Thursday 20th October, 2016 From the Principal P.A.C.E (Art Show) The Parkdale PS Art Show was on Sunday. The children’s work was amazing and the display of the art pieces was sensational. The day was a huge success with hundreds of people attending. We received so many positive comments not only from the PPS community but, from people outside the community. The Pop Up Café was run off its feet selling delicious treats and of course the very popular painters milkshakes. The buskers entertained the crowd all day with their singing and playing musical instruments. The Art show absolutely exemplified the PPS motto “Together We Achieve”. This is a big event and could not run without the dedication and commitment of a number of parents and staff. A huge thank you to Mrs Clough and the P.A.C.E Committee: Emma White, Bec Symons, Kath Lewis, Nats Caughey, Simone Smith, Paula Fleming and Gayle West for organising the event. Thank you to the PPA for running the CAFÉ on the day and to the number of staff who have supported the event. Thank you to the Grade 6 Leaders and other students who assisted on the day and to the many parents who helped set up and pack up. Grade 2 …. cont’d

Our CAFE focus this week is comprehension, ‘Making Text-to-Self Connections’. At home during reading time, ask your child if they can relate to any of the characters, or if any events in the story remind them of an experience they’ve had before. They can use these connections to help them gain a deeper understanding of the text.

This week and next week, students are learning more about ‘Time’ in Maths. Encourage your child to practise reading clocks at home (analogue and digi-tal if possible), support them in using the language of time, and in understanding how long different things take.

Grade 3 Welcome to Week 3 of term 4!

The students have enjoyed the third week of our SEDA soccer clinic and loved competing in small game tournaments.

Literacy Week has been a huge success! The students thoroughly embraced dressing up as their favourite cartoon character on Monday and enjoyed a cartooning incursion run by Richard Galbraith, where they learnt to draw four fantastic cartoons. They’ve spent the week learning about comics, cartoons, and caricatures; and have even created their own comic book!

Our topic for Maths at the moment is ‘Time’. The concepts that we are focusing on are: telling time to the minute, reading timetables, using a calendar, and understanding elapsed time. Please embrace opportunities at home to read analogue and digital clocks.

Just a reminder that R.O.A.R. reading will continue to be held in the Grade 3 Hub every Wednesday this term. If you would like to assist in your child’s class, come and join us!

Please remind your child to complete their Mathletics tasks. These are set every Monday morning. Congratulations to the recipients of AR Certificates for this week: Stella W, Ella R, Amelia P, Zarah L R, Bryce A, Billy A, Eden A, Maksim J, Oscar K, Shrish K, Isabella MW, Bianca M, Ronan M, Miguel P, Leif S, Matilda G, Daisy Q, Kim R, Naomi W and Anne L. Tip of the Week - Make reading fun by sharing the reading – regardless of ability. Reading should be interactive, fun and meaningful. This also provides children with the opportunity to hear what reading should sound like. *If you have a tip or recommendation you’d like to share in ‘What’s Happening,’ email your teacher and let us know whether you’d like to be named! We look forward to next week’s ‘Tip of the Week!’

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Prep What an exciting week it has been! The Preps (and their teachers) are loving Literacy Week! It was great to start off our cartooning theme dressed as our favourite cartoon character. Everyone looked fantastic! During the week, the preps have had a cartooning incursion, created original cartoons, learnt to draw existing cartoon characters, as well as writing speech bubbles and creating short comics.

Our CAFÉ focus this week was ‘finding the meaning of unknown words’ and our letter/sound focus was ‘ch’.

Next week we will focus on ‘chunking and blending’ and the ‘sh’ sound.

Thank you to all those who have returned their Zoo form and brought in a pencil case. If you haven’t done this yet, please do so as soon as possible.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your week!

Grade 1 We have had a great week in Grade 1! The children were extremely engaged during our cartooning incursion with Richard Galbraith and did a brilliant job of creating their own pictures! We have also been busy working away at our cartoons and caricatures of Ms Bradney and Mrs Richards to enter into the school competition.

