Last week’s article stated that a vision without a plan is an illusion. The stewardship council developed a vision with a plan for the parish picnic more than a year ago, yet as we all know even the best plans can turn to naught. That’s why it’s best to have contingency. As advertised, the picnic would take place rain or shine, and though the weather wasn’t what we planned, the picnic was smashingly fun indoors. As described by many who have enjoyed this event in the past, this was not the first time the parish picnic was stymied by the weather. One usher recalled how rain prevented the cooks from keeping the charcoal burning some years ago, so everyone moved everything from Vasona Park to Howley Hall. Certain things are outside of our

control—definitely, the weather is. Still, our vision and plan for making this year’s parish picnic a success ended up putting a smile on the faces of all who joined us for what we hope to become an annual event. I admit I was both disappointed and relieved. We had planned to celebrate the 11:15am Mass on the playground, and while we had a good work force to lend a helping hand for Mass outside, celebrating in the Church was as comfortable as sitting inside by a fire on a rainy day. I’m so pleased with our festivities and so thankful for those who braved the unanticipated wet weather—whose spirits were not damped by the rain—grateful to all that made this a super fun day for the whole family. The food was just delicious—the best way to get ready for Memorial Day Weekend. Thanks for all the BBQ cooks this year, all the donations of wine, beer, and water, for the servers, for everyone that brought a side dish and shared it, for the desserts donated by Darling and Fisher Mortuary, Mr. David Lepori - who photographed the joyful faces of St. Mary Parishioners, for the members of the Stewardship Council, St. Mary’s

School, and St. Mary Parish Staff Members. The day went very well, and we can look forward to next year’s picnic in May. Just a few words about the Cornhole Tournament—It was a lot of fun. It’s just like horseshoes but easier to play. The rain prevented us from playing outside, so we set up in Hoffman Center. We played in teams of two alternating throws of different colored beanbags onto a board at an angle of repose with a hole just larger than the size of the bag. Suffice it to say, I’ll look forward to playing Mark, Kevin, Yvonne and the kids again next year.

Are you attracted to the Catholic way of life and interested in finding out how to join the Catholic Church? RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) welcomes inquirers and provides information and spiritual guidance for those who are preparing to be initiated into the Catholic Church. RCIA is a year-round process and is open to adults who have already been baptized in other faith communities as well as those who have little or no religious background.

For more information, please contact Terri Trotter, Director of Faith Formation, at [email protected] or (408) 354-3726 x123.

As a Catholic community, our mission and living faith call us to provide our children, youth and adults with opportunities for on-going training and enrichment in the Catholic tradition. Based on the principle that “Parents are the primary educators in the Faith”  (General Directory for Catechesis (GDC) 255), elementary, middle school and teen formation revolves around regular gatherings that will support the faithful activities in your homes and the community.  We strive to offer a learning experience that flows over into the family’s everyday life. We recognize that faith formation is a lifetime journey that continues to enrich, nourish and guide us in our Catholic Christian heritage from childhood through adolescence and adulthood.   We offer various adult programs to nourish the faith of our community and build fellowship through adult enrichment and formation.

The St. Mary’s High School Youth Group and Confirmation program will be changing for the 2019-2020 school year. The new name for the high school youth group is now Element 4:12 based off Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” Our main goal in Youth Ministry is to provide a safe space for teens to strengthen their faith life, talk about relevant issues they face, and educate them about the Bible and Church teachings.

We also are very excited to introduce a two year Confirmation Program starting in August of 2019. A candidate is required to spend one year in Element 4:12 Youth Group before beginning the Confirmation program. The earliest age for receiving Confirmation will now be Sophomores in high school. We believe this is a great program for Confirmation because the candidates can devote one year to developing a strong faith foundation before moving onto the education of the Sacrament of Confirmation. For any questions please visit our page on the Parish website (stmaryslg.org/412 )or email our Youth Minister, Katie Sullivan, at [email protected]

We appreciate your support!

PRAY FOR THE SICKBrady Deven Claire Dinno Bob Norris

We pray for all parishioners who need healing of body, mind and spirit, that Jesus be a source of strength and comfort. To place a name on this list (for three weeks), contact Pastoral Care, 354-3726 x121. You also are invited to write names in St. Mary’s Book of Petitions and Prayers in front of Mary’s statue in church.

Music Corner“Qui cantat, bis orat.” (“The one who sings, prays twice.”)

It is not surprising that so much of the music we sing during our liturgies is based on passages from Holy Scripture. Each week, the Responsorial Psalm, in particular, echoes the primary theme of our Sunday worship. The Lectionary has this message from Isaiah today: “Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard; proclaim to the ends of the earth: the Lord has freed his people” (Isaiah 48:20) and continues with verses from Psalm 67: “May God…bless us…May the nations be glad and exult…May the people’s praise you…” And today’s Communion Song reflects God’s everlasting protection: “If you love me, keep my commandments and I will ask the Father and he will send you another Paraclete to abide with you forever.” (John 14:15-16).

In so many ways, each liturgy finds its center in the praise of God and in the acclamation of God’s power, justice, mercy, and love. Indeed, “Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!” (Henry van Dyke, 1852-1933) This beautiful text and hymn frames our prayer today as it should every day. It is our common prayer: shared by all; asked of all; prayed by all; sung by all. After all, our God is the “well-spring of the joy of living, (the) ocean depth of happy rest!” How can we possibly keep from singing?!

And speaking of singing…

The Book of Ecclesiastes contains a well-known passage that presents us with a challenge as well as an opportunity: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.” (Ecc.3:1) It’s never too early to begin considering how YOU can become more involved in our music program.

Singers, instrumentalists: Here is your call.Speak to one of our music leaders (Michelle Dreyband (5 p.m. Sunday), Carol Hennessey (5 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 a.m. Sunday), Paul Page (9 a.m., 11:15 a.m. Sunday) or drop an e-mail to Paul, our parish music director ([email protected]). We are hoping many will come forward to serve the community in song. This is the season for song!
