Principal’s Message from Ms. Laliberte As we welcome in Spring and the warmer weather, the students and staff at Crestview have
been busy with many exciting events and learning opportunities. The school is humming with
activity most days, and student learning and well-being continues to be a priority in both
classrooms and extracurricular activities.
During the month of April, TDSB schools are all participating in a Census process. At
Crestview, we sent home Parent Census Surveys with all students. We encourage you to fill
in these forms and return them to school by the end of the month, as they will serve to give us
valuable information about what we are doing well and what further improvements we can
make at Crestview and on a system level. Crestview’s Grade 4-6 students are also participat-
ing in the Census, and in so doing will provide us with confidential information on their expe-
riences, both in and outside of school. This is the first time students in this age group have
been asked to complete a Census, and we are excited that the data collected will represent the
voices of students at our school.
The next few months are also going to be very busy, with EQAO, and a number of special ac-
tivities such as Bookfair, Play Day and a Talent Show. While we eagerly anticipate end of
year activities and the coming of summer, we encourage parents and students to continue to
focus on the important learning that happens every day and to keep in regular contact with
teachers and school via planners, meetings and websites.

Unleashing Learning:
A Vision For Learning In
TDSB
On Friday, April 21st, Ms. Brit-
ten, along with two of her stu-
dents, attended a conference at
the ROM called “Unleashing
Learning.” The focus of the con-
ference was to showcase and
highlight the many innovative
teaching practices in TDSB schools. Ms. Britten’s students were fortu-
nate to have the opportunity to share their digital media projects, us-
ing Claymation, with the Director for
the TDSB, Dr. John Malloy as well as
our Superintendent, Mr. Audley Salm-
on. Congratulations to Ms. Britten and
her students on a fantastic job repre-
senting Crestview!
"I thought that this was a tremendous experience. Not only
did we get to do a really cool project at school, we also got to
meet the Director of Education! We answered questions from
other teachers about the project we did, and everyone was so
enthusiastic and kind. It was also really cool to see what other schools are doing with their students." (Sep)
"This experience was really fun, I got to create a story and characters and make them come to life with the magic
of iMovie. No only did I get to create a cool project, I also got to practice my public speaking skills by answering
other teacher's questions about how we made our project. I also got to walk around and see what other technology
is out there. It was a super fun day!" (Maya)

STEM LEARNING AT CRESTVIEW!
Over the past month, some of the Kindergarten students have enjoyed
watching the live video stream dceaglecam.eagles.org. Mr. President and The First Lady (the names of the eagles) have made their nest high in a Tulip Poplar tree amongst the Azalea Collection at the U.S. National Arbo-retum, which is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture. "The First Lady" laid her first egg on February 19th, 2017, and laid her second egg on February 23rd. Thirty-eight days after being laid. The first egg hatched on March 29, 2017 and the second egg hatched the next day on March 30. Since the eggs have hatched, the Kindergartens have docu-mented and observed
how the adult eagles care for their young, by keep-ing them safe and warm in the nest and bringing food (fish, ducks, squir-rels, moles) to feed to the baby eagles. Over the course of the past few weeks, the students have observed the eaglets opening their eyes, stretching their wings, moving
around the nest, being fed by their parents, and even engaging in sibling rivalry. The students will continue to watching these baby eagles grow and hopefully see them learn to fly before the school year is complete.
Parent Council Update: EQAO EVENING
On April 6th, an enthusiastic group of Grade 3 and 6 parents joined our Council Chairs, Ms. Britten, Mrs. Patten and Ms. Fischer to learn about the upcoming EQAO assessment. The in-teractive presentation gave parents a chance to do some practice ques-tions, examine how test results are used and to find out how teachers and parents can work together to prepare students for the assessment. Parents are welcome to join us for our next Parent Council event and meeting on May 25th, when we will learn about how to support stu-dent’s health and well-being at home and at school.

Galati Trip
On February 28th, Crestview students and
staff went on a walking excursion to Galati Mar-
ket Fresh to take part in Pancake Tuesday. Af-
ter an invigorating walk to the store, students
were served 2 warm and freshly made pancakes
with syrup, and were given a carton of choco-
late milk to take back to school. Crestview was
one of 4 area schools who participated in the
celebration, and we were very appreciative to
be joined by many parent volunteers, who
helped serve the students. Trustee Ken Lister
and City Councillor Shelley Carroll also made an
appearance and commented on the wonderful
way the event built community in the area.
Many thanks to Ms. Holtzman, who organized
this trip for the entire school!

Light It Up Blue!!
World Autism Awareness Day was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to
shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health priority. Every year on
World Autism Awareness Day, Autism Speaks celebrates its international “Light
It Up Blue” campaign to raise awareness and fundraise. This year, World Au-
tism Day was celebrated around the world on April 2nd.
Crestview celebrated World Autism
Awareness Day during the last week of
March, culminating in a special cele-
bration assembly on March 31st. Stu-
dents and Staff learned about autism
through art activities, discussions,
books and video presentations. On Fri-
day, we all came together, dressed in
blue and with blue glowing bracelets,
in a grand finale to #lightitupblue in
honour of this important cause.
We’d like to give a special thanks to Ms. Sa-
karya, Mr. Winnick and Ms. Freelan for their
work at Crestview to build
awareness and under-
standing of autism.
Dance-A-Thon On Friday, March 24th, Crestview held a very successful and popular
Dance-A-Thon fundraising event. The students and staff enjoyed a won-
derful opportunity to dance, listen to music and enjoy the special effects
and lights in the gym. Crestview students demonstrated great coopera-
tion in forming conga lines and cheering for each other’s dance moves!
Thanks to the generosity of our
school community, our
Dance-A-Thon event raised $6273
for the school.
WAY TO GO, CRESTVIEW!
Tribal Vision
Performance
Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our community,
students have been treated to some wonderful per-
formances at school this year. Recently, Crestview
students were ‘edu-tained’ with a high energy danc-
ing and singing performance offering an engaging
look at First Nations
culture, complete with
multimedia. In addition
to the live singing and
dancing, Visions of Tur-
tle Island included video and image presentations to
help explain the dances and to illustrate the cultural
experience of First Nations people in Canada. The
message of interconnectedness was embodied in the fi-
nale with a demonstration of the traditional Hoop
Dance. The show was very inter-
active, providing historical and
cultural information in the con-
text of the exciting show.
