2C CALLICOON TRACTOR PARADE SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT JUNE, 2014
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEANNE SAGER
When inventor John Froelichand blacksmith Will Mannfirst rolled a gasoline-pow-
ered mower out into a grain field in1892, they were a long way fromCallicoon.
And yet the invention the two menused to make history in SouthDakota more than a century ago hasbecome a symbol of the small townon the Delaware.
Eighteen years ago, the modernversion of Froelich and Mann’sfamous invention rolled down MainStreet, Callicoon, and a traditionbegan.
The Callicoon Tractor Parade. Held the second Sunday in June
every year, starting exactly at thenoon whistle, the tractor parade is apiece of the present and marker ofthe town’s past.
Callicoon Depot, as it was onceknown, owes its roots to the land: to
the timber milled at MartinHermann’s mill, to the animalswhose hides were tanned using thebark of local hemlocks, to the vastspace perfect for German immi-grants to set up farms.
Even as Froelich and Mann weretinkering with a steam-poweredengine and trying to make amachine that could thresh thou-sands of bushels of grain in a day –safely – the railroads were bringingfolks to Callicoon to clear fields andset down roots. And by the time theUnited States Postal Service dropped“Depot” from the hamlet’s name in1906, tractors were slowly beginningto sell to farmers outside of SouthDakota, spreading toward New York, toward Callicoon.
That’s the history the Delaware
Youth Center will celebrate again onJune 8 at the 18th annual CallicoonTractor Parade, a history ofAmerican agriculture and a historyof Callicoon all in one long day ofcelebrating.
The day begins with Callicoon fire-men’s pancake breakfast from 7 a.m.to 11 a.m. at the firehouse on Route97. The Farmers’ Market opens up at11 a.m., running until 2 p.m. inCallicoon Creek Park on AudleyDorrer Drive. And then, of course, the parade, which kicks off at thenoon whistle, winding down MainStreet until the last tractor has madeits way all the way from the YouthCenter’s fields around town.
Miller’s Chicken Barbecue followsat the Youth Center, a fundraiser forthe non-profit.

Announcer extraordinaire – Jesse Ballew – puts local flavor into the Callicoon Tractor Paradelike no one else. A long-time supporter of the Delaware Community Center, Jesse likes topaint a picture with his voice, much to the delight of the thousands of people who attendthe event each and every year. Much thanks goes out to all the volunteers for all the hardwork they do each year, organizing this massive event and working so hard during TractorParade Sunday to make it a success. And don’t forget – the 18th Annual Callicoon TractorParade T-shirt (seen on the cover) will be for sale, as always. More than 300 tractors rumbledown Main Street during the parade, giving Jesse’s vocal chords a real workout.

In a series of public appearances set
throughout the county, the major
players in the Catskills Casino race
stepped to the fore to unveil their lofty
plans for developing their projects, when
and if the Governor’s official Casino Siting
Committee gives them the green light.
This month’s announcements were
well-attended events at both Bethel
Woods Center for the Arts (Adelaar) and
the Sullivan County Government Center
(Foxwoods) and were greeted by positive
feedback from the elected officials in
attendance as well as the public.
“We can see the light at the end of the
tunnel,” Sullivan County Partnership Pres-
ident and CEO Marc Baez said. “It’s the
catalyst we’ve been waiting for for some
time.”Last November’s Casino Ballot Proposi-
tion won approval across the state, but
nowhere did it gain as much support as
Sullivan County.
The Partnership, which joined forces
last year with the chamber and many
local residents to help pass the referen-
dum, has helped to give Sullivan County
a serious edge in where the New York
State Casino Siting Committee may
choose to locate a project.
In fact, Governor Cuomo made a spe-
cial visit to Bethel Woods the day after
Election Day to personally thank Sullivan
County voters and and promise that casi-
nos would bring economic change to the
