History of Timpaon's Chapel Cemetery'Established By Bear Timpaon a ful lblood Cherokee, before the Civil War.From facts gathered from old timers.

B«af Timpaon was a fu l l blood Cherokee Indian,

and served as a private in Company D, under Captain

James Madison Bell, in Stan YJatie*8 army during the

Civil war; -" .. • ., .

Ho lived in the White Oak ELlls, abxiut eight- * . %

"-miles northwest of Vinita, Indian Territorya in his

early days\ at which place he resided when- h e died. Hea Baptist preacher, and was a leader among

c-people, and even in politics leading politicians always

hunted up Bear Timpson to handle the full blood vote*

He lived in a thickly settled Cherokee settlement, and

is said to have established the cemetery, which now ' •

bears'his name.

When the Oelaware and Shawnee Indians came here

from Kansas in from 1868 to 187.4, a great many of them

settled in the White Oak Hills, near the Cherokee settle-

ment, but established their own cemeteries, one for each

tribe farther south.

The Timp8On Ohapel Cemetery wae used entirely

for full blood Cherokee* at first, but when the ooun- -

try filled up with white people it was used by all

alike, and three alarms* were set aside for a cemetery,

and the same three acres has a Baptist Churoh located

On it, also called Timpson Chapel.

Most Jit the older graves are unmarked, and al-

though Bear Timpson is buried there, no stone marks

his grave, but several other prominent Indian graves

are marked, with iiiecripti ns in Cherokee* .The stones

are made of native sandstone and were made by a stone

mason by the name of Orubbs at Bluejacket, Oklahoma,

who had a stone quarry a few miles east of Bluejacket,,

but made no pretensions of being a monument marker»

The work however, is finely carved and lettered and

these stones are among the most beautiful in the

cemetery,

' These are the Cherokee inscriptions just &ai

they appeared on the stones.
