What is a virtual manipulative?

In the article "Virtual Manipulatives for K-12 Classrooms," a virtual manipulative is described as "an interactive, Web-based visual representation of a dynamic object that presents opportunities for constructing mathematical knowledge" (Moyer, 2002). Virtual manipulatives are distinguished from computer models or pictures by their interactive attributes and manipulability.
