Dear Sophia Fleming Daughters,
In lieu of comments from this Regent, I offer a prayer from our State Chaplain:
May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between making rent and preserving their health.
May we who have to cancel our trips remember those with no place to go.
May we settle in for quarantine at home remember those who have no home.As fear grips our country let us choose love.
During this time when we can not physically wrap our arms around each other let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbor. May each of us pray to our particular diety whose arms of love embrace us all. AMEN
Faithfully yours, Remember: " The fruit of the Spirit" Galatians 5:22-23

Earth Day 22 Apr 2020
Earth Day 2020 ? Theme, History, and motivation to fight climate change
Earth Day 2020, another year to take an oath for environmental protection and to make a pollution-free clean atmosphere to breathe in. On Earth Day 2020, go outside for morning walk to experience fresh air, plant trees, and spend some time in the lap of nature, no matter what is the weather outside.
Earth Day is a worldwide movement started with an objective to spread awareness about environmental protection. The movement began in 1970 to save nature. There are many environmental issues that we are facing right now such as air pollution, global warming, climate change, improper disposal, etc.

A D A R SCH O O L M I N U T E! Hindman Set t lement School- At the fork of Troublesome Creek, KY
In 1899, a mountain patriarch walked 22 miles barefoot to ask May Stone a DAR member and Katherine Pettit, to "come teach my greats and grands at the forks of Troublesome Creek" in Kentucky. In 1902, the Hindman Settlement school, became the first social settlement school in the US. It 's mission is to provide educational opportunities for the children , keep them mindful of their heritage and provide community service activities. It 's major educational emphasis is its work with students with dyslexic characteristics. It fills an important need nationally. See all that they are accomplishing at www.hindmansettlement.org

Mont h of t he M i l i t ar y Chi ld & Nat ional M i l i t ar y Brat s Day
Taken from National Defender March/April 2020 edition
When Military Brats are old enough to understand what growing
up a ?military brat? really is? ? most will agree: they are resilient,
they are resolute, they are relentless. Yes, I was and will always
be a military brat. I lived that transient life until the age of 13
when my active duty Air Force father was killed in a B-52 crash.
There is no question, that single moment in time made me who I am today. I know
the profound impact it had on me and have lived my life from then on how I believe
my Dad would have lived his and hoped I would live mine.
About 1 in 25 Americans is a ?Military Brat? too and that life impacts every member
of a military family. Each member, regardless of age, knows real sacrifice and
sometimes fear while facing challenges their peers will not. But most ?Brats?
become adaptable and this is one of the greatest benefits. They may have to
sacrifice close relationships, not only with extended family members but immediate
family members too. They will all experience changing schools, sometimes more
than once a year even! That means always seeking out new friends while giving up
others? ? .. and other than separation from a parent, may be the most difficult thing
about growing up military. Sometimes both parents are in the service and worst
case may be deployed at the same time. Unfair to have children at all you say?
Perhaps? ? ? but they may also get to travel and see the world while learning life
lessons that cannot be taught? . but just experienced. And often they develop m any
life-long friends, who are blessings too.
National Military Brats Day April 30th was founded in 2016
by Military Brats, Inc. to pay tribute to the sacrifices Military
Brats everywhere make. Plus, the entire month of April
commemorates the sacrifices and courage of these many
young Americans. The Department of National Defense
has not kept precise records of these children but there are
many and they share a common culture. Military Brats
serve too? ? ?

Interested in expanding your knowledge of DAR? The Members Course and the New Horizons course is produced by NSDAR and provides an opportunity for members to learn more about DAR and how they can become active participants in DAR at all levels ? chapter, state, and national. At the core of the course is a curriculum structured around a series of webinars and questionnaires that participants complete, along with an independent project.

MY FATHER? ? .MY HERO
My name is Lynn Campbell Vernon and I am a devoted DAR member. I am also a devoted daughter? ?
My father, Leroy ?Scotty? Campbell was born in 1916. He didn?t care much for school, but loved the violin and was accepted, when a pre-teen, to play with the Denver Symphony. At an early age his desire was to enter the medical field, but having no money for advanced schooling he found work as a hospital orderly. He fell in love with a cute girl in nursing school there, my Mom, and they married secretly before she graduated in 1941. I showed up in April of ?43.
WWII had broken out, and Dad enlisted as most capable men did during that time. He chose the Army/Air Corp, wanting to fly, and they chose him too!! After flight training in Florida and Texas, Dad shipped off to Europe to do his part. He became a bomber navigator and flew many missions? . surviving 2 plane crashes as well. One of my strongest memories is of him saying how the ?Red Tails? got them home. The much-shirked Tuskegee Airman, ?Red Tails?, always escorted the bombers to their targets and never turned back. Never leaving their bombers, no matter the danger. He loved them.
Dad totally loved the military. So much so, that flying became more important than becoming a male nurse. After the war and a few years on, he became a member of one of the first 3 B-52 test crews. Many problems for this huge new jet, but he loved what he was doing. We moved often, usually every 6 months, and finally landed in CA where the B-52?s were to settle. Sadly, he was killed in 1956 when his plane crashed, killing most aboard. The surviving pilot and co-pilot gave Dad credit for saving their lives by radioing for them to bail out? ? delaying his own exit. He was their hero and mine too.
I am very much my Dad?s girl. An only child, we were together as much as his job would allow. Mom said we were 2 peas in a pod. Always laughing and getting into trouble with her. His tragic death at age 39, and watching what it did to my Mom, has made me the person I am today.
