Tournament of Minds (TOM) TOM offers teams of students the opportunity to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative enterprise, excellence and teamwork. The Regional Competition day was held at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School on Sunday 25 August. I was fortunate enough to watch each of our three teams perform their long term challenges. The students in each of the teams should be very proud of their efforts and amazing performances. We certainly have very clever and creative students at BBPS, who spent many hours collaborating on their solutions. Mrs Whitney is the dedicated staff member who provides the inspiration, space and time for the teams to rehearse and is to be congratulated on her commitment to TOM and creative thinking. A special congratulations to The Arts Team who placed first in their section and are off to Sydney on September 15, where they will be provided with three hours and a box of items to complete a solution to a given problem. We wish the Arts Team all the very best for their next competition and thank you to the parents for supporting their child in participating in TOM. The three Tournament of Minds Teams performed the Solutions to their challenges last Sunday. All teams performed to a high standard and were great representatives of Byron Bay Public School. The Language/Literature team consisted of: Milarnie K, Mia Mc, Chloe C, Hayden A, Siena E, Camden W and Banjo K. The STEM team were: Noah K, Toby S, Ace F, Hudson F, Jeremy W, Ben R and Jesse S. The Arts Team WON their section and now proceed to the State final in Sydney at the UNSW on Sunday 15 September. Congratulations Camila H, Edie S-G, Molly M, Cinta H, Esme L, Inishere S-G and Avalon R. Book Week Celebrations Thank you to all the students who brought in books to swap and gold coins to buy books for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. $501.10 was raised.

“Last Tuesday, all of Byron Bay Public School had the chance or opportunity to swap a book that they no longer enjoyed for one that they were interested in. It also included donating a gold coin that went towards buying books for remote communities for Aboriginal children. They need it because of the lack of books that are written in their Aboriginal language, but also in English. I believe that this was a great idea and that other Primary Schools should definitely try it too. I am glad the Aboriginal children that are in remote places are getting quality books that are written in their own language.” By Sam R 6W

“The Book Tasting was a great opportunity to discover new genres of books. It was an excellent day as we listened to four different kinds of books we would not usually read. Another great part of the day was where we were able to dress up as a book character of our choice. I wish that I could do more book tasting, as I love all of the other types of books. Unfortunately for me, I am off to high school next year so I can’t do anymore book tasting.” By Josh H 6W

Carnivale of Arts There is only 65 sleeps until our Carnivale of Arts which is happening in our school grounds on Friday 1 November. Classes are working creatively on a collaborative piece of artwork to put into the silent auction. It is very exciting to see the number of parents who are helping in classrooms to create these works. Our Carnivale of Arts certainly is a way of engaging our whole community.

Sydney Opera House Choir The Senior Choir, led by Mrs Sherab will be performing at the Opera House on Monday September 2. They will be travelling to Sydney to participate in the prestigious Festival of Choral Music. We wish them all the very best for their Opera House performance.

PSSA Sport Our student athletes have been very busy this term. Over the past few weeks our Boys Basketball team have progressed to Round 6 of their knockout competition; the Girls Basketball team were unfortunately defeated by Goonellabah Public School our Boys Soccer team have advanced to Round 7; and 17 students have qualified for the North Coast PSSA Athletics Carnival. Well done to all our sporting teams and athletes and to our teachers who coach and volunteer to take time out of their own lives to provide these opportunities.

Health Matters There have been some diagnosed cases of Chicken Pox within the school. For more information - please refer to this link: https://www.halth.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Factsheets/chickenpox.pdf Have a great week everyone. Natalie Lennon Deputy Principal

NAIDOC Assembly In week four students from Byron Bay Public School attended the Byron Bay High School’s NAIDOC celebrations. The assembly highlighted the importance of this year’s theme Voice, Treaty, Truth. Ngurungaeta Brown (Aunty Delta’s Son) addressed the assembly and we managed to get a picture with him. There were dancers and musical performances to celebrate the day. Students then got to taste kangaroo sausages, and then went back for seconds. We then participated in a traditional fire making workshop. The day was a huge success. Thank you to Byron Bay High School and Michelle Wright for organising this valuable excursion.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Our focus again for this week is our COLA area and in particular, assembly expectations and bus lines expectations. It has been pleasing to see an improvement at both assembly and bus lines

and I thank the students who are trying harder to follow our expectations. I look forward to seeing even more improvement in

the coming weeks.
