SERDC News SERDC Members Help Fund the Recycling Partnership SERDC is proud to announce that 8 out of 10 funding partners are SERDCmembers:Alcoa, American Chemistry Council, American Forest & Paper Association,APR, Ball, Carton Council, Coca-Cola, and Sonoco.The Recycling Partnership officially launched on July 1, 2014 with the first three partner cities. More Information SERDC SUMMIT 2014 Be sure to make plans to attend SERDC's biennial Summit on November 10-13, inPoint Clear, AL! The event will kick off Monday, November 10 with registration andbooth set up followed by a round of golf. November 11 features exciting plenary andbreakout sessions, complimentary meals with plenty of networking opportunities, anda cannon-fire welcome ceremony Tuesday evening. Continuing with a full day ofsessions, SERDC will kick the energy level up a notch with Wednesday's grandreception with live entertainment into the evening. Thursday's closing event will offerSERDC's membership meeting including updates on recycling activities, accomplishments, and future actionsto further recycling in the Southeast. A workshop on conference and meeting planning for SRO's and others willbe held immediately following to close out this information packed event.Register Now !
SERDC to Host Webinar Series
SERDC will be hosting a series of webinars over the next few months to discuss the benefits, challenges, andsuccess stories in advancing recycling. Featuring cart conversion at curbside pick up, converting conveniencecenters to single stream, and hub and spoke implementation, the webinars will cover ways to increase recyclingin communities. The series will run from August to October 2014. Information will be forthcoming onSERDC.org with details on speakers and times.
South Carolina Adopts Amendment to Composting
Regulations regarding composting in South Carolina have been adopted as an amendment to the currentDHEC regulation. The new regulations went into effect on June 27, 2014 and are found in the SC StateRegister. The composting regulation streamlines the permitting process and provides testing protocols for the

finished product. In addition, it allows companies to compost certain solid waste andaddress food waste through composting.Amendment Details
Carton Recycling Reaches 50 Percent Milestone
In June, Carton Council of North America proudly announced that 50 percent ofU.S. households can now recycle cartons through curbside and other localrecycling programs. Growth in carton recycling access has made an astounding177 percent increase over the last five years. Carton Council's Vice President Jason Pelz attributes thismilestone to the industry's collaboration.Full Press Release
Florida Increases Recycling On July 3, Florida's Department of Environmental Protection released Florida'sofficial recycling rate for 2013. The amount of solid waste recycled increasedfrom 9.7 million tons in 2012 to 11.8 million tons in 2013, giving Florida a 49%recycling rate. Florida is hoping to increase their recycling rate closer to 75% by2020. Full Press Release
Recycling Industry Brings $13 billion to South CarolinaEconomy South Carolina's 520 recycling facilities have boosted the economy with a $13billion impact. This is double the $6.5 billion impact reported from theeconomic impact study done in 2006. Recycling participation has increased to 31.5% in 2013, up 10% from2009's recycling rate. South Carolina expects additional growth in 2014.Full Press Release
Pratt Industries Opens New Facility In Rock Hill, SC Pratt Industries held a grand opening on July 10, 2014 for their newest recycling facilitylocated in Rock Hill, SC. The 72,000 square foot building will accept both residentialand commercial recyclables, including paper, plastic, and metals. The new plant willemploy about 25 people, servicing businesses and local governments within a 100 mileradius as well as will bring other economic and environmental benefits to the area. Caraustar Industries to Acquire Newark Group Caraustar Industries, based out of Austell, GA, has reached an agreement to acquireNewark Group. Newark Group is a manufacturer of recycled paperboard, linerboard,industrial tubes, cores, and other products. Caraustar executive officer MichaelPatton says "The acquisition of The Newark Group is a major milestone in our growth journey."Full Press Release
