What an amazing time we had at EVEREST Family VBS 2015 where kids learned how to conquer challenges with God’s Mighty Power! We had over 60 volunteers who came each night to help create this experience for the children and families. Our campus was buzzing with activity as 275 children and adults participated in our Family Vacation Bible School.

Mary Jo Finkle is a Charter Member of King of Glory. In 1969 there was a Summer Leader-ship

Camp in Tucson that was lead by Roger. Mary Jo attended. When she went back home she told her parents Keith and Ginny Finkle about a new church (King of Glory) that was starting in Tempe. They attended the first service and “never looked back”. Her brother, Gerry Finkle was a member of the first Confirmation class. That was the beginning of a long and very full resume of service to the church. Mary Jo began singing in the Adult Choir at its incep-tion and is still singing today. She participated in the Tecate, Mexico mission trip during Thanksgiving in 1971 and 1972. She started the first Folk Group for High School and College age at KOG in 1973. Mary Jo was the Parish Education Associate 1978-1980. This included Christian Education for pre-school through Confirmation and was a sponsor for High School ac-tivities. During this time she chaperoned High School students to the National Lutheran Youth gathering in Kansas City and a group of High School and college age students on a camping/backpacking trip to Ha-waii. Mary Jo joined the KOG staff again in 1985 as first director of the newly formed Confirmation Choir and also taught Music Learning as her son Jeremy went through the program and assisted with several musicals put on by the Shalom Singers and Confirma-tion Choir. Mary Jo taught Confirmation from 1992-1994, again while Jeremy was in the program and during that time was Interim Youth Director. Margie Caves and Mary Jo took a two week trip with two vans packed

with High School students to the Western States Lu-theran Youth Gathering In Missoula, MT. In addition to the Gathering they spent time in Glacier and Yel-lowstone National Parks and went whitewater rafting on the Flathead River! Mary Jo has also traveled several times as a chaper-one with the KOG Folk Choir to the Southeast/East Coast, Midwest and Northwest as well as several mis-sion trips, National Youth Gatherings and retreats with the High School Youth group to places that in-clude California, Atlanta, New Orleans and Chicago. Driving big vans and equipment trucks is a highlight of her resume! She held 3 terms on the King of Glory Council as Member at Large, Secretary and Vice President. She was on the Board of Music Ministry. Most recently Mary Jo has been the Director of the Celebration! Singers from 2011-2015 and has recently resigned from this position to coincide with her retirement from Tempe Elementary School District. During her time with TD3 she taught General Music and Choir for 34 years at Bustoz, Arrendondo and Curry Ele-mentary Schools and Scales Technology Academy. Mary Jo will be busy travelling between Montana to see her parents, and Colorado to enjoy playtime with her grandsons, Brayden and Connor, and of course home to Arizona occasionally to catch up with friends and work on projects at home. You will still have the pleasure to see and hear her as she will continue singing with the Sanctuary Choir and volunteering with other events at KOG and in Tempe. When you see her, tell her thanks for all her service. Many chil-dren both at King of Glory and in Tempe have bene-fitted from her skills and direction!

Thank You Mary Jo...

August Blood Drive Sunday, August 16 7:15 to 11:30 am

Blood drives held during the summer months help to boost low supplies at United Blood Services. This summer blood donations have dropped signifi-

cantly causing an urgent call to all donors to help build up the supply. There is not a substitute for the ‘real deal’ – human blood.

About 7 percent of the population has O negative blood. People of all blood types are able to receive O negative blood and are used most often in traumatic situations when there is not enough time to test the patient’s blood. If you are an O negative blood type please come forward and donate.

Register at the Welcome Center or online www.bloodhero.com (sponsor code king) or contact Karen Hernandez, Director of Health Ministries, [email protected] or 480-838-0477.. Your one dona-tion will enhance the lives of several patients.

Wellness Moment: Kick the Salt Shaker Sodium is a mineral – essential for life and is regulated in your body by your kidneys, it helps to control your body’s fluid balance. Sodium also helps to send nerve impulses and affects mus-cle function. Your body needs only a small amount of sodium to function properly. The salt in our salt shakers is 40% sodi-um, 60% chloride. Sodium is found everywhere in our food supply. Salt flavors our food; it is used as a pre-servative, binder, and stabilizer. We need very little. Most Americans take in 1.5 teaspoons of salt per day (about 3000 mg), way and above the amount our bodies need. The American Heart Association recom-mends 2/3 teaspoon salt per day (about 1500 mg). Those people with various health issues may be ad-vised to alter that amount.

How is your body affected by higher levels of sodium? If there is an overly excessive amount of sodium in the blood stream the kidneys can’t keep up to clean out that extra amount. The excess sodium in the

blood leads to extra fluid being pulled out of cells and an increase in blood volume. The increase in blood volume causes the heart to work harder, more pres-sure in the blood vessels. Often this leads to stiffening blood vessels, chronic high blood pressure, and in-creased risk for heart attack and/or stroke. Additional water (fluid) in the body can lead to bloating and weight gain.

Children of all ages are ingesting too much sodium increasing their risk for heart disease. It is beneficial to the entire family, baby to great grandparents, to Kick the Salt Shaker.

Be able to identify sources of extra sodium:

Use the Nutritional Facts label on food products to determine the amount of sodium per serving. A serv-ing size is included on that label. Packages marked as low sodium contain 25% less sodium; in many cases they still contain a large amount of sodium.

