THE MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS
This Mausoleum was built at Halicarnassus a small city near the mediterranean(present-day Bodrum, Turkey)
It was built between 353 and 350 B.C.
Today there are some remains of the mausoleum
Including marble fragments, several drawings, and remains of a sculptures.
LOCATION
This Mausoleum was built by Queen Artemisia for her husband
and brother, King Mausolus.
In honor of Mausolus Artemisia built the most splendid tomb in their time.
The Mausoleum was used to bury King Mausolus and later Queen Artemisia.
Besides just being used as a tomb the Mausoleum also had many carvings that told stories, and honored both the King
and Queen.
This tomb is so famous that the kings name Mausolus' name is used for all stately tombs through the word mausoleum.
PURPOSE
The mausoleum was built and designed by many Greek sculptors.There were many Greek, Egyptian, and Lycian
influences and styles.
The tomb was built on a hill that overlooked the whole city, and stood in the center of a courtyard on a stone platform.
There was a staircase that led to the top, many sculptures, and multiple carvings that depicted Greek scenes.
It took around three years to build.
Much of the tomb was made out of marble.
UNIQUENESS
Today many people still use columns like the ones used in the Mausoleum.
This Mausoleum is One of The seven wonders of the Ancient World.
