C-Bus BACnet Gateway (5000BACnet) The C-Bus BACnet Gateway is an embedded device that provides a field bridge between Clipsal C-Bus lighting control systems and building management systems that support the BACnet open protocol. About BACnet BACnet is a communication protocol for Building Management Systems (BMS). This protocol is managed by an independent organisation under the banner of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, ASHRAE. The C-Bus BACnet Gateway is a device known as a BACnet Building Controller or B-BC. The BACnet Building Controller contains software and firmware which perform the functions required to allow C-Bus group addresses to be converted into BACnet objects and vice versa. When connected to a BACnet system the C-Bus BACnet Gateway can be scanned and its internal objects will automatically be discovered by the BACnet system. These objects are used to create the interaction between the BMS and the C-Bus lighting control system.
Connecting C-Bus to BACnet The C-Bus BACnet Gateway provides 255 group addresses from a single application address. If more than one application address is necessary or more than 255 group addresses need to be mapped, then additional gateway devices will be required. Each BACnet object contains properties which provide details of the C-Bus group address. One of these properties is the analogue value, which in C-Bus can be represented in different ways. As an analogue value from 0 to 255;
Representing the level of the group.
As a percentage from 0 to 100%; Representing the level of the group.
The C-Bus BACnet Gateway contains a pre-configured mapping table which provides the following connectivity. BACnet analogue value read objects;
Allows BACnet to read analogue values from C-Bus.
BACnet analogue value write objects;
Allows BACnet to write analogue values to C-Bus.

Connecting C-Bus to BACnet The C-Bus BACnet Gateway exposes some of the properties of each C-Bus group address to BACnet as two separate BACnet objects; see below. In BACnet priority levels are used when two systems attempt to control the same point. The C-Bus BACnet Gateway expects commands using priority 16. For the Analogue write object the gateway performs processing after receiving the value from the Building Management System (BMS), but only if this is received as a priority 16 command. When the BMS system writes a value to the Gateway this is passed onto C-Bus through the C-Bus PC interface.
C-Bus will only transmit values over the network if the value is seen to change. After sending the value onto C-Bus and receiving an acknowledgement of transmission, the gateway automatically resets its internal value for the object to a null value of 102. As the BMS must write a value of between 0 and 100, this is always seen as a change and therefore any transmission from the BMS, even a reassertion of a previous value will be transmitted onto C-Bus. The C-Bus BACnet Gateway can be connected to BACnet over Ethernet via BACnet I/P or using a serial connection via BACnet MSTP.

C-Bus BACnet Gateway Configuration The C-Bus BACnet gateway is supplied pre-configured from the factory. Some parameters need to be supplied by the customer to permit this configuration to occur. Message transfer in a BACnet network relies on each device's connection to a network having a unique address within the entire internetwork. This address is comprised of a pair of numbers.
The first number is referred to as the MAC (Medium Access Control) address, which must be unique on the local network segment to which it is connected.
The Medium Access Control setting is a BACnet address parameter and is not related to an Ethernet MAC address.
The second part of every device's address is the device instance number. This number is required to be unique throughout the entire BACnet network.

During the order entry process Clipsal will issue a site specific configuration form for completion by the customer to provide all required configuration data.
