Discipline Policy

Camp Cross and its staff make every effort to work with campers to resolve any behavior or conflicts during their time with us. In many instances the behavior is easily resolved and all involved can move forward with the session. In the event of be- havior or conflict issues that may include bullying, failure to be on time for activities, or inappropriate language, staff will take the following steps:

Discussion with Staff about behavior. Discussion with Program Director about

behavior. Discussion with Associate Director about

behavior with a phone call made to the camper’s parents/guardians.

Removal from the Camp Cross community.

In some instances the pattern of behavior does not correct itself or may be deemed detrimental to the community. This can result in dismissal from Camp Cross and it will be the camper’s parents/guard- ians responsibility to immediately pick up their camper. Instances that would warrant immediate removal from the camp community are:

Unauthorized consumption of alcohol or illegal use of drugs while at Camp Cross. Unauthorized use of tobacco products while at Camp Cross. Any intentional destruction or defacement of Camp Cross property. Any proven incident of racism, sexism or sexual harassment. Theft of Camp Cross property or the property of other campers, volunteers or staff. Any intentional physical or emotional harm toward any other person at Camp Cross.

ACA Accredited

Camp Cross is an ACA accredited camp. Accreditation means that Camp Cross adheres to the highest standards of health & safety for camping programs as outlined by camping industry professionals. We are evaluated every three years to maintain compliance with ACA standards, and our accreditation assures you that your campers’ experiences are in line with the quality program standards you desire.

What to Bring to Camp

In preparation for your camp session here is a suggested list of what to pack. Below the list are items not allowable on the campground.

Please note that there is no food (this includes gum and mints) or drink (water is the excep- tion) allowed in cabins. Snacks are available throughout the day and can be found in the Dining Hall. If you would like to bring snacks for the duration of your stay, the staff will keep them in a safe location in the kitchen and give them to you at appropriate times. Personal equipment such as sports equipment and musical instruments are allowed as optional items. However, it is recommended that these be stored in a safe, secure location during the session. Sharing and use of these personal items is up to the camper’s discretion, but Camp Cross is not responsible for any items that are lost, stolen or damaged.

WHAT TO BRING • Sleeping Bag and Pillow • Towels • Toiletries • Casual Clothes • Warmer Clothes (for cool evenings) • Closed Toed Shoes • Swim Suit • Flashlight and Extra Batteries • Sunscreen • Bug Spray • Bag for Wet Clothes/ Towels

OPTIONAL ITEMS • Hiking Boots • Extra Blanket • Camera (cell phone cameras not allowed) • Small Amount of Money for Camp Cross Canteen • Bible/ Prayer Book • Stationary, Stamps, Pencil/ Pen • Alarm Clock • Musical instrument

WHAT NOT TO BRING TO CAMP • Fireworks • Firearms or any type of weapon • Illegal drugs including alcohol • PERSONAL ELECTRONICS (cell phones, Ipods, Laptops, etc.) Such items distract

Camperships

At Camp Cross, campers will never be turned away due to financial needs. Our local diocesan congregations typically handle camperships. If you are in need of financial as- sistance for a camp session please contact your local Episcopal congregation to see if they have campership funds available. You may look for your local congregation at http://www. spokanediocese.org/congregations.

If your local congregation is unable to assist with your campership needs, please contact us. We will work to put you in contact with a congregation that may help.

Check-in Procedures

Check-ins for all youth sessions at Camp Cross begin at 2:30pm at: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church 501 E Wallace Ave. Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814

Camp Cross staff will arrive at St. Luke’s between 1:30-2:00pm. Pleases allow the staff time to properly set up before lining up to check-in. Registration check-in is set up in the Great Hall area of St. Luke’s. Camp Cross staff will be present to direct registrants to the Great Hall where more staff will be set up. We ask that all campers bring their luggage in to St. Luke’s with them and place it against the West (left) wall before entering the registration line.

Campers should remain with their parent/guardian until registration is complete, at which point supervision of campers will become the responsibility of Camp Cross staff, and we ask that parents/guardians respect and follow the policies of Camp Cross.

The check-in process consists of a registration review and a medical check. Please note that the following check-in procedures will also be conducted for all campers traveling by bus:

During the review, staff will ensure that all required paperwork is completed and up to date for the registered camper. Blank forms will be on hand to fill out in the event of any missing paperwork. For this reason, we ask that a parent or legal guardian over the age of 18 be pres- ent with the camper at registration.

Campers will have a medical check once their registration check-in is complete. During the medical check, staff will observe and question the camper and parent/guardian for any signs of recent illnesses or exposure to illness. Staff will also check for any updates to the camper’s medical history and medications, as well a check for head lice. Camper medications must be turned in at this time. To ease the process we ask that all medications be turned over in a zip-lock bag with a list of the medications and description of scheduled administration. The medical staff will then determine if the camper is in fit health to attend the camp session.

