ALASKA Page A2 Police: Shooting likely was drug robbery By Sam Friedman [email protected] Fairbanks police believe a Tues- day morning apartment shooting likely was a drug-inspired rob- bery, according to the detective assigned to the case. Two people were taken to Fair- banks Memorial Hospital on Tues- day with gunshot wounds follow- ing the shootout at a Wedgewood Resort apartment. “This does not appear to be like a drug deal gone bad. These guys weren’t there to buy drugs and got ripped off,” Detective Peyton Merideth said in an interview Wednesday afternoon. “This was a robbery, burglary.” Two armed people approached the apartment, and someone inside the apartment fired. The shooting started about 2:10 a.m., and during the next few minutes, at least 10 shots were fired, he said. The two men who were shot and hospitalized are in stable con- dition. Police are not releasing the names of anyone involved, or even saying whether the injured men were the apartment’s occu- pants or the attackers because the information could jeopardize the investigation, Merideth said. Police previously stated that one of the injured was a 30-year-old man and another was a 21-year- old man.
