C O N F E R E N C E S & S E M I N A R S Seminar on Doing Business

in Pakistan

The Enterprise Ireland, an Irish semi autonomous agency responsible for promoting Irish businesses abroad, in coordination with the Embassy of Pakistan arranged a Seminar on "Doing Business in Pakistan" on 9 March. It was the first such business event on Pakistan in Ireland Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan, Economic Advisor' and Director General (Debt), Ministry of Finance was the key note speaker. It was a well attended event and included representatives from the Irish companies which are already engaged in Pakistan in various economic activities. Chairman of Ireland Pakistan Business Council and former Prime Minister of Ireland Mr. Albert Reynolds chaired the event.

Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan presented the overall picture of Pakistan's economy & the remarkable economic turn around we have achieved in the last few years. Dr. Kashif Aziz Jehangiri who is partner of KPMG Pakistan made a presentation on investments in Pakistan giving details of the tax perspectives. Minister Zehra Akbari, in the welcoming remarks gave an overview of general situation in Pakistan & the dynamics of foreign policy.

The Irish companies, which represented the power, education and IT sectors, spoke about their positive experience of doing business in Pakistan. Objective presentation from Irish companies created a good impact.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Albert Reynolds praised the policies of President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, calling the President a "courageous person" who was bold enough to take difficult decisions and measures which were necessary in the interest of the country and that he deserved to be at the helm of affairs in Pakistan at such a time when the country really needed such a leader. About Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz he said with all his background and experience in the World Bank and in economic institutions he deserved "what he was". The Enterprise Ireland will be organizing a trade mission

to Pakistan in near future: which will be another good occasion for the Irish companies to be part of the Mission and gain further business contacts in Pakistan to expand their activities and also to see "this emerging Asian economy". He also conveyed appreciation to the Ambassador of Pakistan who had been an "inspiration and motivating force" behind the Ireland Pakistan Business Council which is another forum for promoting business interest of Pakistan and Ireland.

The Seminar was a huge success as over 40 companies attended it, which was a reflection of their interest in Pakistan.