Once the registrar and medical staff clear the camper, they will join the rest of the checked- in campers for games at the back of the Great Hall before boarding the bus to Camp Cross when all registered campers have arrived.

Cabin Assignments

We often receive requests before or at the start of a camp session for shar- ing cabins. Our cabins hold up to four people, and a shared cabin can often be a great opportunity to meet new people at camp. For this reason, campers are only allowed to request one other cabin-mate during a session. Camp staff will then assign cabin space to maximize the sleeping capacity during the session.

Sending Mail

Our mail is delivered by boat. To make sure packages get to Camp on time we suggest mail- ing them a couple days before a camper’s session begins. Due to our mail delivery method we recommend all package be shipped using USPS. If you are sending food or snacks, your camper will need to turn those over to the kitchen staff for safe keeping as food is not al- lowed in the cabins. Campers will be able to access their snacks during the day.

Mail will be passed out to campers each day. The mailing address is:

[Camper’s Name] c/o Camp Cross 42353 W. Coeur d’Alene Lake SHR Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814

Getting to get to Camp Cross Traveling by van or bus? Camp Cross offers extended transportation services for all youth sessions for an additional fee. Camp Cross staff members will meet campers and their parent/guardians at one of our four stops in the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane and conduct check in procedures at the pick-up sites. Just like check in at St. Luke’s in Coeur d’Alene, all paperwork must be completed before the camper may board the bus or van. The following is a list of things to know about traveling by bus or van: Pick up & Drop off schedule:

At the pick up or drop off: All pick up and drop off sites are centrally located in the parking lots of the above locations. We ask that parents/guardians dropping off their campers remain in their cars until the bus or van has arrived to help expedite the check in and drop off process. Camp staff will then designate an appropriate spot to perform check in procedures, which include a medical check and ensuring all paperwork is properly completed. After the check in process is complete, staff will assist the camper loading their luggage and boarding onto the vehicle and vice versa at drop off. The parent/guardian will be asked to initial next to the camper’s name on the check in roster and again at the drop off before the camper is released (please note that the person picking up the camper must be on the approved list). Custody of care for the camper is transferred

upon the initialing of the roster, to Camp Cross at check in and back to the parent/guardian at drop off. Safety & Travel: All passengers on the van or bus are asked to abide by the safety rules defined as:

v All persons are to remain in their seats at any time the vehicle is running unless they are using a restroom on a chartered bus.

v Seatbelts/ safety harnessed are to be worn properly at all times when available. This means the straps are covering the passengers appropriately and buckled in.

Passengers should

not attempt to access their luggage unless the vehicle is stopped and permission given by the staff supervisor. v Passengers should be loaded within the safe limits of the vehicle. One person per seat and seatbelt. v Trash is to be placed in the trash receptacle and cleaned up at the end of each trip. v First Aid kit is located underneath the front passenger seat in case of emergency.

Conversely, Camp Cross staff will be sure to notify you if the van or bus is delayed. In the event of an emergency during travel, the Executive Director or Associate Director will contact the listed emergency contact for the camper immediately.

Health Care Policy

A designated health care provider (HCP) attends each Camp Cross session. The HCP is responsible for administering medications on schedule and medical care as needed. All prescription medications are stored and locked in the Infirmary with accessibility limited to the HCP, Associate Director or Executive Director.

Typical medical care at Camp Cross is for cuts, scrapes, allergies, exhaustion, and symp- toms related to homesickness, which are easily treatable and will be noted in case of a pattern that could indicate something more serious.

In the event that greater medical care is needed such as illness, major injury, or a consis- tent pattern of homesickness, a phone call will be placed to the parent/guardian/emer- gency contact explaining the circumstances. This phone call is meant to keep the parent/ guardian informed of their camper’s wellbeing and to allow possible arrangements for greater care for the camper that could include removal from the camp population.

All medical care, including medication administration, is logged and noted in case fur- ther follow up is needed.

Emergency Information

Though we take every opportunity to create a safe and healthy environment for campers, emergencies still have the possibility of happening. Camp Cross has procedures for potential emergency needs, including evacuation procedures should it be deemed necessary.

Emergency needs can be related to health, a missing camper, major injury, an intruder at Camp Cross, or a natural disaster.

In the case of any of these events the camp Associate Director or Executive Director will notify parents/guardians as soon as the immediate emergency is under control.

Any parent or guardian that feels the need for further follow up information may contact the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane office at (509)624-3191 or the Camp Cross Director at (509)723-3790.
