A Special AnnouncementIntroducing John Roberts, New Director of PotteryCallanwolde Fine Arts Center is announcing the passing of the baton with the retirement of Glenn Dair as Director of Pottery at the Callanwolde’s School of Visual Arts Pottery and Ceramic Program. After 36 years and many extraordinary contributions, Glenn’s retirement will usher in a new era with the arrival of John Roberts to assume the role of director of the nationally esteemed program within Callanwolde.Glenn shares his thoughts on his time at Callanwolde and the impact it has had on him personally, “Building on the foundation left by Rick Berman, I’ve had the honor and privilege to build a program and facility designed to educate and encourage exploration in the ceramic arts. From beginners to emerging professionals, my greatest reward has been simply to enable the growth of those who have come into our community, and also to see many continue in the field.”John Roberts joins Callanwolde after spending much of his career in Atlanta at Chastain Arts Center under the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. Beginning as an Art Technician, John managed and built Chastain’s program, taking on all aspects from maintaining and building kilns to later coordinating the renovation of the pottery studio.

His skill and passion for his work led to his promotion to Chastain’s Project Coordinator where he managed all of the art studio departments and was a key part of the center’s gallery installations. Many of John’s students have achieved success in their own right, participating at regional exhibits including: “Perspectives” and The Summer Swan Invitational. John received his B.F.A with major emphasis in Ceramics from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas and his M.F.A. from Georgia State with major emphasis in ceramics.John has been a working artist since 1999; his current work focuses on hand thrown ceramic forms with incised drawing through black engobe. Pieces from this work were recently featured in a solo exhibition at Mudfire Gallery in Decatur, Georgia. John was also chosen to present his work at the Invitational Group Exhibition, “Ceramix”, along with some of Georgia’s top clay artists. Most recently, in 2014, John served as an Adjunct Instructor at Georgia State teaching beginning pottery. He returned there in August 2015 in the role of Visiting Artist Lecturer to help rebuild the pottery program for the department. John has remained in that role until joining Callanwolde. In John’s view, this new opportunity at Callanwolde is a perfect fit for his background and passion, “It is such an honor to be selected as the new Director of Pottery for Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. After working in Atlanta as an instructor and studio manager for the past 18 years, I have grown to love this city’s great ceramics community. It has become family to me and I am so fortunate to continue to be a part of it. Glenn Dair has built and maintained a world-class studio for the students at Callanwolde and I am proud to be following in this footsteps to carry on his legacy. I am very happy to be a part of this new community, and I look forward to how this opportunity will continue to inspire me and help me grow as an artist, teacher and mentor.”

Callanwolde is delighted to be partnering with The GreenHouse Foundation by helping our community through our horticulture program. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded by entertainer CeeLo Green and his sister Shedonna Alexander. Callaway, an ordained minister and one of the first African American female firefighters in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

The GreenHouse Foundation was founded to educate, inspire and influence school-aged children in disadvantaged areas to become responsible stewards of their environment, communities and future. Callanwolde School of Dance Introduces a Refreshed Dance Program!Callanwolde is excited to announce that we are a Chapter for NHSDA (National Honors Society for Dance Arts) and will be offering classes for credit in the NHSDA Program.

This program includes participation and exposure to experiences that the Dance Faculty values. The aim of this program is to instill in each student the joy of dance as an art form. Children are allowed a high degree of personal freedom for their own invention and creativity. This educational approach to dance utilizes problem solving, observation, and sharing of experience.

Make-Up Policy:Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed due to student absences. Parents should discuss make-up policy with their Instructor. Dance students must make up classes missed during a quarter before the end of that quarter. Children should attend a class of the same age group with the same instructor.

Callanwolde’s Newest Offering

Rick Baker School of Music Music Recording ProgramCallanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our newest Program: The

Callanwolde Music Recording Program. We are honored that this program is under the direction of Callanwolde’s Director of Recording Phil Tan, a three-time Grammy Award-winning sound engineer, who has generously donated his time and resources to help create this exciting program.

