We would like you to design a single lyric from The Presets track ‘Tools Down’. You’ll find all the lyrics later in this brief, so be creative. We’d then like you to design an amazing piece of typography in your own style whilst adhering to the elements laid out in this brief.

We are only asking for static designs as part of this competition, however if you want to animate it you of course can, but this will not give you any more chance of winning (you show off, you).

The following pages should give you a flavour of how to bring the words to life.

Adobe Creative Cloud has all the tools you’ll need to become a Lyrical Master. Feel free to use any of the software to create your artwork, but we would recommend firing up either Illustrator or Photoshop as a start.

Please create your design in the following specs:

Ratio: 16 x 9Canvas: 3840px x 2160px (4K)DPI: 150 (minimum)

Static ImagerySupply as JPG, PNG or GIF

Colour has always been a key part of the band’s aesthetic and over the years they have developed quite a striking palette.

Our colours have been selected by the band to create bright, vibrant designs. We would love your design to explore full bleed colour where possible, so riff-off the colours here.

Of course, you can step outside of the colours here, but we would really like the core colours to be integrated somehow in your design.

We would specifically be looking at your design to see how it leverages the elements within the brief and interprets them. Do you make good use of our key colours? Do you have fun with the words and show mastery of the Adobe Creative Cloud?

We want to see how you have expressed yourself creatively. What tools have you used? How have you brought your vision to life in an expressive way?

This is very important, especially for The Presets who will be looking to only take the best designs forward into the official video. We’ll be looking at the design and scoring it based on its originality.

We will specifically be looking at how well you have used the Adobe Creative Cloud tools in your composition and design. Does it show artistic flair and good use of the tools?

1. Choose a lyric that appeals to you There are heaps of lyrics within Tools Down. The first step for me was to pick a lyric that appealed to me and I felt would be interesting to bring to life. Picking the right lyric is important. If it gives you a smile when you read it or an idea pops into your head straight away, it’s probably the right one for you so go forth! 2. Start on paper I don’t always start with a pen and paper but it’s the quickest way of thinking about form and composition without feeling like you have to work them up too much. Sketch, sketch and sketch again. Iterate on your ideas until a form starts to take shape.

3. Think about the lyrical intent Have some fun with what the words are saying and have some fun with this in the form of your design. Thinking about them in isolation can often be helpful in finding a unique approach as often it can be a little hard to see the trees for the forest when you’re looking at an entire song. For example, for my interpretation of Tools Down, I thought about literal tools with a thought of them laying in the environment as if being placed to the ground. Once my mind was in that space I starting thinking about that idea in the abstract and just started evolving from there. 4. Choose your tools wisely We’re all more competent at different software. For me, I often scan or photograph my sketches and start working

them up in vector format in Adobe Illustrator. I’ll iterate again on screen, constantly perfecting the form factor, refining geometry and exploring colour. I then take the design into Photoshop to add further shading and textures to give my design another dimension, detail and subtlety. 5. Get everything you need Of course, starting from a blank canvas can always be daunting so to kick-start your creativity and to get you on your way to becoming a Lyrical Master, my friends at Adobe have pulled together a little starter pack. Inside you’ll find some handy backgrounds and assets to get you going.