As part of our school CAFÉ reading program we do the ‘Daily 3’ in Grade 1, along with out weekly CAFÉ reading focuses. The Daily 3 framework involves; reading to self, reading to someone and listening to reading. We endeavour to cover as much of the Daily 3 during class time, but it is important that the students continue to practise their reading at home each night, thank you for your ongoing support with this!

This week’s CAFÉ reading focus is ‘Predict What Will Happen and Use Text to Confirm’. Using this strategy the children will consider their current understandings, make connections and think ahead to make a prediction about what could happen in the story. Once they have predicted they read on to confirm whether their predictions were true, partially true, or way off.

Towards the end of this term the children will have the opportunity to create an ‘Under the Sea’ diorama! We would love if you could please donate any shoeboxes to help with this project. Another reminder that notices for our homework task will be going home on Thursday. Grade 2

We’ve been having lots of fun with Literacy Week activities this week! The children really enjoyed dress up day and their Richard Galbraith incursion. The cartoon drawing skills Grade 2 students are very impressive!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Grade 4 We have had a wonderful Literacy Week, enjoying exploring cartoons and the characters they portray. Our incursion with cartoonist/author Richard Galbraith, was highly engaging and the children learned simple techniques for designing their own characters.

A reminder to parents in 4B and H that ROAR will not be on next Tuesday due to the SEDA incursion timetable. ROAR will still take place in 4M.

Homework this week is to collect information in preparation for our in-class project on ‘Communication’. We encourage the students to research from a range of sources, not just the internet. Documentaries, news-articles and books are also recommended where possible. The in-class project requires students to select one form of communication and research it’s origin and relevance to today’s life style.

More information can be found on the Term 4 homework planner.

CAFÉ focus: General comprehension strategies Revision.

Maths: Measurement – Length, Area, Capacity, Mass & Volume Congratulations to the recipients of AR Certificates for this week: Tilly F and Cooper S.

Grade 5/6 Congratulations to all of the children who have had recent success in a variety of extra-curricular activities. Well Done to the Aerobics teams, GATEWAYS teams, Kanga Cricket teams and Rugby teams on all of their achievements. We wish Hannah W all the best at next week’s State Athletics Finals.

All students have received a homework task for the next four weeks centred around an aspect of ‘Space’. We are looking forward to many creative and artistic designs about our topic. Remember you need to tell your class teacher of your topic choice this Friday.

We have thoroughly enjoyed all of the cartoon activities associated with Literacy Week.

Next week, we will be having a Hands On Science incursion on Tuesday and Thursday.

GRADE 5/6 JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITIONS Students experienced a Japanese ancient writing form called calligraphy as a part of their learning unit of “School life in Japan”.

Japanese primary school students learn calligraphy as a subject at school.

We experienced making black ink from scratch by rubbing a solid ink stick in a special tray with water in it. They then tried to write “山の日yama-no-hi” with brushes. This means “Mountain Day” in Japanese; it is the new public holiday in August that was introduced this year in Japan.

They all enjoyed experiencing the calligraphy. Travis W (5A), Jayda S (5S), Chris B (5/6B), Richard Y (5/6C), Lilly H (5/6G) and Jasper S (5/6H) produced amazing calligraphy work and their work has been sent to the State Calligraphy Competition for 2016.

The following students also did a great work and won the Parkdale Calligraphy Competition: Marli S (5A), Holly G (5A), Hugo E (5/6B), Zoe A (5/6B), Amelie McC (5/6B), Grace B (5/6C), Ashar S (5/6C), Tara D (5/6G) and Meg W (5/6G). Well done, 5/6s and stay tuned for the State Calligraphy Competition results! Mami Sensei RICHARD GALBRAITH BOOKS FOR SALE Richard Galbraith will be here on Friday at recess this week, (in the Library) to sell books if any children want to buy them. He has been here the last 3 days doing cartooning workshops with the children, as part of our Literacy Week. All children have received a flier outlining this.