Limit eating out - Most restaurant foods are high in fats and sodium. Ask about a Health Heart menu, many restaurants offer healthy options that are lower in sodium and fat. Avoid fast food restaurants.

Speak Up – when eating out ask that no added salt be added to your food. A lot of food in restaurant kitch-ens have had seasoning added, once your order is in process of being prepared more salt is adding during the cooking process.

Salt is salt – Kosher, Sea contain as much sodium as table salt. Change your eating habits to a lower sodi-um slowly, allowing your taste buds to adjust.

Eat mostly fresh foods – enjoy the flavors of fresh fruits and vegetables that you prepare yourself.

Take care with condiments – besides salt, sodium is found in many items including soy sauce, Worcester-shire sauce, salad dressings, ketchup, seasoned salts, pickles, olives, baking soda and powder, monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Spice it up – make your own blends of spices and herbs, use along with lemon or lime juices.

Used in moderation, salt (sodium) is healthy to main-tain your fluid balance, muscle contractions and relax-ation, makes the process of sweating possible that allows you to cool down and avoid dehydration and heat stroke.

Sunday Study

You have a question about What????

Once upon a time a young boy came home from Sunday School and asked his father a question, “Dad? What does God look like?” His fa-ther said, “Ask your mother.” His mother thought a moment and said, “I wonder what your Sunday School teacher would say…” Questions come to people’s minds all the time at church. As they sit in the sanctuary during services, as they go to special programs and classes people wonder about many things that we may never have found answers to… Suddenly we are 50 years old and then more - and one day we wonder “What do we REALLY know about HEAVEN? But nobody seems to know the an-swer. For others the world’s events leave us wonder-ing about our loving powerful God. When something like war or disease occurs we can’t imagine why God would allow it to happen to people. This year in Sunday Study at 9:15 Sunday mornings we’ll study those and other questions that our mem-bers have wondered about. Do you have a question? About WHAT? You can submit it at the church office. It may become a subject in Sunday Study this fall.

Women’s Bible Study 11:30am Beginning September 15th When one person heard the news she was very sur-prised!! Someone said something about a revelation. Was it a joke? Some of her friends have known each other for 35+ years. Maybe it was just a case of not hearing cor-rectly. But NO!! It seems that the group was really going to do it. This fall, the Women’s Bible Study is going to study the last book of the Bible, REVELATION.

Beginning Tuesday September 15...Women’s Bible Study begins with lunch at 11:30 in the KOG Center. Sign up in the Wel-come Center begin-ning September 1. Lunch is followed at 12:30 with the theme Courage for Today as found in a study each month from a text of that name. Fees include Lunch $5.00; Study only $2.00; Text $2.00 (one time cost) Pay at the door each month. Questions? Or to assist with lunch or parts of the group’s activities contact Ruth Spencer.

Book Discussion What are you reading this sum-mer? This is a favorite question heard in the summer. Finally!! Time to read without interruption! These days people look forward to that new mystery or a sweet little romance novel. Kids look forward to what’s the word on their sports hero or the latest singing sensa-tion.

At King of Glory the “committee” met with suggestions from friends and family, from bookstores and newspa-pers about the latest new works… So what are you reading? KOG has a list ready at the Welcome Center - grab a copy and get ready to take part in Book Discussions. Think about hav-

ing coffee or tea with friends to exchange books and critique them all. There’s lots to read out there. So much to enjoy - so little time...

The staff at KOG Preschool is a group of highly qualified and loving individuals who truly enjoy interacting with children. This is our twenty-fifth year serving KOG Lutheran Church and the surrounding community.

King of Glory Preschool Continues to Save Campbell’s Labels!

We are still collecting Campbell’s labels so that we

might have enough to order various items for the pre-

school over the summer. The list of all the labels that

may be used is located in the Welcome Center and in

the Church Office. Remember, when saving any label, it

is important to save the UPC Code on the label.

This is an example of what the UPC Code looks like.

Thank you again for helping the preschool in this great endeavor!

10 students, ages 11 to 14, spent a full day on June 16 learning about becoming a responsible sitter, how to start a business, tools that will help them as they care for small children including diapering, toileting, behav-ior modifications, CPR for infant and child, first aid and the removal of a foreign airway obstruction. Instructors: Julie Leaf, Karen Hernandez, Helpers: Cas-

sie Newman and KOG Staff. A special thank you to Nicki Wolfe and daughters, Kel-sey and Lauren, who enhanced the students’ learning experiences by allow-ing the students to have some interaction with young children. The students were encouraged to start their babysitting busi-ness as Mother (or Parent) Helpers where a parent is in the home and the sitter is keep-ing the child (or children) occupied. This allows these new sitters an opportunity to work with small children gaining experience and the parent to work on projects they wish with limited interruptions of childcare.

Calling all Amigos...Friends! King of Glory is in need of volun-

teers to help out with the Amigos group. When do they

meet? Amigos meet every Friday at 6:30am - Rain or Shine!

What do the Amigos actually do? The group assists in

grounds keeping, raking, edging, mowing...bring your gloves!

What’s in it for me? Well, you get the pleasure of being in the

great outdoors as well as knowing you are helping maintain

King of Glory’s beautiful landscaping. Oh, and don’t forget

the reward...a wonderful, fresh donut and coffee after the work is done! Want more information? Contact

the church office.
