The FUTURE is HERE! It is with great excitement that we invite you to join us

to tour the new Cameron Memorial Community Hospital at our public open house on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening Remarks and a ribbon cutting Ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. The future of health care delivery is truly present at Cameron Memorial

Community Hospital and we are very proud to share it with you!

The top priority in designing the new hospital was patient safety and comfort — placing the needs of hospital patients and their families first. Some of the exciting features of the new hospital that you will see include:

• All private inpatient rooms featuring “same-hand” design for increased safety and efficiency

• Three large operating rooms and two procedure rooms equipped with advanced technology

• Twelve private ambulatory patient care

rooms for pre-and post-surgery care• State-of-the art imaging equipment

including 64-slice CT scanner, MRI scanner featuring the “Caring Suite” for a personalized patient sensory experience, PET CT scanner, and a dedicated Women’s Center for mammography, bone density, and ultrasound procedures

• Ground floor, convenient access to Rehabilitation Services including a 3,000 square foot gym and therapeutic pool

• Three labor, delivery, and recovery (LDR) rooms and five postpartum rooms offering a personalized birth experience

with attention to safety, patient and family comfort, and amenities

• A focus on gathering spaces evident in the hospital’s new dining area — The Cameron Café, the outdoor Healing Garden, and the Prayer Room, all welcoming patients, visitors, and the public.

These are just a few of the features of the new hospital that will support Cameron physicians and staff in delivering excellent patient care and exceptional customer service……Well Into the FUTURE! And, our comprehensive construction project

isn’t done yet. In January 2015, we’ll begin Phase II of the project, which includes renovating and expanding the Emergency Department and opening our new ground-based heliport. The entire project will be completed in fall 2015, providing yet another opportunity for celebration!

We look forward to welcoming you to the new Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, and to expertly responding to your health care needs through personal-ized and exceptional service.

ANGOLA — Wellness is a vital foundation for the new Cameron Memorial Community Hospital. One of the themes associated with Cameron’s tagline — Well into the FUTURE — is the hospital as a champion of wellness

Cameron defines wellness as “promoting overall health through mind, body, and spirit.” Cameron’s wellness focus is heavily reflected in the design and services of the new Cameron Hospital.

The new hospital includes a variety of design elements intended to help patients and visitors feel welcome, and to provide a comfortable, calming experi-ence. Gathering spaces with comfortable seating are provided throughout the building where individuals and groups of people can relax, reflect and talk. The focus on gathering spaces is evident in the hospital’s new dining area, The Cameron Café, the outdoor Healing Garden and the chapel.

“When people speak of wellness we want them to immediately think of Cameron Hospital,” says Cameron

president and CEO Greg Burns. “And, we want the hospital to be a place that is responsive to people’s overall health — mind, body, and spirit. Gathering spaces at the new hospital, including The Cameron Café, the Healing Garden and the Chapel, are all inviting places that promote the importance of overall health.”

Cafe expandingThe hospital’s new Food Services

Department includes a significant invest-ment in new cooking equipment that allows staff to prepare meals efficiently on a made-to-order basis. Locally grown ingredients are utilized whenever possible. Expanded food selections will be available. The most exciting thing, said Cameron Food Services Director Brad Noyes, is the menu.

“Homemade and health pair quite nicely,” he says. ”That’s the direction we’ve gone with our menu.”

Noyes says all of the popular soups and most entrees are prepared on site. Fried foods and those with high sodium

content will be reduced. The popular, expansive salad bar will remain.

“Our new cafeteria will be even more inviting with an open dining room featuring lots of natural light. Patrons can choose from booth seating, diner-style seating, or eating outdoors in the Healing Garden,” Noyes said.

Food is available throughout the day, not restricted to prescribed meal times. Noyes says when patients are eating food they want, that means less waste for the kitchen. “It’s all about personal attention and making all guests feel welcome — whether it’s a patient, staff members or the general public.”

Garden for reflectionAnother feature of the new facility

demonstrating the hospital’s commitment to wellness is the Healing Garden, on the south side of the hospital building located just outside The Cameron Café.

Thanks to a $100,000 donation from First Federal Savings Bank of Angola, the Healing Garden will showcase landscaping and a calming water feature.

