T he first time Reginald “Reg-gie” Hillriegel drove sometractors down the hills from
his farm to the Callicoon TractorParade, they “still had their workclothes on,” he said with a laugh.
He had driven them out of the fieldsof his farm, a farm that goes backgenerations in the Hillriegel family.
Hillriegel is this year’s parade
Reggie Hillriegel grew up with tractors, helping dad Art put together and repair Oliver trac-tors, a brand that went out of business in the 1980s.

marshal, a fitting honor for a manwho has rarely missed a parade inthe 19 years since it first took toMain Street and a man for whomtractors are a part of life.
“I was born into it with my dad,”he explains, pulling a photo fromthe front of his refrigerator of him-self at around 10 or 11 sittingastride an Oliver 550, one of hun-dreds that his father, Art Hillriegel, sold from what was then the onlyOliver dealership in SullivanCounty.
“Back in those days, a piece ofequipment, when it came in it wasin pieces, and you put it together,”he recalled. “You learned how itworked.
“A lot of sore thumbs and pinchedfingers later, you got it together! Alot of pride went into it.”
The Hillriegels eventually stoppedselling Olivers, but a grown upReggie and wife Alberta took overthe farm and started selling gardentractors instead.
Those days are over – theHillriegels sold off their dairy cows
roughly 15 years ago and the shopis closed, but the farm and the trac-tors still run, with haying in fullswing in the summer months.
These days Hillriegel keeps thefarm’s tractors running and restoresantiques on the side, plus fixing upspecial machines for his grandchil-dren (he even painted a small gar-den tractor pink for granddaughterMaylee). For tractor parade day,he’ll pull out the stops, cleaning upthe working tractors until the Olivergreen is gleaming.
It’s a special day for farmers, hesays of the annual event in June.
“A lot of them have gone out ofbusiness, but it’s a nice recognition, giving them a chance to be proud
‘Back in those days, a piece ofequipment, when it came in, itwas in pieces, and you put ittogether. You learned how itworked.’
Reggie HillriegelParade Marshal |

HAVE FUNAT THE TRACTOR PARADE!Oliver tractors retain pride of place on the
Houghtaling farm. Note the company’smotto, in picture above. At left, RichieHoughtaling’s 550 model. A quick searchonline showed that a dealer in Florida had a1962 model of this tractor on sale for nearly$8,000 – proof that they are still in demand.
of what they’ve done,” he noted. It’s a way to reminisce too, seeing
equipment go by that they usedback in the day. Even the sound ofthe engines can evoke a memory, like the sounds of the milk cans rat-tling on the trucks as they drovethrough the valley near the Hill-
riegel farm decades ago.The look on his fellow farmers’
faces is one of the joys for Hillriegel.“You see that smile on their face,
and you just know they’re having agood time,” he said.
“It’s a little bit of history you get tobe a part of,” he added. “It may notlast forever, but it’s fun while itlasts.”
