Over the years, camp has adapted to the changing realities of a changing world: adding and dropping programs, improving and demolishing facilities, and planting and cutting down trees (only as necessary). We make changes as needed, and over time we grow stronger. I like to keep you informed of the changes, for you represent the heart of our community. Your love and appreciation of camp is truly “the wind beneath our wings,” and we appreciate your support more than you will ever know. We are always assessing our policies in an effort to run a better camp. In recent years we have noticed an increase in the number of visitors. It was not optimal to the camper experience, but traditions do not go away easily at Greystone! However, as a result of the murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last December, we have decided that we need to increase security measures at Greystone when camp is in session. The large numbers of visitors who come to camp for special events or on weekends present a very real security challenge. It would be possible for an outsider with the wrong intent to slip in and cause harm. In an effort to avoid this possibility, beginning with the 2013 sessions, we will no longer allow visitors while camp is in session. This most affects our current campers’ families, but it also will impact alumnae plans during the summer. Most camps restrict visitors with policies similar to this, but it took an upgraded standard on security for us to finally make this change. We do not want this policy to make us appear ungracious or make you feel unwelcome at camp. We appreciate your love of camp and will always consider you to be a part of our camp family. We know that some of you plan to meet friends at Greystone for a day each summer. In past years, we have loved having you visit for events such as our spectacular 4th of July fireworks or for Sunday church services. We are sad that the tradition of alumnae visiting the campus while camp is in session will change and invite you to help establish new traditions of visiting us. We are open 12 months a year, and a visit to camp when the campers are not here will grant you full access to all your favorite spots without restriction. We still give tours for visitors (including alumnae) when the campers are here; simply call the office and set up a tour date. We also have a wonderful Alumnae weekend in September. Come back to camp and experience the whole thing over again (even living in a cabin with your pals). This weekend has a cost, but the checks are written to the Great Day Fund thus making camp a possibility for girls who cannot otherwise afford the experience and giving you a tax deduction. We always want you to consider Greystone to be your second home and will always be delighted to welcome you when you come. Camp looks amazing. At the Waterpark we built a new dock for launching our fleet of stand up paddle boards. Between this new dock and the Blob dock we replaced the sand beach with a 12-foot patio that is a wonderful place for a picnic. We are also renovating the Pavilion’s rails (new wood), the Landsports Hut, and the Candy Shoppe, along with making some upgrades to the bathrooms in all cabins. Thank you for your support and for your care about this camp in “Ole Tuxedo.” We deeply appreciate your interest and your prayers. “His Faithfulness Continues Through All Generations” (Psalm 100:5) From The Directors

This summer will mark our 94th summer at Camp Greystone. From Katie Miller Grant When my husband, Greg, and I moved back to camp in August 2011, it was so wonderful to be able to be back with family and friends! Junior Camp continues to be the area of camp that I enjoy so much, and with the strong alumnae staff representation at that session, it made sense to become a bit more involved throughout the summer with the alumnae and the Great Day Fund. This past summer, at the start of each session, we had an alumnae table set up to “welcome back” our alumnae as they brought the next generation to camp! We gave out great favors and had the most wonderful time taking “Greystone Granddaughter” pictures and making the connection of current campers with our former campers. We even had several campers who had their mothers and grandmothers with them for opening day....it was very special. We invite any of you who are at Greystone on opening day to stop by the alumnae table for a visit! The Great Day Fund, which has grown enough to allow for our first campership for the summer of 2013, continues to grow at a steady pace thanks to many of our amazing alumnae....Thank YOU so much for your contributions and support of Greystone for future generations!

From The Editor My happiest days in 2012 were all tied to Greystone. In March, I reconnected with many 1970s friends on my drive to Orlando to see my cousin, Virginia Waldrop (2000s), play softball for Yale. In September, it was incredibly fun to see other 1970s friends when we met in Tennessee. Most meaningful of all was my visit in August to Corrie ten Boom’s home in Haarlem, The Netherlands, where she and her family hid Jews from the Germans from 1942 – 1944 until they were betrayed and imprisoned, resulting in the death of her father, sister, brother, and nephew. My 30-minute train ride from Amsterdam to Haarlem was a personal pilgrimage in appreciation for what Corrie’s teaching has meant to me.