The Healing Garden will also provide a retreat for soothing, quiet reflection with private nooks for those seeking alone time. The smooth, paved walking surfaces will be friendly to guests of various mobility levels, including those using walkers and wheelchairs for assistance.

“The Healing Garden will be an extension of the main lobby and dining area,” said Zachary Benedict, partner at MKM Architecture + Design, Cameron’s architectural partner on the project. “Positioned along the south face of the building, specific attention was given to incorporating existing site conditions, like trees and topography. It was designed to offer a variety of outdoor experiences ranging from large dining and social spaces to intimate areas of respite and reflection.”

During the new hospital site planning process, a number of mature trees on the hospital property were identified as high priority for preservation. Engineering of the storm water retention pond at the

ANGOLA — Cameron Memorial Community Hospital’s operating rooms in the new hospital reflect the institution’s vision of “Well into the Future.”

The new hospital features three large operating rooms, two outpatient procedure rooms and 12 ambulatory surgery patient care rooms — all of which are private. The hospital also added a second endoscopy suite, expanded its anesthesia team and invested in leading-edge sterilization equipment.

Advanced design, more space and state-of-the-art equipment allow the staff at Cameron to deliver the high level of care for which they’re known, while also allowing for future growth as technology evolves.

Cameron Chief Operating Officer Connie McCahill says the end result is a facility that will serve the community well for decades to come.

“Our rooms will be as state-of-the-art and technologically equipped as any other hospital in the region,” says McCahill. “Larger rooms mean more maneuver-ability for staff. We will be able to accommodate more specialty needs.”

To increase space, equipment booms were added to suspend some technology from the ceiling. Monitors, for example, can now be pushed out of the way when not in use or brought in closer for a more detailed look at an image.

Images can also be routed from one monitor to another seamlessly, reducing

time and staff needed to coordinate surgical procedures. Advanced LED lighting in the operating rooms allows for shadow-free visibility with the added bonus of requiring less maintenance and more energy efficiency than traditional lighting.

“Our team is very excited about the technology we’re adding,” says Peggy Schreiber, OR director. “The new design will allow more safety, convenience and privacy for our patients.”

Cameron took the issue of patient privacy to heart in designing its surgery department. All of the rooms are separate and completely enclosed for enhanced privacy. The pre-, post- and surgery treatment areas are all in one location. This means staff is more efficiently utilized and patients are only a few steps from their procedures and recovery rooms.

Another conscious design choice was locking elevators, which prevent guests from entering an elevator car as a patient is being moved from one floor to another. This is especially crucial for time-sensi-tive emergency surgeries.

“Operating rooms are one of the cornerstones of any hospital; they have sustained much longer than other areas,” says McCahill. “As the technology advances, whether that be additional equipment or robots, Cameron will be in a very good position to upgrade our operating rooms as needed.”

Cameron’s new OR will be larger, have

ANGOLA — For years the Birthing Center at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital has centered on providing a family-friendly birthing experience.

Decades ago, when the facility was built, it was one of the first of its kind in northeast Indiana, a facility that provided private rooms for mothers and their families.

When Cameron chose to build a new facility, it wanted to maintain that focus while providing families a welcoming environment with contemporary amenities for their babies.

“Our doctors and nurses provide mothers with personalized, safe, and supportive care close to home,” says Tonya Alleshouse, RN, Cameron Obstetrics Coordinator. “It’s an honor to be part of that very special moment of childbirth that people never forget.”

The new Cameron Hospital will feature three labor, delivery and recovery rooms for childbirth and five postpartum rooms. The large, all-private rooms, with much natural light were designed with attention to amenities focused on making new mothers comfortable during their stay.

A jet tub is available for hydrotherapy and relaxation. Standardized room layout improves patient safety and staff efficiency.

State-of-the-art fetal wellness monitoring and security systems are incorporated to ensure the safety of newborns.

“We’re installing the HUGS system to ensure infant safety and security in the new facility,” explains Alleshouse. “Each infant will wear a HUGS tag on his or her ankle. This tag allows the baby to be moved freely by staff and parents within the birthing unit, but if an attempt is made to move the infant from the department, staff and security will be alerted immediately.”

