CALVARY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH
Chandler, Arizona † June 20 & 21, 2020 † Pentecost 3
WELCOME TO WORSHIP
We are so glad that you were able to join us today. We would love to
serve you, to answer your faith questions, and to help you find a
welcoming community at our church. Please take a moment to fill out the
visitor card and drop it in the offering basket. In case we don’t get to say
hello, this will make sure we learn your name and know you were here. If
you would like to learn more about our church, have questions about the
Christian faith, have a prayer request, or would like to speak to the pastor,
please indicate that on your card. We will get back to you as soon as we
can. Thank you again for joining us for worship today. May God bless
your week!
SERVICE NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
God desires mercy, not sacrifice. We practice God-pleasing mercy only
when we see our own lost condition and rejoice that the Son of God has
condescended to suffer for our salvation.
SERVING IN WORSHIP
Pastor: Roger Sprain
Organist: Liz Hawkes
SERVICE OF THE WORD
OPENING HYMN Oh, Worship the King Christian Worship 234
3
P: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
4
C: And also with you.
CONFESSION OF SINS
P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and
serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and
deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our
sins to him and plead for his mercy.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In
countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to
be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray:
Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me
from my sin, and take away my guilt.
P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect
life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed
your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you
strength to live according to his will.
C: Amen.
PRAYER AND PRAISE
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
The use of
the keys is
that special
power and
right which
Christ gave
to his church
on earth: to
forgive the
sins of
penitent
sinners. See
John 20:21-
23.

OH, TASTE AND SEE
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us pray.
O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be
gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your
commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.

FIRST LESSON Hosea 5:15-6:6
I will go. I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and seek my face.
In their distress they will earnestly seek me. Come, let us return to the LORD. For
he has torn us to pieces, but he will heal us. He has struck us, but he will bandage
our wounds. After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us
up, so that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the LORD. Let us
pursue knowledge of the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, the LORD will appear.
He will come to us like a heavy rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.
What am I going to do with you, Ephraim? What am I going to do with you,
Judah? For your faithfulness is like a morning mist, like early dew that
disappears. That is why I cut them to pieces by means of the prophets. I killed
them with the words of my mouth. The judgments against you go forth like the
light. For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God, rather than
burnt offerings.
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 119c
Oh, how I love your law!*
I meditate on it all day long.
I have more insight than all my teachers,*
for I meditate on your statutes.
When God's
people no
longer listen
to him, he
gives them
their way and
leaves them
floundering in
their own
hopelessness
until they
repent. God
wants us to
love him with
a love that
keeps him at
the center of
our lives at all
times.
Psalm 119c:
God's law
includes both his
commands and
his gracious
promises. Those
who rejoice in his
salvation find
God's Word to be
be sweet
refreshment. It
gives life,
fellowship,
insight,
protection and
guidance on our
pilgrimage.
7
I have more understanding than the elders,*
for I obey your precepts.
Refrain
I have kept my feet from every evil path*
so that I might obey your Word.
I have not departed from your laws,*
for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,*
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Refrain
SECOND LESSON Romans 4: 18-25
Hoping beyond what he could expect, he believed that he would become the
father of many nations, just as he was told: “This is how many your descendants
will be.” He did not weaken in faith, even though he considered his own body as
good as dead (because he was about one hundred years old), and even though he
considered Sarah’s womb to be dead. He did not waver in unbelief with respect
to God’s promise, but he grew strong in faith, giving glory to God and being
fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. This is why “it
was credited to him as righteousness.” Now the statement “it was credited to
him” was not written for him alone, but also for us to whom it would be credited,
namely, to us who believe in the one who raised our Lord Jesus from the dead.
He was handed over to death because of our trespasses and was raised to life
because of our justification.
Faith in God's
promises is the
golden thread
that links
believers of all
ages to our
Savior. Though
Abraham was
too old to sire a
son, he believed
God could do
everything he
promised. In the
same way, we
believe that God
has kept his
word and done
what is humanly
impossible: he
raised our Lord
Jesus from the
dead.
Therefore, we
are justified by
faith

VERSE OF THE DAY
GOSPEL Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax
collector’s booth. He said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew got up and followed
him. As Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors
and sinners were actually there too, eating with Jesus and his disciples. When the
Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax
collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “The healthy do
not need a physician, but the sick do. 13
Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire
mercy, and not sacrifice.’ In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but
sinners.”

HYMN OF THE DAY If Your Beloved Son, O God

Jesus' mission
was to save
sinners. In
mercy, the holy
Son of God
associated with
sinners--even
ate with the
notorious ones-
-to call them
into his
kingdom. That
is his mercy.
He wants us to
see that we all
are in need of
that mercy.

SERMON Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus Says, "Follow Me"
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe
in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he
rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge
the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian
Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

P: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your
faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and

the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Or
Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want Us
to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in
pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness,
and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

Greetings from all of us at Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center! This note is
to inform you that our center is moving from our Indian School location to a
remodeled classroom at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on N 7th Ave by the
end of June. We have been at our present location since 1984, and since that
time have seen 13,500 clients come through our doors. They have been met with
smiling faces from our volunteers, been given advice from God’s Word about
baptism, chastity, and many other topics on Christian living always showing
them God’s love in Christ. We have given away many Bibles, pastor referrals,
devotional materials, Bible teaching series books, and The Promise in four
different languages. God has blessed our ministry and we know He will continue
to do so. To God be the glory. Our new address is 3040 N. 7th Phoenix, AZ
85013 and our new mailing address is PO Box 33872, Phoenix, AZ. 85067.
Your congregations as well as many individuals, by their most generous gifts,
have made Alpha possible to exist. We are privileged to share the good news of
our crucified and risen Savior. For this we give thanks.
