Aims :

Duringthecoursecandidatesareaskedtodesignandmakeaproductfrommaterialssuchaswood,metal,plasticandtextiles.Inordertodososuccessfullytheyarerequiredtofollowthedesignprocess.Itisessentialthatstudentsproduceaportfoliorecordingthedevelopmentoftheirproductfromstarttofinish.Studentsshouldthereforepossessagoodrangeofgraphiccommunicationskillsandbeabletodevelopanumberofrealisticdesignsolutions.Theymustalsobeabletodemonstratealevelofcraftsmanshipinordertomanufacturetheirchosenidea.StudentswillexperienceCADCAMtechnologysuchaslasercuttersand3Dprinters.

StudentsmakefulluseoftheDesignandTechnologyworkshopandComputerAidedDesignfacilitiestocompletethistaskandindoingsobecomefamiliarwithmodernmanufacturingtechniques.Theyareaskedtoconfrontthesocial,moralandethicalissuesthatcomefrommanufacturingandbecomemoreawareoftheenvironmentalimpactofhighvolumeproduction.

Itisimportanttohaveanenthusiasmforthesubjectandenergytoovercomethepracticalchallengesthatareanintrinsicpartofdesigningandmaking.DesignandTechnologyencouragesstudentstoworkindependentlyandtostudyatopicofinterestthroughtoasatisfyingconclusion.Content :

ThiscoursebeginswithanICTfocus,incorporatinggraphicdesignskillsandthreedimensionalmodelling,aimingtocreateafirmdesignandICTbasefromwhichstudentscanconsolidateastheyearprogresses.Afteraninitialoverviewofsoftwareandhardwarestudentswillundertakeagroupdesigntaskwhichwillrequireaarchitecturaldesignfolderpresentation.Thisformatwillcontinuefortwoterms.Interm3theoryaspectofthiscoursewillbeintroducedandtheremainderoftheyearwillinvolveacombinationoftheoryandpracticalskills.

Content:

InYear10studentswillconsolidatetheirknowledgeofbasicDramaskills,theywilllearntoanalyseandevaluateprofessionalandlocalperformanceworkandtheywillbeintroducedtopractitioners,Brecht,StanislavskiandArtaud,aswellasavarietyofdramaticstylesandtechniques.Studentswillalsoparticipateinaminimumofthreeextendedprojects*:onegrouppiecebasedonanextractfromaplay;onegroupdevisedpiecebasedonagivenstimulus;andonesoloperformanceofanextractfromafulllengthplay.Thesethreeprojectswillbefilmedandcouldbesubmittedaspartofthestudent’scourseworkattheendofYear11.

InYear11studentswillparticipateinafurtherthreeextendedprojects*,givingthemaminimumofsixpiecestochoosefromwhenselectingtheirbestworktosubmittotheexamboard.Again,thesewillconsistoftwogrouppiecesandonesoloperformance.Attheendoftermtwo,studentswillbegintofocusonthepre-releasematerialonwhichtheirwrittenexamwillbebased-thisissetbyCIEinJanuaryandthestudentsareabletoexploreitindepthpriortotheexamination.Thematerialwillincludemorethanonedevisingstimulus,forexamplephotographsorquotes,andaplayscript.

This subject is designed for learners who are learning Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. The aim is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication.