Born in 1892, Corrie was the daughter of a Dutch watchmaker and in 1924 became the first female licensed watchmaker in her country. After World War II ended, she set up several homes for displaced persons in The Netherlands and Germany and spoke around the world about her Christian faith and forgiveness, on one occasion encountering a German guard from her prison years whose hand she shook in forgiveness only through God’s grace. The Hiding Place, the story of her wartime experiences, was published in 1971, and the movie by the same name was released in 1975. In 1977, she settled in California and, for health seasons, ceased travelling. She died on April 15, 1983 (her 91st birthday), five years after suffering a major stroke. I met Corrie in July 1973, my “age 18 skip summer,” when I visited Greystone for a weekend. At Mrs. Hanna’s invitation, Corrie came to Greystone for two weeks after speaking at a Billy Graham Crusade in Atlanta. Aged 81, she was becoming frail and lived with her assistant, Ellen de Kroon, in the guest log cabin by Libby and Jim Miller’s home. Corrie found the dining hall noise overwhelming, so she ate meals at the log cabin. But when Corrie spoke at morning assembly, Bible classes, and at the Sunday church service, her energy revived. As she told simple stories using props such as a flashlight, she radiated joy and trust in Jesus. She told stories of her imprisonment in Ravensbruck, a German concentration camp, and her sure knowledge that God was with her and her sister, Betsie, in that evil place. My close friend, counselor Nancy Jackson Davis (1960s-70s), arranged for me to visit with Corrie for fifteen minutes. What a privilege!

Corrie ten Boom

Why has Corrie’s story resonated with me for forty years? Until World War II, she led an ordinary life. She lived in a family of modest financial means but an abundance of love. She was an average student. She was at times irritated by her aunts who lived with her family. She was heartbroken when the young man she hoped to marry chose another girl. In those pre-war years, her life was ordinary, but faithful. She made many small decisions of obedience and gave to others in many small ways, such as leading Bible studies for mentally challenged children. When her time of testing came during World War II, she was ready. When I think of Corrie, I am reminded that my “ordinary” life can make a difference if I am faithful to God’s calling. The second reason that Corrie’s teaching has impacted me is that it was to the point, understandable, and spoken with conviction, courage, and kindness. When I am anxious about the future, I remember Corrie’s recalling her fear as a child that her father would die. Her father reassured her that even as he always gave her the train ticket just before they boarded the train, God would give her the strength she needed at the right time, not before or after. When I am inclined to hold a grudge, I remember that Corrie chose to forgive the German guards who treated her cruelly and the Dutch who betrayed her family to the Germans. When things happen in my life that don’t make sense, I remember her embroidery story as told in her book, Tramp For The Lord: “Looking back across the years of my life, I can see the working of a divine pattern which is the way of God with His children…Faith is like radar which sees through the fog – the reality of things at a distance that the human eye cannot see…Although the threads of my life have often seemed knotted, I know, by faith, that on the other side of the embroidery there is a crown.” In August 2012 at the ten Boom home, I saw Corrie’s embroidery of a crown, with its underside of jumbled threads and knots and its topside of a beautiful crown. I saw the closet-like “hiding place” where four Jews and two Resistance members were successfully hidden when the Germans raided the ten Boom home. I rejoiced that God blessed Greystone, and its campers and counselors, by sending Corrie to Greystone in 1973.

Third Annual Great Day 5K Race Reunion Weekend

On September 28-30, 2012, approximately 70 alumnae gathered at Greystone for the third annual Great Day 5K Race weekend. The reunion began with Katie Miller Grant hosting a reception on the dining hall porch. At flag lowering, attendees remembered the importance JimDaddy placed on honoring the flag. Following a traditional “opening day” spaghetti dinner, everyone gathered in White Hall to visit with friends, view digitized photos from the archives, and make crosses from the old pine trees that lined the camp’s main road for nearly 90 years.

March 2013 Other Reunion Activities

After the race, alumnae enjoyed playing ring tennis, conquering the ropes course, shooting riflery, participating in Kelly Carew’s “Greystone Groove” class, and hearing Dana Cunningham play her piano compositions at Margaret and Jimboy’s home. Saturday night’s activities began with Libby Miller and Laura Hollowell hosting a banquet complete with singing “Hail, Greystone, Hail,” “Libby’s Song,” the “Felix the Cat” clap, Greystone songs, toasts, and awards for top achievers in the 5K race and riflery. The evening’s talent show included many hilarious skits. After a church service on Sunday morning, everyone left for home but promised to be back next year (September 27-29, 2013; for more information, contact Laura Hollowell at [email protected]). Many thanks to Laura for playing a key role in providing information and photos for this article!

