be time for swimming, zip-lining into the lake and enjoying all that Sandy Ridge has to offer.

Ghost Hunters

July 6 -11




Are you a fan of the paranormal? Spend the week hanging out with local ghost hunters, preparing a haunted hayride, and visiting a local historic site to hunt for ghosts. Girls will also have time to visit the lake, swim in the pool, shoot a bow and make crafts.

Readers and Writers

July 6 -11




Enjoy the week lounging by the pool and lake reading your favorite book. Girls will have the opportunity to share their favorite books with their fellow campers. A trip to the local library and the local newspaper will round out this week.

Gross-o-logy

July 13 – 18




Explore the “gross” side of science, including making slime and dissecting owl pellets. Girls will spend time learning about the bugs that call Sandy Ridge home and snorkel in the lake and see what’s living in there.

Center Stage

July 13 – 18




This drama-packed week makes you a star at Sandy Ridge! Write the lines, design the costumes, make the props, and star in your own production! Girls will perform their play for the entire camp at the end of the session.

Game On

July 20 - 25




Do you have what it takes to survive a horde of happy zombies? Work as a team to learn wilderness survival skills, pitch a tent and sleep under the stars, make campfires, and find your way through the woods with a compass. Try archery and spend time on the high ropes course at Camp Pee Dee.

Cowgirls (Level 2)

July 20 - 25




Take your horse knowledge to the next level. This camp offers the opportunity to learn more about the horses at Camp Pee Dee, including horse health. Girls will learn about the different types of riding styles and will hone their riding skills. You must have completed a Cowgirls Level 1 camp either in 2013 or earlier in 2014 to attend.

Are you ready for adventure? If your answer is yes this is the camp for you. Spend a day at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte racing the rapids and climbing to new heights. Girls will also challenge themselves at Camp Pee Dee’s high ropes course. Of course there will also be time for swimming, zip-lining into the lake and enjoying all that Sandy Ridge has to offer.

This camp is perfect for the first time horse rider. Girls will spend time at Camp Pee Dee’s corral, learning about the parts of the horse, how to groom, tack up and ride a horse plus much more!

CIT 1 (Counselor-In-Training 1)

Walk in the steps of your favorite counselor and start your camp leadership journey by becoming a CIT 1! Girls will spend the week at camp learning about programming, outdoor skills, safety, age and social characteristics, first aid, songs, games and much more. CIT 1’s will shadow various staff members throughout the week and learn the challenges and rewards of working with and leading younger girls.

Girls will spend the week enjoying Sandy Ridge’s lake while they go down the waterslides, zip-line into the lake, and spend time exploring on a paddleboard. Girls will also visit Camp Pee Dee and challenge themselves on the high ropes course.

Ride and Slide





Girls will travel to Carowinds to enjoy roller coasters one day and Boomerang Bay Water Park the next. They will also have time to experience activities at Sandy Ridge and will go to Camp Pee Dee to spend time on the high ropes course.

CIT 2 (Counselor-In-Training 2)

CIT 2’s will shadow and work with our camp staff all summer long! They will start by attending pre-camp staff training on June 6 – 13, which will help in preparation for a successful summer in mentoring campers. Not only will girls shadow the Counselors and Unit Leaders, but as CIT 2’s you will shadow Lifeguards, the Arts & Craft Specialist, a Naturalist, the Waterfront Director, the Program Director, Assistant Camp Director and the Camp Director. CIT 2’s will see and learn what it takes to lead and inspire the camp staff!

Dad & Me Weekend

June 20 – 22

$55 per person

Sandy Ridge is the perfect place for some father-daughter bonding. Spend the weekend trying everything camp has to offer including: canoeing, swimming, hiking, archery, zip-lining into the lake, and even building a rocket and launching it! Horseback riding is available for an additional $20 per person for ages 10 and older.

Mom & Me Weekend

June 27 – 29

$55 per person

Spend the weekend trying everything Sandy Ridge has to offer including: hiking, arts and crafts, archery and zip-lining. Horseback riding is available for an additional $20 per person for ages 10 and older. This is perfect time for some mother-daughter bonding time.

Family Camp Weekend

July 11-13

$55 per person

Children under 6 are $20 per person; activities will be limited

Spend the weekend at Sandy Ridge with some of your favorite people – your family! There will be time for swimming, canoeing, hiking, crafts, singing, zip-lining into the lake, family team-building, and so much more. Horseback riding is available for an additional $20 per person for ages 10 and older.

Troop Adventure Camp (TAC)

Troop Adventure Camp allows troops to plan their own camp experience with the help of their staff hostesses.

They can create an experience just right for them.

Archery (for girls entering 4th grade and older)

Troop Adventure Camp Dates

Troop Adventure Camp runs from Friday evening to Sunday morning. Four meals are included.

Troop Adventure Camp Fees

$55 per girl

$55 per additional adult after Safety Activity Checkpoints ratio is fulfilled

ADULT REQUIREMENTS: There MUST be a minimum of two adults in attendance with every troop at TAC. These required adults attend without paying a fee. Any adult attending who is not required to fulfill Safety Activity Checkpoint ratios must pay the full cost. The priority is to accommodate as many girls as possible. Please limit

adults to the required ratios.

Troop leaders must provide supervision of girls in the following ratios:

Two adults for every 6 girls Kindergarten and 1st grade

Two adults for every 12 girls entering 2nd and 3rd grade

Two adults for every 16 girls entering 4th and 5th grade

Two adults for every 20 girls entering 6th grade and above

To meet Safety Activity Checkpoints ratios, an “adult” must be an individual older than 18 years of age.

Adults may not bring “tag-a-longs” (adult leader’s younger children).

Attendees must be registered Girl Scouts attending camp with their troop or group.
