I was so excited to ride withnew friends I met on Facebook andfi nally met while they were camping in O’Neill Park. The gal, Debra, (Iknow, the world is full of us) andher husband Jay are also membersof ETI Corral 9 near Lancaster.There is more to how we actuallyconnected but a long story and notŶĞĐĞƐƐĂƌŝůLJƉĂƌĂŵŽƵŶƚƚŽƚŚŝƐĂƌƟĐůĞI will say that the Equestrian life welead with all of its components andŝŶƚĞƌƐĞĐƟŽŶƐ ŝƐǀ ĞƌLJƐŵĂůůŝŶĚĞĞĚ These two are warriors, alwayssharing new riding adventures andcamping all over California. TheyĂƌĞĂůƐŽŝŶǀ Žůǀ ĞĚŝŶĐŽŶƐĞƌǀ ĂƟŽŶand give back by working on thePacifi c Northwest Trail and a Nature Preserve near the Mohave Desert.More about that later.

Mike Wallace and I set out (withour horses of course) at 6:30 am thatSaturday, allowing ourselves enoughƟŵĞƚŽŵĂŬĞƚŚĞϵ ϯϬƐƚĂŐŝŶŐƟŵĞOr so we hoped. We had Google

maps, we had Siri, and we had Waze,ďƵƚƐƟůůǁ ĞƌĞŶŽƚƋƵŝƚĞƐƵƌĞǁ ŚĞƌĞwe were going to actually end up.The drive was long and suffi ce it to ƐĂLJǁ Ğǁ ĞƌĞŐĞƫŶŐĐŽŶĐĞƌŶĞĚĂďŽƵƚŵĂŬŝŶŐŝƚŽŶƟŵĞĂŶĚŽĨĂůůƚŚŝŶŐƐ ƌƵŶŶŝŶŐŽƵƚŽĨŐĂƐ D LJƌŝŐĚŽĞƐƉƌĞƩLJgood when hauling for an SUV but weencountered a great deal of stoppingĂŶĚƐƚĂƌƟŶŐǁ ŚŝĐŚůĞŶƚƚŽƉŽŽƌĞƌŐĂƐmileage than usual. It was aboutƚŚĞƟŵĞǁ ĞůĞŌƚŚĞŵĂŝŶŚŝŐŚǁ ĂLJsomewhere near Lancaster, (I neversaid geography was my forte) headingƚŽŽƵƌĚĞƐƟŶĂƟŽŶŽŶĂůŽŶŐƐƚƌĞƚĐŚof desert road, that I realized I maybe low on gas. Along that last leg,with virtually no signs or services,ƐƚŽŽĚŽƵƚĂůŝƩůĞƉŝƚƐƚŽƉ ƐŽŵĞŬŝŶĚof a general store, and a very vintageůŽŽŬŝŶŐŐĂƐƐƚĂƟŽŶ /ǁ ĂƐŶ ƚĞǀ ĞŶsure if it was open. But it was real at$5.25 a gallon. I was not concernedabout that, but by now we werelate and I just hoped beyond hopethat I would not run out of gas andcause an even longer delay for ournew friends. There were several rigs

dƌĂŶƐŝƟŽŶŽŶĞĂŶĚƌŝĚĞƌƐǁ ĂŝƟŶŐĨŽƌƵƐ t Ğǁ ĞƌĞin phone contact, sketchy as it was,but everything looked the same soǁ ĞĐŽƵůĚŶŽƚƌĞĂůůLJŝĚĞŶƟĨLJǁ ŚĞƌĞwe were. Once the road markers onGoogle maps began to appear weknew we were close. You can imagineour relief when we saw several trucksĂŶĚƚƌĂŝůĞƌƐǁ ĂŝƟŶŐĂƚƚŚĞĨŽƌŬŝŶthe road to lead us to the stagingarea for this ride. And, as always, myconcern for being late and keepingŽƚŚĞƌƐǁ ĂŝƟŶŐǁ ĂƐĨŽƌŶĂƵŐŚƚ E ŽŽŶĞƐĞĞŵĞĚƚŽĐĂƌĞĂŶĚƚŚĞƌĞǁ ĞƌĞƐƟůůothers yet to arrive. At least I fi gured out where we were, somewhere inthe West Mohave Desert. Broad.At one point on the ride, we werelooking directly to the TehachapiMountains and the spinning turbines.

This was an ETI ride althoughnot all were members. Some folkscame from Tehachapi, Bear ValleySprings, and even a couple who areBack Country Horseman and maketheir home in the back countryfor a good part of the year. Otherswere local club members from the

^Ž ĨƌŽŵƚŚĞƉƌŝŵĂƌLJŵĞĞƟŶŐarea we caravanned to the entranceof the preserve and lined up the rigsone in front of the other to whereit reminded me of a circus or othertraveling show with the carnie’smotorhomes parked on the parameterof the venue. But these were horseƚƌĂŝůĞƌƐǁ ŝƚŚƐŽŵĂŶLJďĞĂƵƟĨƵůŚŽƌƐĞƐand I was so excited to be part of theday. This was also where ETI memberswould stay behind while others

rode and prepare a delicious BBQhot dog, chili, and cornbread lunch.Later, during that lunch, and muchto my surprise, the club presidentconducted their combined memberĂŶĚďŽĂƌĚŵĞĞƟŶŐt ŚĂƚĂƚƌĞĂƚ /was impressed with their agenda, itconsisted primarily of the 2020 ridingand camping schedule. There wassome small club business besidesthat along with the newest boardmembers announced.

The trails on the preserve arerather new, only created in the lasttwo years by some from ETI and

ƚŚĞdƌĂŶƐŝƟŽŶ, ĂďŝƚĂƚŽŶƐĞƌǀ ĂŶĐLJThey are regularly maintained andgreat care has taken place so as notto intrude on the plant and wildlife.WŽƌƚĂůZŝĚŐĞWƌĞƐĞƌǀ ĞŝƐĂdƌĂŶƐŝƟŽŶĂůŽŶĞǁ ŚŝĐŚŵĞĂŶƐŵƵůƟƉůĞĞĐŽͲƐLJƐƚĞŵƐŝŶƚĞƌƐĞĐƚ ŽŌĞŶƌĞƐƵůƟŶŐŝŶa fragile balance of nature, the plantlife, and the wildlife. Eventually therewill be park systems, but not beforeall areas of ecological signifi cance are protected, including wildlife corridors.The goal is much like we have herewith all of our open space. Keep safefrom over development, protect ourwildlife and natural plant life, andconnect our trails for equestrian andfoot travel in the present and for thefuture.