Atlanta is one of the top ten music recording cities in the nation, yet there has been a lack of music and recording educational programs and studios – until now. Callanwolde’s Music Recording Program is a curriculum of classes designed by Phil Tan to provide low-cost training that will be a great start to those interested in learning the art of recording. The Phil Tan curriculum includes Introduction to Music Technology, a three-part course. Upon completion of all three parts with a passing grade, students will earn the Phil Tan Music Recording Certificate which can be an aid for students to gain acceptance into college music recording programs and in some cases, earn college credit or get professional studio internships.

This is a great opportunity for people of all ages – including teens – who are interested in learning about recording and mixing and possibly aspire to work in the music business. Currently housed our music building, we have workstations for up eight students in each class, affording everyone personal attention from our expert faculty, coordinated by Phil Tan.

Phil TanPhil Tan, soft-spoken and the measure of calm, is one of the most respected and highly-awarded professionals in his field. Phil began his career at the age of 18, when, with little music experience (just some childhood piano lessons), he decided to focus on music post-high school. He was accepted to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA but he could not afford it. Instead, he chose Full Sail University in Florida and upon graduation, landed an internship here in Atlanta, which eventually led him to recording and mixing work with JD (Jermaine Dupri), a friendship and close working relationship that continues to this day. Phil Tan is a 3-time Grammy award recipient whose credits include bestsellers by Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Usher, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and more.

Rick BakerCallanwolde is fortunate to have Rick Baker on our Board of Directors. As a Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch, Mr. Baker has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions, and has served on many boards including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, the National Board of Trustees of the Leukemia Society, The Rainforest Foundation and Steven Tyler’s Janie’s Fund. He was awarded the Champion Award at MCNY for his philanthropic work. Rick Baker is a musician, vintage guitar collector, music enthusiast, and, for Callanwolde, a benefactor. The Rick Baker School of Music and Music Recording is a wonderful legacy that provides music instruction to people of all ages; we are most thankful to Rick and his family for this patronage.

TextilesWeaving classes which meet once a week on Tuesdays are comprised of students at all levels of weaving experience. Within each class, we have students working at all three levels of classes. Every quarter, a new overall topic for all levels will be discussed and projects will be based on that topic except for students in their first Beginner I class.

For Fall quarter, we will be inspired by Anni and Josef Albers. Projects could include small tapestries of Josef’s Homage to the Square, colors for a weaving based on Josef’s color studies, or textiles based on the structures that Anni used. You can go to www.albersfoundation.org for background and ideas.

Beginner classes are an introduction to weaving and the basics of the floor loom. Students in their first class will weave a simple project, e.g. a hand towel or scarf in cotton. Students may continue to sign up for these classes weaving smaller projects in the overall topic of the quarter with close supervision from our teachers. In these classes, yarn will be provided by Callanwolde.

Intermediate students will weave projects based on the quarter’s topic. Students typically come in with an idea of what they want to weave and teachers will help in the execution of their ideas including providing guidance in the selection of size, yarn, structure, and finishing. Students will begin to use yarns of various fibers and fineness. Students will provide their own yarn.

Advanced students will closely study the topic of the quarter and design and execute their own projects with guidance from teachers as needed.

The Callanwolde Gallery

Bernie Taupin’s Ragged Glory: Art AmericanaOn View September 7th - November 10thBernie Taupin is a lifelong creative talent in multiple media, including visual art as well as the written word. Taupin’s artworks have been exhibited at major exhibitions in New York, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The Callanwolde Fine Arts Center exhibition was selected from a large body of Taupin artworks that especially resonate with Callanwolde’s rich musical and historical heritage. Many of the works will be shown publicly for the first time.

While fully engaged with his unique visual artistic style over the past 2+ decades, Taupin is most well-known as the writer of over 700 songs, most of them in collaboration with his musical partner, Elton John. Taupin is primarily a storyteller, a writer whose words have become among the most well-known lyrics in music history.

Salute to America and the ArtsThe Salute to America and the Arts event is a celebration of visual, literary, culinary, and performing arts to raise scholarship funds for US military veterans and students in need. The 3rd annual event September 7th and 8th will present a fine art gallery opening and show by Bernie Taupin, visual artist and award winning lyricist. Bernie Taupin has recently celebrated 50 years of songwriting partnership with singer Elton John, having written such hits as “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Candle in the Wind,” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” and more.
