Holy Family Day SchoolWhat Makes the Day School

Different From the Rest? Our Parish School certainly has grown over the past 15 years! What started with three teachers, a music teacher and twenty students, has become a thriving, well-respected learning center in the heart of our community. Today, the Day School has fifteen employees, 73 students, and we continue to encourage a love of learning. So, how are we different? Our Principal, Mrs. Girard has created a team of teachers who come together each day to support the school, the students and each other. Our teachers stay with us for years because the Day School is a great place to be and this concept conveys to the students as well as the families! We work hard to make every student feel safe and confident in the knowledge that they are cherished. Almost anywhere you travel around this area you will hear compliments about how the teachers and staff of the Day School go the extra mile to ensure individual attention is given to each student. There are public school employees and administrators who highly recommend our school to parents who have just moved in to the area. Several NATO countries repeatedly send their young families our way for excellent care and education while they are in the United States. Families with children who have previously attended the school bring their younger children back to us when they are old enough to enter school. The thematic based, academic learning program is phenomenal but, it is the ability to mesh that with a sense of wonder and excitement about learning as your child develops that makes the Day School a true gem. Registration for next year has only been open to the public for awhile and spaces are filling up! Visit our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org, and then give us a call at 757-481-1180 for a tour.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS Council 10804

WELCOME Congratulations to Brother Thomas Westhus, our newest First Degree Knight. Tom and his wife recently moved to Virginia Beach, and we look forward to their participation in Council activities!

THANK YOU ~ YET AGAIN PGK Charlie Clarkson has reported that last weekend our generous parishioners donated almost $1,000.00 to our KOVAR fund drive. This means that our Council goal for the year of $3,500.00 for KOVAR has been reached. We could never do it without everyone’s help. Thank You All!

“A FAIR TO REMEMBER” It takes about 2,500 hours of effort to make Holy Family’s Annual Fair (the largest Parish event) a success each year. If you volunteer, you and your family will experience good will, camaraderie, and an unmatchable sense of accomplishment working alongside your fellow parishioners. An additional plus is that Tony Mushik and his Fair Committee would love to have your help! We urge our Brother Knights and their families and all parishioners to get involved and help make Holy Family’s 36th Annual Fair the biggest one yet.You can pick and choose where and when you want to help because the variety of tasks to be accomplished are many. You and your family, from middle school age on, can get caught up in the carnival-like atmosphere and create a memorable experience for everyone.

The sign-up sheets are out. Let’s do it!

We invite all of the men in our parish to join our Council and help us to make a difference!

WEEKLY WISDOM

“CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players:”Cornelius was a Roman centurion and a Gentile. He is described in Acts 10:2 as a devout man who gave alms and prayed to God. He receives a vision of an angel telling him to send for Peter. Meanwhile, Peter receives his own vision from God showing him that many of the animals that were thought to be unclean and would defile him if eaten were acceptable in God’s eyes. Peter decides to accept the invitation from Cornelius’ servants and travels to see him. It is through this encounter that Peter fully understands his earlier vision that not only was it acceptable to eat these other animals, but it was also acceptable to preach the word of God to Gentiles because God had made them clean. As Peter was preaching to the house of Cornelius, all who heard Peter received the Holy Spirit and were baptized. It is through this encounter with Cornelius that Peter understands that it is the mission of the church to proclaim the Gospel message to all peoples, Jews and Gentiles.Prayer of the Week: May I have the faith to believe that all people are children of God and are deserving of His love.Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

PRAYER LINE PHONE TREE MINISTRY: Holy Family has a Prayer Line Ministry which consists of a phone tree that is used to pass on critical situations which are in need of prayer. If you or a family member or a loved one are in need of prayer, please call the Parish Office at 481-5702, and ask to be put on the Prayer Line Phone Tree. If you would like, please share a little about your critical situation that needs prayer.

If you have asked to be on the Prayer Line Phone Tree and prayers have been answered, let us know so that we can pass on a “Praise Report.”

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”

HOLY FAMILY FAIR NEWS: Our sign-up tables are out and we’re off to a great start! Please help us where you can. We appreciate your help everywhere, but year after year, we cannot fill the games! They might seem unimportant, but maybe they are the most important. It’s where our children learn to enjoy the Fair, win a prize, and they play a small part of why they love our Church!

What do you think of this year’s flier? Please remove it from the bulletin, and with the proper permission, place it where you work or your favorite place of business. If you do, everyone in Virginia Beach will know about the Church of the Holy Family Fair!

Let’s fill Grandma’s Attic to the rafters. Please keep bringing items in. We have no way of picking things up – so if you have large items, maybe a family member or neighbor has a truck and could deliver them to us? We will be forever grateful!

Please pick up your Raffle tickets. Most of them just sit and sit here. Please help us and try to sell yours! One dollar gives you a chance to win $1,500.00, $1,000.00, or $500.00!

