III. Rehearsing the SpeechRehearsing the Speech refers to the practice.
1) Practice by ordering the speech in Your Mind: Read over your outline silently two or three times Repeat step 1, but do it aloud. Give your speech without looking at your outline or
note cards. Continue steps 1 through 3 until you can complete
your speech without any errors.
2) Polishing Your Delivery: practice directly to the message.
Use these following steps to help you polish your delivery: Imagine your audience in your mind. Try to connect with your real or imaginary audience. Adapt to your listeners if your audience is real rather
than imaginary. Give special attention to the introduction, conclusion,
and any stories, examples, or jokes. Allow enough practice time so that you become
comfortable with your speech.
Tips for Developing Confidence: Prepare thoroughly. Rehearse aloud. Breathe deeply. Reduce signs of nervousness. Display media aids effectively. Read nonverbal feedback.
V. Adapting to the Situation
Each speaker has to be prepared to adapt or improvise.
They may occur during:1. During the speech2. Question-and-Answer Period3. Team Presentations
1. During the Speech
Look at the following situations. What would you do if one of them happened to you? You stumble and nearly fall down. Your remaining note cards are out of order. The computer program licks during your
Power Point presentation.
2. Question and Answer Periods
If you take part in a Question and Answer period, you need to consider the following guidelines: Think before you speak. Listen to the question carefully. Make sure that all listeners
heard the question. Limit your answer. Avoid a debate.
3. Team Presentation Team Presentations is a speech or report given
jointly by a group of people.
Team members must work to maintain a team image and to support each other.
Nothing ruins a presentation faster than to have other team members engaging in backstage behavior such as rolling their eyes, giggling, whispering to one another, or staring out the window while one member speaks.
If one member makes a mistake, the whole team is responsible for managing the problem.
If your teammate gives incorrect information, you should: Try to work in a correction
when you speak. Send a note to the speaker.
Here are three guidelines for good team delivery: Plan what each person will talk
about and stick to it. Watch your time. Pay attention to each other.