Virginia Barkley Publishes #1 Best- Selling Book About ClutterBusting

Greystone celebrates with alumna Virginia Barkley the January 2013 publication of her book, ClutterBusting for Busy Women: How To Create a C.A.L.M. Life To Have More Time & Energy, which is available through Amazon. Virginia’s family has had close ties to Greystone since the 1950s, when Virginia’s mother, Constance Carriere Barkley, became a camper friend of Libby Miller. In the 1970s-early 1980s, Virginia and her older sisters, Charlotte Barkley Mercer and Constance Barkley-Lewis, were campers and counselors. Virginia’s niece, Annie Dorman Mercer, was a 2000s camper. After graduating from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1986, Virginia organized people and projects in the film and television industry in Los Angeles. The 1996 Olympics brought her to Atlanta, where she organized over 12,000 participants in the Athlete’s March. In 1997, she joined The Coca-Cola Company, where she was working when its longtime CEO, Roberto Goizueta, died. At church on the following Sunday, the minister said that many people had approached him and asked how much Mr. Goizueta had left behind. His answer was simple and profound: “He left it all.” Great food for thought when clutterbusting our homes!” In 2006, Virginia founded a professional organizing company named Let's Get It Straight LLC in her home city of New Orleans. Virginia believes that clutter creates a domino effect in our lives causing exhaustion and distraction, which then sap our confidence and prevent us from attaining our dreams. She focuses on the psychology of why we hold onto things that no longer have a purpose in our lives and offers solutions for letting go. Less clutter produces greater CALM, generating more time and energy to focus on priorities. Virginia has been interviewed on ABC, CBS, British Broadcasting Corporation's Global Radio (BBC), Syndicated Radio Broadcasts, and for several printed publications. In February 2013, Virginia shared her thoughts: Question: What is the main goal of your book? Answer: Delighting in and cultivating one's presence in the now, embracing the fullness of every day no matter what we're doing, living in communion with people rather than things is what I hope this book will help women achieve by removing clutter from their lives. Everyone deserves peace. Question: Do you view dealing with clutter as a separate task from maintaining a clean house? Answer: Absolutely. ClutterBusting is the pre-requisite for organizing our homes to function as our ally versus being an albatross. A home can be both clean and disorganized. Just as dams are built when beavers stop the flow of water, clutter accumulates when items stop moving and literally start bumping into each other. When our eyes are bombarded with paper piles

and mess mounds, we are more likely to get off track and feel ungrounded for the rest of the day. Question: As a Greystone camper, were you enthusiastic about cleaning for inspection? Answer: What was fun about inspection was that it was a TEAM effort and if we all pitched in, not only did we have more fun but we had a better chance of succeeding. I came up with a HELP acronym for families which stands for Have Everyone Learn To Pitch In. Can you imagine what the cabins would end up looking like if we didn't take care of our “home away from home”? The great thing about cleaning for inspection is that while it may have initially felt like work in the morning, we were all able to come back to our nest at the end of the day and relax in a clean and calm environment. Question: In the years since Greystone, did your outlook on clutter change in a big way? Answer: One of my quotes in the book is: “If we care ABOUT our things, we must learn to care FOR them; as we care for them, we care for ourselves.” Clutter creates unnecessary distraction in our lives, wasting precious time and energy that could be invested more productively toward more fulfilling pursuits for ourselves as well as others. Question: What difference has Greystone made in your life? Answer: My faith is the cornerstone of my life, and the foundation of that faith was seeded in the years that I spent at Greystone. When times get tough, I can close my eyes and still smell the pine trees, hear “Taps,” and find comfort knowing that all is as God intends if we put our trust in Him. Jesus did not say that it would always be easy, but that our strength to sustain adversity is ten-fold when we walk with Him. Thoughts of Greystone, the friends, the memories, the love and support of the Millers, the staff, and my counselors remind me always that God provides us pieces of heaven on earth until we are reunited with Him.