This year’s Fair runs from Thursday, June 1 to Sunday, June 4. Any questions or suggestions? Email [email protected] Thank you!

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH: We ask our parish to get involved at some level in outreach to persons with mental health challenges, and their families. We will be providing the parish a series of educational articles.

Week 1 – First in a series of what our Faith Community can do to minister to those with mental health challenges, and their families.

We all have Mental Health. Along the Mental Health Continuum are three major mental health states in which individuals can be located at various times in their lives. At the “healthy” end of the continuum are individuals experiencing Well-Being, a state of good mental and emotional health. These individuals may experience stress and discomfort resulting from occasional problems of everyday life, but they experience no impairment to daily functioning. All other individuals, for whom problems are more serious or prolonged, and for whom coping becomes progressively more difficult, are described as having “mental health problems.” People experiencing Emotional Problems have mild to moderate distress, and mild to temporary impairment in functioning (insomnia, lack of concentration, or loss of appetite). This may include people with situational depression, general anxiety, or mild attention deficit disorder (ADD). People having emotional problems that rise to the level of Mental Illness experience marked distress, and moderate to disabling or chronic impairment. It may include relatively common disorders such as depression and anxiety as well as major disorders such as schizophrenia. The distinguishing factor in Mental Illness is typically chronic or long-term impairments that range from moderate to disabling in nature. As a faith community, we can offer spiritual comfort through our prayerful presence in people’s lives by acknowledging their pain and supporting them through the healing and recovery process. For more information, visit the National Catholic Partnership on Disability at http://www.ncpd.org/ministries-programs/specific/mentalillness.

For more information – please contact our Disabilities Parish Advocate, Susie Stefonowich, at [email protected].

CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life, especially for our diocese, that God will raise up good shepherds in our midst. If you think God is calling you to serve the Church as a priest or in the consecrated life, call Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail at [email protected].

ATTENTION, ALL HOME GARDENERS:The Holy Family Food Pantry serves approximately 150 families a month by providing food baskets to those less fortunate. In an effort to expand the offerings we provide, Father Gaudy has asked us to incorporate more fruits and vegetables. With that goal in mind, we are asking home gardeners to plant an extra row of crops for the Food Pantry. Any fruits and vegetables collected will be packaged and offered to the families that utilize the Food Pantry services at the end of each month. By providing healthy alternatives, we will deepen our commitment to helping and serving the poor. If you have questions or would like to sign up, please call Brian Maddox at 286-0540 or email [email protected].

DIAPER DRIVE: Help us by donating diapers during April and May for the Second Annual “NO CHILD WET BEHIND COMMUNITY DIAPER DRIVE.” We will have a diaper donation box beside the Welcome Office during that time.

The Hampton Roads Doulas are sponsoring a 5K race and a one mile family fun race with kid zone on May 21. Diaper Bank. All diapers and proceeds after expenses of the race will benefit the Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank. Racers and sponsorships are also needed. You can sign up for everything online at https://www.nochildwetbehindhr.com/.

We need more businesses to be drop-off locations for the diapers. Your business will get free publicity on the Hampton Road Doulas Website and the Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank webpage and social media, letting people know they can drop off diapers at your location. Sign up for that online under “registrations,” and then “Diaper Drive Host.” Your continued support in this much-needed ministry is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Cher Leadbeater, Director Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

Nowadays, we often come across the phrase, environmental justice. What Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus believes it means is: “Climate change is a civil rights issue because people have a right to clean air, and a right to clean water.” The Hip Hop Caucus was founded in September 2004 as a means for mobilizing the communities most affected by political and civil inequity, disenfranchisement, and environmental and social injustice through the means of celebrities and entertainment. Liz Havstad, the executive director of Hip Hop, states that “when we talk about environmental justice, what we are talking about is the fuller story of what it means to be polluting our planet and our communities. The fuller story has to do with the fact that consequences of pollution aren’t the same for everyone. The ways in which they are not the same track the ways in which injustice happens throughout aspects of our society: across race and across class. We must acknowledge what the fuller truth of pollution means so that injustice for communities and, in particular, specific communities can be solved.” Rev. Lennox Yearwood explains, “that means getting people mobilized for climate justice as they were for social justice in the civil rights era. Back then, organizations such as Greenpeace, NRDC, the Union for Concerned Scientists, and the League of Conservation Voters were formed to clarify the focus of environmental injustice. Also, it was then, that the president was pressured to create the Environmental Protection Agency. This understanding of climate justice along with the memory of the 1960’s are a source of confrontation and challenge.

“The notion of the common good also extends to future generations. The global economic crises have made painfully obvious the detrimental effects of disregarding our common destiny, which cannot exclude those who come after us. We can no longer speak of sustainable development apart from intergenerational solidarity. Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others. Since the world has been given to us, we can no longer view reality in a purely utilitarian way, in which efficiency and productivity are entirely geared to our individual benefit. Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us. (159)”
