Pulmonary stenosis means thatyour pulmonary valve may be toothick and sti to open easily. Thisvalve opens to let blood fow romyour heart to your lungs. Withpulmonary stenosis the muscle oyour hearts right ventricle will get

thicker as it has to work harder topump blood to your lungs.

Some young people that havepulmonary stenosis have it mildlyand you dont need any treatmentat all, even when you are older. But or some o you, your valvecan become more narrowed astime goes by. I your pulmonaryvalve is severely narrowed, youwill need treatment shortly ateryour diagnosis is made. Manyyoung people can be treatedusing a procedure called balloon

valvoplasty but i your valve is notsuitable or this procedure thensurgery is required.

This procedure uses a tube(catheter) that goes into yourheart through your leg vein andthen a balloon infates on thetube and stretches your valveand then the tube and its balloonare removed.

People who have had a goodresult rom balloon valvoplasty

or surgery usually do not needany urther treatment. But,ater any kind o treatmentor pulmonary stenosis, yourpulmonary valve never workscompletely normally, and willleak to some extent (some oyour blood fows back into theheart through your valve). Thisleak is very rarely important, butthere is a very small chance thatsome young people might needsurgery to replace or repair yourvalve in later lie.

Currently the surgical treatmentor pulmonary stenosis is anopen-heart operation. Thesurgeon widens your valveand this reduces the narrowing.Sometimes because the valve isvery small, a human donor valve(called a homograt valve) is usedto replace your valve. Sometimesthe replacement o your

pulmonary valve can be doneby keyhole surgery ratherthan open-heart surgery.
