"Faith in Action: Fulfilling our Mission"OUR STORY Originally planned as a Faculty-only in-service day, the teachers and staff at St. Mary School thought, “Why not invite families and students to come and join us for a day of service?”

This year’s school theme, BE THE PRESENT and our school’s mission statement that we are “aCatholic community that fosters and enriches the faith life of its students…in partnership with parents, guardians, educators, and the whole parish community,” really brings to life our school philosophy that “We believe in the importance of the faith community in living and modeling Gospel values.”

THE RATIONALE FOR THIS DAY Realizing that this Friday is a day without school, we hope that your families will consider it important enough to spend part of your day with your children’s teachers, parish ministers, and the St. Mary parish community to join together as ONE, to BE PRESENT for one another, and in SOLIDARITY for those who do not have the same privileges we enjoy. Rooted in gospel values and grounded in love for your students, we hope that you will consider strongly this invitation to walk in this journey towards Faith in Action: Fulfilling our Mission.

Our hope is that our students, supported by their teachers, families, and parish community, will grow to become “…a person of COMPASSION, who seeks to actively CONTRIBUTE to his or her own intellectual and personal growth and the growth of others and fosters a CONNECTION to become stewards of his or her own community and the greater world.” (from the St. Mary School Graduation Outcomes: Schoolwide Learning Expectations [SLEs])

Thank you for your continued support of the ADA.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONIn medieval times, one country, Scotland, linked its economy to the liturgy. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas.

immigrAtion

California history evokes the stories of early pioneers that settled among indigenous tribes dating to prehistoric times. It’s said that the people and tribes that came to populate this land arrived from the East to North America, but this anthropological postulation remains only a theory. Previous to the time California became part of the United States, governance was conducted under the influence of the Spanish Crown and later Mexico. Russian migrants reached northern California and created some settlements as far south as Ft. Ross. Immigrants from Portugal, Ireland, Italy, and Germany staked their claim and made their homes and built their ranches, dairies and farms. Chinese immigrants arrived as laborers for the railroads and

helped established the infrastructure presently in use. The wild and wooly past of California is well documented. Our heritage is rich in culture and diverse in ideas for innovation and industry.

Throughout this rich cultural heritage, the indigenous people of California tend to be less notable in the focus of the historic record. Immigrants often arrived here to take part in the American Dream and immediately adopted the prevailing cultural ethos. They worked hard for success so as to share in the freedom and rights our nation affords. This kind of ambition was fueled by the gold rush. California was destined to become a state of the union.

However, there is another view of history not so well known or understood because of its enduring infamy in the history of California. When John Steinbeck published the “The Grapes of Wrath” for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, his neighbors in Salinas ostracized him. It was indeed a dubious time when U.S. citizens in desperate need were allured to work in a land of milk and honey only to experience

harsh treatment under poor working conditions, inadequate wages, and eventual destitution.

Steinbeck’s novels recall the ethical implications of labor and land. The civil unrest that migration poses among many citizens clashes with the response of compassion, calm, and concern for the well being of women and children attempting to improve their lives. While migration is not limited to the California border, the above saga recalling earlier migrations to California because of economic hardship or escape from oppression—a recurring theme with almost no resolution in sight.

What we do as a people now for Dreamers born of immigrant parents in the U.S. is yet to be determined, but the action of parish communities proves that the Roman Church is at the forefront of this dubious battle. By our prayer, my we find patience, calm, and compassion to welcome the stranger at our door.

TRAFFIC AND PARKING UPDATE Beginning April 30th, concrete roadway removal and replacement work is expected to begin on Tait Avenue and go through May till Memorial Weekend (pending any unforeseen issues). During this time our parking lot on Tait Avenue will be unavailable on weekdays and accessible ONLY via the fire lane (wraps around the Admin building) off of Lyndon Avenue in the evenings and weekends. As needed, we are arranging for more temporary parking off of Bean on the blacktop area along the gym.

The crews will also continue working on the curb, gutter, sidewalk, and driveway removal work will also continue in the Almond Grove area. Crews will continue work on the removal and replacement of the curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways on Massol, and will plan to begin (yet to be confirmed) on the north side of Bean Avenue beginning at N. Santa Cruz Avenue. When the work on Bean begins, the normal procedure would be to implement the one lane - one way westbound traffic pattern for the blocks under construction.

Please check the website, stmaryslg.org for any updates regarding the construction project and how it affects St. Mary’s parking and access. The town also provide constructions updates at www.losgatosca.gov/AlmondgrovePhase2
