Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)Established in March 1988, as a Scientific Society of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (formerly the Department of

Electronics), Government of India, the Centre For Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), is primarily an R & D institution

involved in the design, development and deployment of advanced Information Technology (IT) products and solutions. C-DAC's operations

are mission oriented and driven by its mission objectives. In a little over a decade since its inception, C-DAC has developed a range of highperformance parallel computers, known as the PARAM series of supercomputers. C-DAC's expertise also extends to other related areas of

Information Technology and includes pioneering work undertaken in the field of multilingual and multimedia technologies, education and

training.

A major spin-off of C-DAC's research activities is the high quality intellectual resource base that has emerged at C-DAC. With this precious

resource base at it's command, C-DAC has set up the Advanced Computing Training School (ACTS) to meet the training needs of the existing

and the prospective users of advanced computing and multimedia. ACTS now offers a wide range of unique and innovative courses through

its nation wide network of Authorized Training Centres for users who wish to work at the cutting edge of Information Technology.

The National Multimedia Resource Centre (NMRC) is set up at C-DAC by Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications

& Information Technology, Government of India. The Centre is entrusted with a task to create libraries of multimedia components andenabling tools for efficient and cost effective multimedia development. In keeping with its objectives, the centre has a number of achievements

to its credit. These include: A repository of prefabricated multimedia components (NMRC Portal) is developed and hosted on internet for

multimedia users, QuickMM Album Authoring Tool that facilitates entrepreneurs in offering multimedia services, Shaili CD Title a

collection of Indian decorative designs. The Centre is currently working on the Multimedia Rendering of Dnyaneshwari & Bhagvadgita as

part of the Digital Library for Indian Heritage project. The expert team at NMRC has been conducting Diploma in Advanced Computer Artscourse (DACA) for the last 7 years. The syllabus of this course is updated regularly and enriched with additional components every six

months.

Admission Procedure:

EligibilityM.F.A., B.F.A. B.Arch, G.D. Arts, or other equivalent degree or diploma holders in the field of Advertising, Commercial Arts, Painting,Sculpture, Textile, Fashion Designing, Interior Decoration, Students fromother academic backgrounds having artistic inclination andcreative abilities may also apply.

Applicants need not have any knowledge of using computers.

Selection

Students will be admitted to the course on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Test and Interview during which their drawingskills and creative abilities will be tested.

Stage I- Common Entrance Test (CET)

q The Common Entrance Test is conducted at national level in the

various examination centres spread across the country. The test

is designed to identify the visualization abilities, artistic skills &

knowledge relating to communication media of the applicant.

q Following type of questions are included in the Entrance Test

paper:

a. Visualization of Story Board (a series of pictures depicting a

story)

b. Designing icons for communicating different concepts

c. Visualization of objects in different view points & a few

descriptive questions

q

No special preparation is required for appearing for the test. Thequestions will be explained to students at the time of test. Previous

test papers are not made available to students for reference.

q The students may bring Pen, Pencils & Dry Colours (colour pencils/

crayons) only. It is not mandatory to use colours.

Stage II- Interview

q Shortlisted candidates qualified through the entrance test are

allotted to various centers of C-DAC based on their performance

and invited for an Interview.

q During the interview, the candidates academic excellence with

relevance to this course, inclination, presentation skills and selected

artworks are assessed.

Course Duration

The duration of the course is 24 weeks.

Evaluation

A students performance during the course will be assessed on the basis of consistency, participation, completion of the regular assignmentsand projects.

Getting Started: Students will be introduced to using the computer and methods of managingdata and maintaining the hard disk. Exposure to Windows environment will also be given.

MODULE I

1. Image Editing and EffectsDrawing and painting on a digital canvas is a challenging task. Images, illustrations withdramatic color schemes and effects are in great demand for web pages and multimediaapplications. The module introduces students to the techniques used for making digital illustrations,various image formats, image conversion techniques and use of filters.

2. Introduction to AnimationThe basics of animation techniques and terminologies used in computer animation are introducedat the beginning of this session. Very simple and entertaining exercises are planned to helpthe students familiarize themselves with the computer hardware and software. Model exerciseswith the active participation of the instructor will be undertaken by the students.

Animated Information GraphicsGraphical representation of data is a compact and effective method of conveying informationin an attractive manner. Animated Information Graphics are most commonly used in corporatepresentations, educational, technical, advertising and marketing films and multimediaapplications. Here, various case studies of Information Graphics will be discussed and thetechniques used in producing them will be introduced.

Cartoon AnimationIn recent times, with the proliferation of avenues for communication and entertainment, thescope for animation has exploded. The advent of computers as a tool for animation has eased

the process of animation and has freed the artist to focus on his creative talents. This sessionintroduces the student to the use of the computer as a tool for cartoon animation.

3. Digital AudioAudio plays an important role in dramatizing a multimedia presentation. The multimedia expertneeds to have a good ear for music. This session discusses various forms of audio such asbackground music, sound effects and narration. Students will also be exposed to the processeslike audio recording, audio digitization and editing.

4. Introduction to 3D Animation3D animation can breathe life into animated objects and can greatly enhance the attractivenessof a multimedia presentation. 3D animation is now extensively used in movies and TVcommercials. A study of materials, textures, light conditions and view points is required. Thesesessions will focus on developing the skills of basic 3D modeling using computers.

Architectural modeling/Industrial modeling and Animation3D modeling can help architects, interior decorators and industrial designers to visualize abuilding or product on screen before actually constructing a prototype. It is easy to try variousspace divisions, light settings and color schemes using 3D models. Here, the techniques of 3Dmodeling, walk-through animation and industrial modeling are introduced. This session introducesthe students to the basic concepts and methods of 3D event composition and animation.

5. Digital VideoVideo clips are used for showing the glimpses of reality in a multimedia application. Presentationof Products/Events/Corporate Programs use a lot of digital video. Digital video is also used forinteractive editing, archiving and preservation. As part of this session, students will use the VCR,video camera and video capture card for digitizing the video clips.

6. Multimedia Presentations

Digital multimedia is commonly used for making corporate/marketing/product presentations. Itincludes the use of Text, Images, Animation, Video and Audio. It can either be played on thecomputer or can be transferred on to video tape. Students will work on a multimedia projectcovering all previous assignments and techniques.

Interactive MultimediaInteractive multimedia allows nonlinear navigation through information. Interactive multimedia

7. Template based Multimedia ApplicationsThis session is based on pre-authored templates designed to suit specific topics and applicationspresented in Multimedia. It has predefined locations and fields for integrating images, text, audio and video clips.This approach has been adopted to enable semi skilled professionals in delivering multimediaapplications. The templates have been created to support Multimedia entrepreneurs and createopportunities for offering Multimedia Services.

It's growing use has increased the demand for computer artists to design attractive websites. Hyper linked web pages are hosted on a Web server. Interactive navigation through the webpages helps users in quickly reaching the desired information.

Diploma in Advanced Computer Arts (DACA) program

the able guidance of multimedia experts working at NMRC.