Remembering Nancy Hager Rand (1930-2012)

On March 26, 2012, Greystone lost one of its most faithful alumnae when Nancy Hager Rand died in Durham. Greystone sends much love to Nancy’s husband, Kenan, and the entire Rand family. As a camper from 1940 until 1946, Nancy excelled in many sports, earning Seahorse in swimming, Expert in riflery, Blade in canoeing, and membership in the Bridlespurs riding club. In 1946, she served as Even captain. One of her vivid memories was of standing in line on Greystone’s main road before the closing banquet in August 1945 when the announcement was made that the Japanese had surrendered to end World War II. As close friends of Libby and Jim Miller, Nancy and her husband, Kenan, remained close to Greystone for their entire adult lives. During the 1960s-early 1970s, Nancy represented Greystone in Durham, when their daughters, Ruthie Rand Waldrop and Ginny Rand Bowman, attended Greystone for many summers. Five of their granddaughters, Nancy and Virginia Waldrop and Rachel, Rebecca, and Ruthie Rand, were Greystone campers in the 1990s-2000s. 21 Rand family members from three generations attended Greystone’s family camp in 1998. Nancy and Kenan’s younger son, Hager Rand, was a “charter” camper and a counselor at Falling Creek Camp, and Hager’s sons, Alex and Campbell, also attended Falling Creek. After college, Jimboy Miller managed the Rands’ Nutbush Farms in Henderson, North Carolina for a year.

Nancy’s many civic contributions included serving as a member of the trustees of the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science and Wachovia Bank of Durham. In 1985, the Durham Chamber of Commerce awarded Nancy its Civic Honor Award, and she was named one of Purdue University’s Outstanding Alumni. Nancy was appointed by the Governor of North Carolina to that state’s Department of Transportation Board. Nancy served Kappa Alpha Theta chapters at Duke and the University of North Carolina as an area alumna. She and Kenan were avid fans of UNC sports.

Nancy loved Greystone dearly and faithfully attended alumnae reunions in 1994, 1999, and even 2004 (when Hurricane Ivan knocked out electricity in Tuxedo). Greystone shaped her life in many ways and formed a bond within her family. In remembering her mother, Ruthie Rand Waldrop said, “She loved and appreciated every moment she spent at Greystone, how its ideals shaped her life, and the lifelong friends she made. She had a great sense of humor and was a real good sport!” Ginny Rand Bowman said, “Our mother believed actions speak louder than words. She was always doing something unselfish for a family member, a friend, or the community. Her greatest gift to Ruthie and me was allowing us to go to camp for so many summers when were young. I think our gift to her was loving Greystone as much as she did.”

In June 2012, Libby Miller said this of Nancy: “I admired her when she was an older camper. She rode horses beautifully. We’ve loved the Rand family for many years and stayed with them when we showed the Greystone movies in Durham. Nancy was very capable, had a huge amount of energy, and was very gracious. She was one of Greystone’s most loyal alumnae.” Nancy Hager Rand’s years at Greystone and adult life exemplify what was best about Greystone during the 1940s, one of the camp’s finest decades. The following song from the 1942 Green and Gold expresses Nancy’s life well:

“Faithful forever, to Greystone we’ll be, Helping each other in love and loyalty;

Always remembering the friendships we’ve made, Never allowing our memories to fade.”

Announcements

Accessing Greystone’s Website

Greystone’s Website address is: www.campgreystone.com. The website includes features such as an interactive map of the campus, links to the Greystone iPhone and iPad “app,” information about The Great Day Fund, photos from the archives, and fabulous audios of Greystone songs. Additionally, if you log in using your email and password, during camp sessions you may view photos of campers and read Jimboy Miller’s daily postings. If Greystone does not have your current email or street address, please go to the Alumnae section of the website and follow the “Update us” link to keep us current on your information. If you are new to the website, click on “Create An Account” under the log in screen.

Alumnae Mailing List If you hear of someone who did not receive this Sparks and wishes to stay in touch with Greystone, please ask her to contact Greystone.

The Greystone Wait List

Greystone’s reenrollment rate of over 85% has led to a long wait list for almost every session and few spaces available for new campers. Every camper is placed on the wait list according to the date her application is received. Places are awarded according to grades having spaces available. If you are looking at Greystone, it is essential for you to complete an online application as early as possible. You might have a year’s wait before a place opens, but your deposit is always fully refundable, so there is no risk in saving a place. You may download an application from our Website (www.campgreystone.com) or call the camp office and we will send a packet.