Personal attention to the mother during delivery is ensured with more nursing staff involved in patient care. Options for pain management are available during labor and delivery, including epidural pain manage-ment directed by board certified anesthesiol-ogists. In the event of a C-section delivery, the operating rooms are located immediately adjacent to the birthing unit and are reached via a non-public hallway.

The personalized attention to expectant mothers provided at Cameron begins well before the birth of their child and continues well after. The hospital offers a Special Touch Delivery Program, including custom-

ized birth plans, tours of the birthing and nutritional centers, personalized education and assistance (including breast-feeding) and a celebration meal for new mothers and their support person. Training is available for parents-to-be and new parents from a lactation consultant. Other educational offerings include nutrition counseling, monthly breastfeeding classes, prenatal classes, and support groups.

A unique service provided by the birthing center is a return visit to the Cameron birthing unit within the first week after discharge that gives families the chance to ask questions and get advice after the initial adjustment time with the new baby at home.

Alleshouse says all the Birthing Center features are designed to provide families with an unparalleled experience as they celebrate the arrival of a new family member.

“Visiting hours are not restricted,” she explains. “We encourage family support throughout every mother’s and baby’s stay. Cameron’s Birthing Center encourages and supports the baby rooming in, but a nursery is available when mom needs rest.” The mother’s partner will have the opportunity to stay overnight.

ANGOLA — Rehabilitation Services have for years been a well-known and highly regarded offering from Cameron Memorial Community Hospital.

Clients choosing rehabilitation services at the new Cameron Hospital will experience an expanded range of services, new equipment and location.

“The Rehabilitation Services staff is exceptional — they receive many, many compliments regarding their skill and supportive care. Now, their expertise and empathy will be complemented with a wonderful facility that is located on the ground level of the new hospital with easy access to parking,” said Greg Burns, Cameron president and CEO.

Located at the front of the new building, Rehabilitation Services will be able to be accessed via the hospital’s Main Entrance or the entrance to the Cameron Medical Office Building, which is on the west side of the facility.

“Registration for rehab services

will occur right in the department, so most patients will be able to bypass the hospital’s main registration process,” said Joell Stuckey, Rehabilitation Services director.

In addition to a larger gym area — approximately 3,000 square feet — and new cardio and strength training equipment, the department is filled with natural light from numerous south-facing windows.

The new rehabilitation center also features a therapeutic pool with water heated 90-94 degrees that varies in depth from 3 feet deep for walking exercise to 8 feet deep for non-weighted water exercise, with an underwater bench for seated exercise and removable parallel bars for specialty aquatic therapy.

The pool was custom-designed with input from Cameron’s physical therapists to make sure it addressed the needs of

Another feature of the rehabilitation center is a large, natural light-filled, private pediatric therapy room. The room will include a sensory swing system equipped with a variety of attachments for use by therapists with expertise and

specialty training to improve develop-mental skills in children.

“Cameron is committed to new and advanced training for our therapists to address rehabilitation needs identi-fied among our clients,” says Stuckey. Specialty training and certifications are held by the staff.

With a certified clinical instructor on staff, Cameron trains rehabilitation professionals. The department accepts six to eight students per year from Midwest universities, and starting this fall will be a clinical site for Trine University’s new doctoral program in physical therapy.

ANGOLA — Cameron Memorial Community Hospital has added a new resource for its pediatric patients and guests.

Children coming to Cameron Hospital can now enjoy a library of books on their tablets or smartphones during their stay. Cameron has recently partnered with “One More Story” to provide a library of approximately 100 books to patients or to children waiting in the hospital.

One More Story is a library of books from well-known authors. Titles are selected based on literary and artistic merit. Books are also selected to offer a library that reflects and fosters the identities of the readers, their gender, their age and their diversity. Pre-readers can also enjoy their favorite books in the narrated format featuring music, sound effects and the voices of professional actors.

The site was founded and developed by former Sesame Street producer Carl Teitebaum and his sister, the late veteran kindergarten teacher Rona Roth.

The duo started developing One More Story in 1999 and launched it in 2005.

Original music and sound effects for each book are produced by former Sesame Street music director Robby Merkin.

For more information about Cameron’s use of One More Story, call 667-5337.
